Official Game Thread - Week 11 - TNF Edition - Commanders @ Eagles

I also get the sense that we should have sat Daniels to let his ribs heal. I understand the competitiveness and you have to trust that he knows his body, but if we learned anything from RG3 it is to protect your long-term assets.
 
Disappointing result tonight, especially with the offense. They just haven’t seemed the same since Jayden was hurt. Feeling good that they get some extra days to rest though and then we have 2 very winnable home games coming up. Adversity was coming now we get to see how they handle it.
 
What this game showed is what we knew already.

Washington is a good team, but they aren't a contender.

Not yet.

They aren't up there with the Chiefs and the eagles and the Ravens or the Lions.

Maybe next year when this team has been together for two full offseasons and we have another round of free agency and the draft.

Even realizing that, we beat dallas next Sunday and Washington will be 8-4 and still in good shape.
 
If we lose to Dallas and Tennessee then I will really be depressed. Right now, okay- hope the team gets healthy
 
So, having slept on it (barely! Game finished at 4:30 U.K. time and it’s now 7:30! 😂) here’s my thoughts.

Game kinda went as expected, though a little lopsided at the end.

I think it all starts at the o line. It’s been pretty highly ranked this season so far, but it’s beaten up at the moment. Coleman is a rookie, and while he’s been superb this season, rookies gonna rook. He’s also hurt. As are Wylie, Lucas and Biadasz. They all played, but right up until the last minute they were either limited or questionable on the injury report. They weren’t run blocking or pass blocking to the level we’ve seen previously.

Eagles D were constantly blowing up plays behind the LOS. There were a lot of runs for losses especially on crucial 3rd downs.

Daniels also felt himself under pressure and is blatantly still suffering with those ribs. His decision making was off yesterday, his running was tentative and his accuracy was great if you’re throwing the ball at the receivers feet.

I think almost all of this is a side effect of playing 11 straight weeks with no respite, and especially this week being a short one.

Their inability to stay on the field led to our défense wearing down. I think the late flurry of points the Eagles put on the board is almost directly attributable to that. They’d been pounding us with Barkley, and for 2/3 of the game we’d held him in check pretty well. Then they started hitting us late with their other running back (I don’t recall his name… Gains-something?) and once he started hitting long runs, they brought in Barkley to finish the job.
The result was 14 points in a matter of minutes against an exhausted Defence.

Eagles are in much better shape, and in a war of attrition like this one the odds were never in our favour.

Now we have a 10 day rest. Then an easier part of the schedule. (I like our chances of beating both Dallas and Tennessee). Then we FINALLY get our Bye.

Next time we face the Eagles, home at Northwest, we should be in better shape. More rested. Plus we should have Lattimore to bolster the D.

I’m still super optimistic about this season. I’m thinking we end 12-5, and the NFC East is in play still because Philly still has to play Baltimore and Pittsburgh. And a rejuvenated Washington!

We’ve shown that even banged up, battered, and exhausted we can hang with the best teams in the league. Baltimore, Pittsburgh and now Philly were all close (till Philly broke lose at least) so I still think we’ll be the team no one wants to face in the playoffs.

As an addendum to the above: Baltimore and Pittsburgh were also coming off their Bye weeks. I know you play who you play etc, but these things matter in a sport this demanding.

We just need to get healthy. Who knows, a late bye could help us on the playoff push. Maybe those teams with early byes could be in the same position we are now! 😝
 
Defense played well enough to win and if they had gotten any help whatsoever from the offense, they would have won.

Some of the decisions and play calling were strange. I mean, no wr screens to get Terry going? Still not making any use of Sinnott or McCaffrey?
Purposely running a QB with beat up ribs? Joe Gibbs would never.

#5 was bad last night. Injured plus the rookie wall maybe?

Overall, this team is not ready for prime time fights with really good to elite clubs. Not enough talent up front on both sides of the ball to start out with.
There were probably guys open last night. Always are as someone will post clips in a day or two showing it. But if you can't create a clean pocket,especially with a beat up QB , then your battered QB won't see them.

This team is a breath of fresh air to a beleaguered fanbase and that's great. Absolutely needed. But they never were contenders and I think some fans bought into that narrative that the DC media and national pundits were selling. Even the MVP talk too, which quite frankly,was laughable.

It does feel good to be winning games again,don't get me wrong. But after tonight, everyone should know where this team's place is.

I agree the defense has been playing much better. Sainristil played exceptionally well vs. AJ Brown tonight! I think they were gassed by the 4th quarter because our offense couldn't stay on the field.
 
