PFT: Momentum builds for a Redskins name change, and one man can make it happen

when I was a kid, some aim guys came to our res to get us all to support them protesting the redskins, the blackhawks and the braves and chiefs, during the meeting, Merv was wearing a redskins ballcap, I was wearing a redskins pullover, multiple people were wearing blackhawks caps. about the only that offended us was the braves cartoony indian, the rest are pretty classy.

You know who gets offended by the redskins? bleeding heart white liberals who feel guilty of the genocide of the american indian. the manufactured outrage is supposed to make up for the active active genocide of an entire people? lmao good job white mans guilt, I am sure you feel you are helping the indian, but instead of sports teams why not attack real problems?

I worry about the scumbags who murdered women and children at wounded knee still having medals of "honour", I worry about reserves that have worse than third world conditions in a country like america.

anyway the next time they go on a hippy liberal asshat rant about our teams name and symbols, maybe they should, I don't know ASK AN ACTUAL INDIAN?

Interesting article just out. Washington Redskins Proudly Defend Their Name In The Dumbest Way Possible......NSFW:

Nah, I don't find it interesting, I find it infuriating. Ignorance should not be allowed to spread the way it is allowed to spread in online articles like that one. It is so hypocritical, because these same people are the ones who are constantly spewing rage about the ignorance of racism, yet are ignorantly trying to create racism where none exisits. :wall:

I quoted this simply to re-emphasize its great take

I would just like to say, I'm not strongly opposed to a name-change, however I also love the REDSKINS, and think the name is awesome. In the other thread I was simply pointing out that I understand where others might be coming from, and can empathize.

A MIDMORNING RANT.
I am a redskins fan, I have been since the early 80's when I met a redskins player who was in northern alberta to go hunting. until that point I had barely been aware of football. then I had the chance to play and was immediately addicted to the greatest sport ever invented.Football has affected my life positively.

I grew up in an era when the redskins were one of the better te...ams every single year through the 80's and one of the most dominant teams of all time in 1992. The Emblem is classy and makes me proud to see it on helmets and flags, its not cartoony or offensive like the Braves. I think it reminds people that we are here still after all the attempts to remove us from history it gives us recognition. if anything its something for us to be proud of. The name Redskin is obviously a relic of more racist times but we have taken the word and made it ours, WE decide what it means. Everytime the redskins beat the cowboys I smile, because its pretty funny and ironic. every time

I notice that the people who campaign every year to change the name and symbol are never actually Indians, its always some raging liberal bleeding heart who probably thinks their efforts give them a pass on being a beneficiary of the genocide committed against North american indians, or some Indian who thinks anything white folks do is bad especially sports lol. Its pretty damn ridiculous that there are almost no people protesting the medals of dishonour given to people who murdered women and children at wounded knee, that there are reserves that have people living in WORSE than third world conditions, that there are indian kids who are literally starving, and we waste time, money and effort bitching about sports teams.

this was my facebook status, lmao the "likes" mostly came from native people on my friends list. Its a bit the same but I figured it was worth posting

this has nothing to do with casinos or tax free land, its ignorant to even bring that up. however the reaosn this name chnage gabage always fails is simple, most indians dont dislike having the redskins, we have a classy emblem not like the braves

Agree strongly with this - not even sure why this got brought up in the first place. It has no place in this discussion.

Ryman, should we start writing emails to the blogs like ESPN and such to see what they say to our point of view? See if we even get a response, being an affected party, or just shoved by the wayside?

they will simply ignore us because we dont fit their narrative Shi no. now if we were cowboys fans and hated the skins we would be all over the interweb on viral posts talking about how we are so hard done by and how the redskins have done us wrong.

Mike, yup, nothing and I do mean nothing, pisses me off more than white people who presume to speak for me, I was recently told by an evil old white woman that as a Native I cant support Israel, then she proceeded to lecture me about Israel getting almost NONE of the history correct and absolutely embarrassing herself until one of my friends told her " Ryan has actually had articles and papers about the middle east published, you should probably not be lecturing him on history." I then corrected some of her more obvious fallacies and explained that although I am Native, I have read a few books and don't need anyone let alone an old white woman with entitlment issues to form my opinions for me lol then because she wouldnt shut up, I wrote this article.

I think it pissed her off when they printed it

Native Americans speak on sports imagery.

EDIT: seems not all Native Americans are honored by the name - I suppose this just leads back to Om's questions, which in turn lead to the question if anyone is offended by this, why shouldn't we change it? Lots of questions remain...

Oh absolutely there are some people who are offended by it, there is one guy in paddle who is always going on about it, hes an asshat who is also a "blame whitey" guy who nobody on the res listens to because he whines about things that don't matter and ignores the things that do.

You will always have the guys who whine, and the fact is they are usually louder than those who dont care , because people who dont care, DONT CARE ENOUGH TO SPEAK UP. lol I need coffee, I blame you white folks for introducing that devil juice to us.

HEY! Calling coffee 'devil juice' OFFENDS ME, SIR! lol. ;)

Should we really change the name because "someone" is offended? Is there anything that everyone will agree on? Is there a name that absolutely no one will be offended by?

The Tampa Bay Rays have gone to a sunlight-style logo. The sun causes skin cancer; to which many people have lost loved ones. As I said before, "Yankees" was a derogatory term directed at Americans during the Revolutionary and Civil Wars. Bears? People have been killed by them. Pirates? Same deal. Bills? No one likes getting Bills. And personally, I'm offended by "Pelicans" cause it's just stupid.

If the gold standard in sports nicknames is ensuring that no one is offended, welp, enjoy your sports-free world.

My problem with the idea that if it offends anyone, then it should be changed is that we now live in a day and age in a society that people have been programmed to find the offensive in everything, even if no offense exists. Every single thing you can think of, no matter how positive, now is offensive to at least one group (I'm of Jewish decent, and the idea that people are offended by Christmas is beyond pathetic to me. The promotion of peace, love, and hope is offensive? Get out of here with that backwards ideology. No one is demanding that everyone become a Christian and become enraptured in the faith and dogma of the religion when they say Merry Christmas :wall:).

If the vast majority of Native Americans were offended by the name "Redskins" than there would be some merit to considering and ultimately changing the name. But when you have such a minute minority that have a problem with it, you have to wonder, as a rational adult, what/who really is the problem here.

There are people in this country that are offended by Old Glory and even the title "Americans." They are a very small, minute minority. Yet, even if they grew to 25% of the population, it would be ridicules for our nation to change its flag and title and erase 2 centuries of tradition because a small group chooses to be offended by a symbol and name that inspires pride and hope to so many others.

The vast majority of Native Americans are not offended by the Redskins logo or name; many of them are proud of it. And, they are the only one's who opinions on this subject matter. Almost every single person that is making any noise about this "issue" are not even close to being Native Americans. This mess needs to just stop!

exactly.

when people start trying to mess with my skins I get grouchy. and ive had a cup of Tim hortons devil juice so Im marginally less grumpy now

See, I think that as well, but kind of want to try just to confirm that they will. Getting blown off like that gives you evidence to show later....

'The NFL franchise assigned to Washington'? :)

The Redskins are not a Government agency or subagency chartered in Washington to do X or Y.

It is a PRIVATE COMMERCIAL BUSINESS.

The reason the Redskins are in Washington has nothing to do with direction from the NFL. This franchise originally played in Boston in 1932. An OWNER moved it to Washington.

I am amused when those that have built nothing, achieved nothing and own nothing decide they are going to satisfy their own sense of guilt and purposelessness by latching on to a subject like this which costs them nothing.
