Official Game Thread - Week 10 - @ Seahawks

I know nothing about the defensive assistants on this staff. But I am confident they can still lose games with any of them the same way they do with Jack
I could call a better defense and I’d be embarrassingly bad. My calls would be like

“Cover someone, damn you.”

And

“Knock the QB on his ass.”

And

“Close the holes and tackle. Stop with the read and react. Attack and impose your will.”

Also, I’d arm all my assistant coaches with tranquilizer darts and give them the green light to shoot at will.

No, I don’t fire Rivera because there is no one to come in at this late date and have time to get up to speed as the headman.

The thinking in asking Ron to become more involved in the defense to me is reasonable - he knows the players and the trend in their play - and put back in charge of play calling may very well come up with some tweaks to the scheme and tendencies to make the unit play better together.

The one change in DC to me doesn’t add up to too much drama.

It’s having the pride and professionalism to show you can add something to the equation and help the team.

I get your logic. But asking a HC who can't manage the duties he already has at a high level to serve as his own DC, and expect that things are going to be better, I'm not sure that is likely to happen. And it might be one change, but we've already traded away two first rounders... sacking the DC midseason is a pretty big single change. Again, my number one question is 'what do you hope to accomplish by it?' and to me it feels like it would be little more than a 'doing something is better than doing nothing' move.

I think it's very likely our season ended yesterday and the housecleaning is no doubt coming. Why not just wait for it? Just my opinion, I know there are a lot of fans who want to see changes now.

Begs the question, who are they using the darts on? :)

My principle target would be corrupt refs.

I’d also have snipers with laser sights aimed into the NFL offices.

I think I'm in the extreme fan minority in not being outraged by the Forbes ejection. It was a defenseless receiver, he wasn't trying to make a play on the ball, he delivered a pretty vicious helmet to helmet shot, and pretty much committed the foul the rule is designed to discourage. I think the 'ejection' aspect should probably be better defined, but to me - it was a pretty egregious foul. We've seen hits on our guys that warranted ejections, and not gotten them. But I have a hard time giving a reason why this shouldn't be an ejection. As far as Forbes comments - ridiculous. The ball was already falling to the ground so you weren't trying to separate him from it - if Forbes isn't launching his helmet at the WR, he probably sees it's not necessary. Anyway, a lot of things to be upset about yesterday but for me this wasn't one of them.

Decide for yourself.

I'm in the flag for PF, but no ejection camp. I think ejections should be for egregious hits or intentional hits. We've seen far worse hits this season that somehow escaped being flagged at all.

Same. The penalty was correct. The Receiver also started to dip a little. If he was a beat slower there, Forbes would have been helmet to shoulder or his helmet would have whiffed all together. The ejection was a reach.

How much more egregious do you get though - I mean, he saw the WR was defenseless, lowered his head, and absolutely launched helmet to helmet into him. The 'intentional' part (not sure if that is a part of the rule or not) would be that if he wasn't trying to separate the WR from the ball (the ball was already falling to the ground) what other intent could there be other than to deliver a hit to the head? If a Seattle player does this, we are saying it was a warranted ejection.

I think the most reasonable *mitigating* factor was the speed at which the play happened. It is tough for a defender to stop and avoid doing what Forbes did. But the rule doesn't say 'if you can avoid delivering a helmet to helmet shot, please do'. You either committed the penalty or you didn't. A lot of folks are pointing to earlier helmet to helmet shots our guys have taken (like the one on Logan Thomas) but to me, that just makes the point. If we felt like an ejection was warranted for that shot, why would we feel it wasn't for Forbes?

Anyway, I just thought it was an interesting situation. The NFL, like with a lot of things, seems happy enough to have a nebulous definition of what warrants ejection. You'd think they could make it a little less subjective?

I would be fine with the ejection if we had seen it enforced consistently all season with all teams. The reality is that we have watched our own players treated far worse than this without the ejection so it kind of feels like being targeted.

The flag was fair. I'll be okay with the ejection when I see someone from another team tossed for doing this to one of our guys.

If guy is reaching up, facing you, not running full speed either. Like that hit on Logan in Denver.

It was a rough hit. It deserved a penalty. .

I get that sentiment

Seems to me Forbes was trying to make a "play" on the ball or at least he was trying to time the hit to dislodge the ball from the receiver. Again, because it was spearing you get no complaint from me about the flag. Ejection seems so rare in the NFL that I'd rather it be used on plays that were obviously late and obviously intended to cause injury. Plays that were in no way part of the game.

I won't die on this hill though. If it happened to one of ours I'd have been screaming.

Yeah, I think what you guys are missing is that the ball was not in the WRs hands. Your intent can't be to separate the ball from the WR if he doesn't have it. Even though Forbes lowers his head to deliver the hit, I think he can still see that (and it doesn't matter if he can, the point is, he should've been able to see it).

full speed it looked like he had it in his hands and was bringing it in. He took his eye off to the ball and looked at Forbes coming in, and the ball went through his hands.

One thing I saw someone note on Twitter. Sam Howell looked cool as a cucumber all day long in one of the NFL's loudest, most raucous, most intimidating stadiums. You look at how he has performed in tough environments like Seattle and Philadelphia and it is impressive.

Magic is always... on brand :)

Had Washington been able to score more points than the Seahawks, there's a good chance they win that one.

Only in Washington does a player labeled as ‘reluctant to tackle’ get ejected for being too rough. 🤣

The New York review folk are the gift that keeps on giving.
