PFT: The end of the road could be near for McNabb

Henson lit it up for a half against Arizona in the preseason finale last season before getting hurt. Naturally. He and Chris Wilson put on quite a show. Yeah it was against scrubs but they did exactly what you want two potential future starters to do in that situation--dominate.

Not holding out too high expectations on Henson, but the half he turned in when he DID get some playing time definitely got my attention. Really looking forward to seeing if he picks up where he left off this coming preseason.

He was a monster at TCU. Watched him play quite a few times (got a buddy who's an alumni) and he was impressive. I think he'll at the very least be one of those solid contributors on D that goes relatively unnoticed, but is always making the right play.

to be honest I quit putting any investment of excitement in preseason performances after Colt looked like an allpro and broke our hearts lol, its good to know he looked good at against other scrubs when healthy, it does mean our scrubs are better than other teams scrubs and im serious thats good because you build from the bottom of your roster upwards to build longterm solidness. Wilson to me has always been a "just on the verge" guy who never quite gets to the level he needs to be to start in games that matter, and it bugs me even more that we missed on Cam Wake and now Philipp Hunt probably because of Wilsons lack of getting it done in real games.

dont get me wrong, Henson was solid in college, but lots of guys are, I want him and our other kids to figure it out and start playing better, I just dont hold out much hope as we really havent seemed to put much thought into anything after round 5.

could be, especially if we dont go after more talent, I think he might be a long time special teams guy who stays around because of that, like a Larry Izzo.

Sometimes - it's as much about timing and luck as pure talent. Brennan never got a chance to show what he could do against real competition. He never earned enough confidence from the coaching staff to get his shot, which always made me a little sad. I would have loved to see what he could do with good coaching and half a season or so to adjust to the NFL. It's easy to say he never could've made it in the NFL. But we'll likely never know.

I think it's that way for a lot of guys. For every hundred that fade away into NFL oblivion, I have no doubt, there are 4 or 5 who could've made some noise and a name for themselves under the right circumstances.

I keep hearing a lot of people talking about McNabb like he's elite, so here's a little comparison of him to another QB through their first 5 seasons as a starter.

Player 1:
70 Starts
13,051 Yards Passing
55.8 Completion Percentage
87 Touchdowns
49 Interceptions
77.2 QB Rating

Player 2:
71 Starts
15,477 Yards Passing
59.4 Completion Percentage
86 Touchdowns
52 Interceptions
85.6 QB Rating

Player 1 is Donovan McNabb, Player 2 is Mark Brunell. This is why statistics mean nothing. Oh yeah, and Brunell has a SB ring

Agreed 100%. I wish he had gotten the nod.

I never quite get the Brunell bashing. First of all - he was good enough to get us to the playoffs for the first time in a long time. Secondly, he was an old grizzled vet by the time he came to DC - so judging based on his physical skills alone during that time is just silly. In my opinion he was a hell of a QB in his day, and deserves a little more respect than Skins fans give him.

I loved Brunell and what he did in DC. But using his DB victory as proof of his greatness as a QB is ludicrous.

What's a DB victory? :bucktooth:

I'm not sure, El, but I think it may have something to do with the fact that the "S" and the "D" on the keyboard are right next to each other.

To a "hunt-and-peck" typist like myself, this is a critical element in the ability I sometimes have of making my communications unintelligible. :)

According to PFT this morning, the Broncos want nothing less than a 2nd rounder for Kyle Orton. This is great news for the Redskins and their situation at QB. No, I am not suggesting that we give up a 2nd for Orton. Coupled with the demands that Philly wants for Kevin Kolb - nothing less than a 1st rounder - it could be a good thing for the Redskins and their propects for trading DMc5.

I just don't see teams giving up a 2nd for Orton. Only one team may give up a 1st for Kolb - the Cardinals. Assuming that Hasselbeck completes his career in Seattle, that leaves only DMc5 as the best QB option for needy teams. I'm thinking we can get a 3rd rounder for him and that is not an exaggeration or a reach at all.

Stay with me on this one...

In the 2011 draft, we were able to take our first round pick and turn it into a third rounder, a fourth rounder, and three additional picks. In a way, we were able to take that lost 2010 2nd rounder (remember, we gave up a 2nd in 2010 and in a manner of speaking, we got it back in the 2011 draft) and turn it into a host of picks.

Assuming that we can get a 3rd rounder in a trade, it would offset the loss of our 4th rounder from last month. Even if we get a 4th for McNabb, we all but break even in the deal. If we get a 3rd, and I think we will, then we come out slightly ahead on a one year rental. Too, it wouldn't be surprising to see the team turn that extra 3rd into two or three additional picks.

Stay tuned my friends. We may turn this one year rental on DMc5 into a great situation.

A "DB" victory is the result of the DB spell check on my DB phone changing **** and me not noticing!

 Oh, and I agree with the Brunnel comment. He had a very solid career. Won a lot of games in JAX and gave us some excitement for a couple of years. Not a Hall of Famer, ut a solid QB for his career nonetheless.

As for McNabb, BB does have a point. If Hankerson is as good as many say he is going to be, he was picked up from that second BB was mentioning. Add to that a 3rd we could get for McNabb and it may be a push. Not to mention the couple of other guys picked up through the trades down.

I dont follow that logic, we got the second for something else entirely, the only we come out even is if we get a 2 and a 4 for mcrapp, I dont see that happening, you could argue that since we got a season out of him we would be even with a 3 and 4 I guess. with a one round difference for the season we rented him for.

I don't think he's saying we are getting those picks for McNabb, just that we are getting some back with all the draft day maneuvering which could make the trade/debacle a wash.

I hate that we lost picks for McNabb, but given his credentials at the time, that trade appeared to be a bargain. He was never a perfect QB in Philly - and we're seeing now that a lot of his success could probably be attributed to Andy Reid's influence - but he was a damn effective QB for the Eagles.

Its only in retrospect, with his inability to catch on in DC, that the price appears to have been incredibly expensive. I really can't fault Shanahan and Allen for pulling the trigger at that price. I doubt many of us really thought McNabb would be as ineffective as he was last year.

And if McNabb somehow doesn't get traded, I think the most interesting possible QB development this year would be seeing him somehow rise from the ashes, seize back the starting job, and have a Pro Bowl year. I think its very unlikely that'll happen, mostly because I think it's his nature to pout and sulk, but I don't think it's an impossible scenario.

Boone, I personally blame the Mcnabb debacle completely on shanny, I think he saw a guy who had the same basic physical stats as Elway and he overestimated his own ability to max out a QB. he didnt take into account his lack of accuracy, his need to throw a lot to get in a rythym or his lack of intelligence in learning a new system. Mcnabb has always struck me a frontrunner, as long as he has a lead hes ok, but when the heat comes on, he tends to play far worse. I also think the worst thing about him is that he SAYS all the right things and then just does his own thing, I think Kyle figured that out pretty quickly, watching film and then talking to him afterward. I know as a coach, I can take a guy being dense or not knowing how to do something, I cant take a guy being dishonest about it.

honestly I dont know how we could have not known he would be a fail here, we saw him multiple times, the times he beat us it was due to his feet, and him making big plays, something we had to know he was losing with age. I remember lots of people saying that giving up a 2 was too much let alone a 4. I think we got rooked on a deal plain and simple.

I wish I had your optimism, I think you are right though he will pout and sulk until we cut him or trade him.
