The lay of the land has certainly changed in the past 20 years ... all I can think about, when reading today's smartest football fans discuss the relative merits of a head coach using the public spotlight to coach his team when he deems it necessary, is Bill Parcells at the mic back in the days of his 80's Giants. Compared to some of the stuff ol' Tuna used to put out there, anything Jay Gruden has had to say in public is Stewart Smalley.

Nope. Once you show you can't handle a petulant child, by acting like one yourself, you expose yourself to the whole locker room, as weak minded.
Then when you go on the national airwaves and state that the your QB is so dumb he can't even count to 3, much less 5, you further tell the locker room you will say anything about them, publicly, to save your own ass. Other coaches may have done this sort of thing, indirectly. Ditka is the only one I remember making it so personal. Of course, he's Ditka, HOF Ditka. Not Gruden, unproven baby brother of a Super Bowl winning coach.

Someone has to be the adult. Like it or not. Gruden chose to pick his nose and fling boogers at his QB, on camera, microphone on. A rarity in the NFL, for good reason.
 
Issue #1 for me is - if you believe a QB is uncoachable or a detriment to the team, man up and ship him out. Please note that unless something earth- shattering occurs in the next few months, Gruden and company are bringing back Griffin. So if he's your QB, live with it, do your job and get him playing at a competent level, and stop gutting him and undermining his confidence in public.

And spare me the bullshit argument that Gruden has no authority to facilitate moving Griffin on - I refuse to believe that if Gruden believed that he cannot win with Griffin that McLovin and company are going to ignore that feedback and force Griffin on him. I believe if that were the scenario Gruden would have quit already.

In short, Gruden needs to get busy living, or get busy dying.
 
Well, they certainly weren't going to move him last year after another injury. Had to give him a chance to show his talents after recovery.

This year we'll see. He is cheap for this season, so there's that. Barring an incredible season, I don't see him here next year.

And I'm not sure Gruden has the final say in if he stays or goes. I imagine that's Scot's call, or a group decision. But it depends on who you speak to:

For the record, I don't even care if Dan wants to keep RG3. He paid and traded for him. That's his right imho. I'm sure he wants to give him another season.

I own a stock right now named Alibaba. I'm in at $93 per share, and it's currently trading at $84. There's no way in hell I would sell that stock down here. I'm the owner.

So I empathize with how Dan is feeling.

While I agree twitter is not journalism, having him come out and say we're going into the season with him as the starter in feb, holds very little weight with me. A LOT can change between February and August, and the even more can change throughout the preseason. I honestly think he's the 'current' starter, but that he's on the market to get shopped. They're not going to publicly say it's an open competition because that drops his value. I don't think it's an outright lie either. At this point in time, Griffin is the number 1 QB. Nobody guaranteed that he was going to be the starter week 1, just said he'll start the season as the number 1 guy. Very little difference between the 2 statements, but there's a grey area there.

I think the McCoy signing opened the door for either Griff or Kirk to get moved before Aug. 1. Whether that be a draft day trade, or a trade later in the year, just my opinion.
 
Your word has a statute of limitations on when you can be held to it? Sorry, but that seems like bs to me. If you aren't sure what will happen come fall then don't say it. He had zero reason to say Griffin was the starter and it was actually a shock to everyone that he did it to begin with.

He needs to be integral with his word and say what he means or don't say anything. Being quiet gives up no secrets but telling someone they have the job tells a lot.

Al's insistence that Gruden is in over his head, may be true. But the way Robert was handled was not a problem for anyone but Robert and those who have a problem with that style of management. Fear can be a great motivator, I see nothing wrong with people fearing they may lose their position if they don't play hard/well enough. And I see nothing wrong with a coach dancing a tango in the media if he is getting hit from all sides to start a player who obviously is not worthy of starting.

The only thing I will disagree with, I do not think Robert played that well against the Giants and was only serviceable against the Eagles. It's a shame that a serviceable performance is perceived as a good performance based off the horrible performances that got him benched. I rue the day RG3 is gone for good!

others can come to their own conclusions on RGIII. not sure on that one myself anymore. performance...in the end...is what counts. so I'm not getting into the RGIII firefights.

which is where Gruden comes in. that team last season was awful. I'm not buying into the horse hockey that he inherited failure or that he's a babe in the woods who has to suckle on the nipple of experience to achieve competency at his chosen profession. good coaches make some marginal difference that is detectable. I didn't see any of that - not even in stupid **** like not committing dumb headwork errors that earn unnec penalties. that is all traceable to coaching and accountability. the standard around here seems to be - well he was direct and I really like that. say what? what's that got to do with what transpires on the field?

we're gonna be better this season...whether it will because McL knows how to build a quality team that can overcome mediocre coaching or because Gruden really is a top flight guy who just needed some material to work with is an interesting set of rancorous discussions waiting at the other end of next season!

Saying that Griffin ended the season as the starter so, as of right now, were going into it with him, is saying nothing. He didn't come out and say that Griffin is the guy, and that he's the one who's the future of the franchise. It was a vanilla response. I don't care if he tells us the truth, as long as he's honest with the locker room. We need to get back to the type of franchise that makes decisions, regardless of the masses opinions. If he's lying to the front office, and the layers, that's a whole other conversation, but playing the PR game is a lot of what's wrong with the franchise as it sits right now.

One thing he did say, though, is that they looked at the tape, and decided Griffin looked the best and was the starter. Could be smoke, but as I recall, that was what they stated. It wasn't that he ended as starter for the season. They actually said it was the best option after looking at the tape.

So Griffin's the guy, right?

I really don't care what the flavor was, he shouldn't have volunteered anything when his integrity is already under scrutiny. You think bellicheat or Parcells ever volunteered things just to change it later? Nope, they said what they meant or nothing at all.

If his rep shouldn't be questioned he shouldn't say things like that which could cause it to happen. It's integrity that's at lie here and not talent.
 
But read the quote. "Griffin ended the season as the starter, we anticipate that going forward." Nothing there says that he's the unequivocal starter and nothing can change that. When asked a follow, he makes a comment that 'obviously he's the no. 1' going into the season, referencing the question asked. Why is it a shot as his integrity? I just personally don't read anything there that is iron clad in any way.
 
Why say that at all? He had no need to volunteer that information. Yet with all he's said he now looks like he's saying things he shouldn't and can't/won't stick to.

I don't say things that I don't mean or have 100% intentions of sticking to. If asked further about something I've said and I reiterate it you can believe it's the truth.
 
When a player is a starter going into a new season, that doesn't mean he can't lose that in Training camp or preseason. If he performs through training camp and preseason, this is a non issue. Trying to find some integrity issue here with Grudens words is just trying to find more negative. The team sucks and has forever. No possible answer is going to be right when we've sucked for so long. If he says it's open competition, it's a blast fest that the high priced QB is not the default starter, and RG's frail ego takes another hit. If I was Gruden, I'd pull a Belichek and give no info about anything. It's the only way to go in todays instant media frenzied world. My pressers would be a great big bag of, "we don't comment on internal organizational matters, We'll post the starters as the league requires" "Practice was great we expect good things on Sunday" "We'll go over each players performance with the players individually. They could comment on that themselves, but I don't allow players to discuss internal organizational matters" :) They'd hate me.

Oh give me a freaking break. He'd really have to never say a damn thing to make sure every base is covered. He's damned if he does and damned if he doesn't. How about this? "After going through the offseason, seeing what's transpired and the changes we've made, I've made the decision to go a different direction." There is nothing wrong with that and it's certainly not a lack of integrity. Things and people change. This is nitpicking to the extreme. I wish life was so smooth for my I never had to change my mind or direction.
