Official Game Thread - Week 3 - Raiders @ Commanders

That Quan score definitely makes it look like he’s getting blamed for the guys running free through slow LB zones who then have absolutely no one around them. Happened multiple times against the Packers and Raiders. I question sometimes how they determine assignment when they don’t know the play call and modern DC’s get better and better at disguising man/zone and assignment. We’ve obviously had some communication issues in the secondary and there’s been a problem with handing off speedsters between zones, but Quan’s score looks like he’s taking a beating in these evaluations for whatever reason and that wasn’t an overwhelming impression I got watching the games.
 
I don't know whether Whitt, the secondary/passing game coaches (Simmons? Donatell? Gay?), or individual players are most to blame, but through 3 games now we've consistently seen a disconnect back there while the front 7 seems to generally be doing a good job.

Lattimore regularly fails to impress, Sainristil actually looks worse than he did as a rookie instead of more comfortable in the same system, and the safeties have gotten beaten way more than expected. Very disappointed in our passing game defense. Coaches know by now what they have in Wagner and Luvu, pass defense is not their strength - but instead of scheming to account for that, we get Tucker and others roaming free. Infuriating.
 
I'm still looking for Luvu to start making an impact. Lattimore played pretty well on Sunday but I still have concerns.

Payne just frustrates the Hell out of me. When he's in a contract year, which he is this season in reality, he shows that he can be a dominant force. Once signed he, well we know what happens next. So I'm going to enjoy this season of effort and laugh at the team who signs him to a big deal.

And if he earns his money this year we have the option to keep him next year, his actual contract year when he will again be incentivized to perform. We can then trade him before the 27 season.

There have been bad breakdowns, no doubt, but not like what we saw, for example, under del rio.

i personally think they've had more good than bad and it has lead to a lot of coverage sacks but when the breakdowns have occurred its been ugly.

Really hoping they can clean up the holes in their zone defense but what im seeing has been better than we've had in quite some time.

One analysis of the Packers game I read broke down multiple plays where Kraft got completely open.

They said it was schemed that way- they recognized Wash in a zone with x people and flooded that zone with x+1. They set up a scheme where both TEs went to that zone and only one could be covered; the other would have to be wide open.

I don’t know all of the details but they made it sound like a Defensive scheme issue. I guess it depends on how they assigned roles (man/zone) but probably one of the issues is what you mentioned. One of Wags or Luvu has to cover if everyone is out for pass. Otherwise someone has to be open. It is always a question if the players can execute and the scheme can get the player open fast enough for QB to find them. That isn’t always easy but GB at least made it look frighteningly easy for some bad plays (good blocking and execution of that plan).

What I read made it sound like we had way too few people schemed for that zone though. They made it sound like we made it way too easy for GB. Not sure about the accuracy of that statement.

Damn I had this very thought during the game but forgot to share it. You are right, we basically get Payne on a contract year for 2 seasons and we see how that changes things as far as his performance. Just so frustrating to have a player who can be a dominant player if he just wanted to be one.

The narrtive about Payne as to how he was determined for a big season -- mirrors his other contract year. I know a person or two here likes to say this isn't a contract year but it indeed is considering I think there is no way the play him in the high 20s in 2026. The guarateed money exit ramp is this off season, I am sure Payne's agent as cued him into that.
 
I was assuming his injury came from landing hard directly on the helmet on that deep ball, and that it was a massive contusion issue which is serious pain management. Hopefully it’s not something with the actual muscle being pulled at all, that could linger. A bad bruise would heal and not be an issue, once he’s back. As with Jayden, we need to be paranoid with McLaurin so we have in when it counts. Frustrating, though.

I was concerned also, but when I looked at the penalties.

1. Holding on Conerly blocking Crosby
2. Holding on Tunsil on the same play where Conerly got called. Ooops.
3. Holding on Wylie
4. Holding on Conerly blocking Crosby
5. Illegal use of the hands to the face on Tunsil, same play as a Conerly holding.

5 total penalties, ironically Tunsil and Conerly both committed penalties on the same play twice. Don't see that often.

I'm more concerned about Tunsil's penalties, even though only one was accepted, than Conerly's. Wylie will get called from time to time, that's who he is. Also first start at guard, so I give him a slight pass.

Good news: Paul didn't commit a penalty AND no before the snap penalties.

We should email Kliff because I’m sure this never occurred to him. :p

Also, have Lane sprint down field and throw him the damn ball a few times. If you connect on 1 out of 5, defenses will start looking for it and rolling coverage that way. Kliff probably doesn't realize this either.

EDIT to add (on a more serious note), Reid used to love to do something with DJax and Hill, where he would have them run off coverage on one side, and then run somebody into the area which was vacated. A lot of teams do this with 2 WRs on one side, the fast one sprints deep, the other one hooks up on a curl, or some type of an in/slant. But both WRs start on the same side. And often times, when the receiver catches the ball, they are stationary.

What Reid loved to do was line up DJax outside by himself on one side, and then as DJax was sprinting down field, he'd have a TE leak to the vacated spot, or have a RB run some type of a circle route to get to that spot, so the receiver, when they caught the ball, was already moving up field and didn't have to accelerate.

In other news, Reid is smart and knows things about football.

How the hell did will johnson slide so far.

I remember a few years back people hoping we'd lose enough games to get into the top 5 to get him.

Injury concerns be damned theres obviously no way he should have gone in the middle of the second.

He inexplicably fell, as I recall. I believe he was in consideration for our pick in the first.
