One would think that Jack Del Rio would learn his lesson this week. In the Thursday nighter vs. Chicago, JDR's conservative style played right into the hands of a fragile Justin Fields. It was exactly what he needed to settle in and gain confidence in the passing game. Desmond Ridder has not put up numbers that concern you as a passer this year whatsoever. On three occasions this year, he has passed for slightly over 200 yards (201), or less than 200 yards (115 and 191). Coincidentally, in those games, he was sacked at least 4 times, and on one occasion vs. Detroit, was sacked 7 times. Last week vs. Houston, he wasn't sacked once and ended up throwing for a career high 329 yards. It's simple - pressure the hell out of the kid and try to suffocate him. If he beats you, he beats you. For the love of God though, Jack, don't beat yourself.
 
I had an outside chance of going to this game. I was possibly going to be driving through Atlanta Sunday morning. The temptation to go to the game would have been strong. But then Thursday morning I found out I wasn’t going to Georgia, then Thursday night confirmed that I wouldn’t be missing much. I haven’t giving up hope, but 3 straight winnable games, a home date with Philly, and then the awful Patriots, this was the stretch to show this was a different team. Thursday night really took the wind out of my sails. Even if they win these next 2 games, I’ll still look back at last week and think how much better 5-2 would have been than 4-3.
 
Only three more days until I don’t have to hear the ‘we have twelve games left’ mantra from Rivera ever again.
 
My heart says we win because I believe the guys will come out in a prove something game after last weeks abysmal debacle of putrid stanktasticness. My gut says we lose because I have zero, none, nada, zip, zilch nor one iota of faith that Del Rio will have a successful game plan because we haven't seen one all freakin year.
 
Part of me understands where JDR is coming from here - it has to be frustrating to be questioned so much. And yet, he has to understand that his unit isn't cutting it so questioning him is natural and maybe he shouldn't be such a tool over it.

 
No matter how he answers, the press and fans will kill him for it, so he gave them nothing.

Most folks here, if put in the same situation, would do the same.
 
I think he's protecting his players which I have no problem with. He doesn't have to be such a dick about it though. That's a choice. The media guys are just doing their jobs and it's a fair question. You don't hear the media guys asking questions like 'Jack - your defense sucks balls. How do you explain it?'.

It's impossible not to really like Bienemy and not to be impressed based on how he handles pressers and interviews. I wonder if he's as good a communicator with the players?
 
That’s two pressers in a row that Del Rio has had that type of interaction with Standig. Maybe there is more to it?
 
Standig asks more direct questions. But yeah, possible there’s some kind of issue there.
 
It would help if Standig just asked directly instead of beating around the bush. Honestly, the whimpy way that question was approached would have irked me too and likely gotten a more sarcastic response from me than it did del Rio.

He’s trying not to elicit the kind of snarky aggressive response he got. He tried to approach it delicately and still got the ‘are you an idiot?’ tone.

If it were me, and I was one of these coaches knowing I’m probably wrapping up my current gig (with no guarantee there will be future ones), I would be trying to salvage my reputation and not go out looking petty, ambivalent, or angry.

But hey, that’s just me.
 
JDR has proven time and again that he isn't that guy though.

Granted, I'm not sure that pressers with anyone on this coaching staff, other than EB, are worth anyone's time at the moment.
 
I assume these pressers are NFL mandated. If they weren’t, I would recommend JDR avoid them and Ron do fewer of them.

So I went and looked. Here is the NFL's media policy on the Pro Football Writers Association site.

Coordinators are indeed required to be available for a press conference once per week for 10-15 minutes.

To be honest, after looking at the policy, I am kinda stunned at the mandated amount of time that elements of the team have to be available.
 
After listening to the whole JDR presser, I have to say he answered some tough questions pretty honestly and without snark. Maybe that one question just rubbed him the wrong way?
 
IMO, Standig isn’t a bad reporter and try to listen to him on his podcast and guest appearances on other podcasts. However, I do feel find him a little full of himself at times and imagine if there is a difference between him and JDR - it’s simply that JDR doesn’t respect him. JDR is very old school