I think I saw a lack of urgency in the last 4 minutes or so of the game. Slow to get back to the huddle and get set. Yes, we were down 16 points and it would have taken a miracle to tie it, but you got to give yourself time and hurry up. I mean, they did get the TD and 2pt conversion they needed, they were half way there and ran out of time.

I was OK going for it on 4th down. It's what teams do now and I like my coach being aggressive but not reckless. What I did not understand was calling a timeout when the Eagles were driving at the end of the first half. The goal there was to keep it to 3 pts, there was never going to be enough time for the offense to get into scoring range.
 
Ehht, opponents be damned, there's a shit cloud following this team that wasn't there at the beginning of the season.

Hopefully we can shake it off otherwise we could go Into one of those unrecoverable tail spins we see happen almost every year in the nfl.

I think my biggest problem with the game is not that we lost, we knew the eagles were better, certainly better on paper and that's not even that close, it's that our body language and overall enthusiasm and spirit are way down especially with jayden.

He just doesn't look like the same player who was all energy and smiles, now it's anger frustration and pouting.

Hopefully quinn can work his magic and get this teams head back in the right place.

It was so obvious to me what was about to happen I actually shut the game off down 2 with 8 minutes left, that's how confident I was that the wheels were about to come off and I was right to get the extra sleep.
 
I think we all saw what was coming. But there was always hope, you never know what is really going to happen in sports which is what makes it so great. And that's why I watched to the end.
 
The team did nothing offensively all night, yet they still had an opportunity to give the defense a potential slim lead in the 4th quarter with six minutes or so left in the fourth quarter. We owed the defense the opportunity to take it across the finish line last night, not the other way around. Horrendous call by Quinn not electing to place the game in the hands of our special teams and defense.

BRob: 16 rushes, 3.9ypc
Barkley: 24 rushes, 4.2ypc

This is the SAME thing that happened with the Steelers. They were having success running the ball. Not tons, but enough. By no means should they have been so pass-heavy in either of these games. Jayden's best games, and Commanders' best wins have been in games with a lot of balance.

Honestly these past two games are pretty much what I expected from Kliff all year. When they were winning, the playcalls had the flow, running and passing were so intermixed, defense didn't know what to expect. In my opinion, from what I can see here - he is not calling the same level of game he had been.

They ran the ball 28 times and threw it 32 times, and many of those passes were in garbage time when you always pass a lot. That is a pretty high run to pass ratio in today's game. No if anything I thought the play calling was too conservative, they never looked much past the line of scrimage with their passes much like the opener. That tells me the team thought Jayden and the OL were injured going into the game and it played out that way.

As for the defense they held up very well considering the offense failed to give them a break with long drives. They were just put on the field far too many times and eventually the Eagles offense scored points. But for most of the game the defense held up it's end.
 
I might have my Sunday's back. Quinn going for it instead of taking the lead on the road in division may be enough for me to take the quick out on the guy and wish everyone Godspeed. I thought we exorcised those demons by getting rid of desperate river crap Ron.

Yeah, this is pretty much how I saw it.

I’d been reading an article last week saying how our o-line was one of the highest ranked in the league, and I think we’d all been pleasantly surprised by how they had done so far this year. But the injury report was super concerning the last week or two. We don’t have the depth to sustain quality when injuries happen. We were ‘forced’ to play starters who were very much not 100%. Meanwhile the Eagles (I think) had only 1 player on their IR.

JD was under pressure and there were missed blocks galore both in the pass protection and the run game. Eagles players often blew up our plays behind the LoS. Case in point that 2nd and inches, that became a 3rd and 1, then a 4th and 2 as we kept trying to run it and got stymied every time.

Mistakes like that come from fatigue. We held up early while we had energy, but our tanks ran dry long before the Eagles did.

Daniels just looks tired. Every time we saw him on the bench he looked drained. Not the spark plug he had been previously. Injury + Rookie wall.

Also consider the Eagles have had it pretty easy since their bye. They’ve yet to play the top tier teams we have, and while we got into a slugfest with Pittsburgh on Sunday, they walloped Dallas enough to rest starters late in the game.

I think if we’d have faced them on even terms we could have won. As it was, the scheduling had made this a lopsided affair before the first snap.

I’m reserving judgment on any other speculation till we see if the team rebounds with a bit of rest.

Nice to hear the voice of reason as a poster announces he is quitting a 7-4 team after a loss.
