Official Game Thread - Week 10 - @ Seahawks

I'll rewatch the game, but what I saw was a hard fought road contest against a pretty solid Seahawks team. We had some tough calls late. Obviously, we fell short - but I don't think this game is one it's fair to blame on one unit or the other. There were a number of plays that needed to be made to secure a win. Neither the offense or the defense made enough of them, but I am not going to blame either unit or any individual player for failing to make them.

Yep. That goes to show just how awful they've been. This was their best game and they were that bad.
 
My takeaways:

Sam Howell is the answer. Get a good GM and talent evaluators and build around him.

They can run the ball...when they want to. EB just lacks the commitment to do it

They have no legit TE on this team

The LB Corp is a major weakness and kills the defense week in and week out.

The main thing above all else is we have a 23 yr old QB who barring catastrophic injury, should be our QB for at least the next ten years!!

How bout them apples?
 
My quick take.

Losing this game might be for the best. I hoped we would pull this one out. I always root for us to win, but unless one believed this team was capable of some epic run the rest of the way, it was hardly likely we either get to the playoffs, or make noise in the playoffs if we somehow manage to get there.

Winning, even if it even remotely reinforces the idea that Rivera and Company are part of a future solution, isn't necessarily a good thing. Ron, Martin Mayhew, and Marty Hurney - they all need to retire. There needs to be a complete front office and coaching sweep. Although winning is generally a good thing, in our case any winning that might call that clean sweep into question would be to the detriment of this franchise. Put simply, there is nothing in winning that helps the long term interests of this organization right now.

So I'm okay with a strong showing against Seattle that makes the inevitable... more inevitable.

Short of winning the Superbowl, there's no way Rivera and the Marty's survive.

A win today wouldn't have changed that IMO. The die is already cast.
 
I agree - it should be cast. But one thing we should all understand is that fan assumptions don't mean shit. Anything is possible. So I'll continue to believe anything that cements a house-cleaning in the postseason is a good thing.

I think that's why I called this a Ben Kenobi game in the game chat.

In Star Wars, when Ben confronts Darth, he tells Vader he can't win. If Ben wins then Vader dies, but if Ben wins he becomes something greater. In losing, we move towards the greater future. In winning... well, we would have won.
 
This becoming a weekly observation now:

Sam Howell throws for 312 yards and 3 touchdowns with no picks but Washington surrenders even more yards and points on defense to lose once again.

Del Rio needs to go. And I don’t see why it has to be 7 weeks from now.

He gets far from the most out of his unit. That has been the case for much of the past 3 plus years.
 
They're all going man.

In season firings don't accomplish much imho. Who replaces Del Rio? And what difference does it make?

Massive change is coming soon enough.
 
Trying to elevate from my base mindset of wanting to enjoy a Sunday win (every Sunday regardless of opponent or state of my team).. I have to say that I expected us to get blown up today. It just seemed like a game where, we've had a couple weeks of relative success, there was all kinds of generally positive media coverage, and that's the exact game that Ron Rivera-lead teams get humiliated in. Particularly going into a hornet's next like Seattle, I fully expected it.

Instead, I saw us score on the opening drive, and generally stay in the ball game all the way till the end.

I'm hardly satisfied with the end result. But I'd be lying if I didn't say they fared better than I really expected.
 
If I were the owner I would tell Rivera to fire Del Rio and take over as DC for the stretch run of the season.

Rivera has 30 years of experience on that side of the ball.

I see other HCs out there that are their own OC or DC.

In this case it could be framed as ‘we want to see what this personnel on D can do the last 6 weeks with your direct input on the field’ etc.

Why? What would be the point of that move?
 
There have to be consequences for failure.

You just can’t run the same crap out there for 6 more weeks and tell the offense they have to score 35 points to win any of the remaining games.

I think Rivera can simplify what this unit is trying to do and get some confidence and better performance out of them.

I don’t get the ‘we have to leave the staff in place’ and just accept getting hit over the head with a bat each week.

I think the move itself will cause players to refocus on that side of the ball.
 
That’s fan talk. No disrespect intended as I’ve given plenty of it over the years. There ARE consequences. This whole staff is getting cleaned out at seasons end. I’m asking - halfway through this season - what is gained by canning staff?

I did read your response, that it will help the players refocus, I just don’t think it makes much of a difference when there will likely be all new coaches here next season. It’s not satisfying, but riding it out is the best course.

Less drama is best at this point imho.

It’s OK. We just have a difference of opinion.

My view here is the same as in business - if I am paying you to work and outcomes don’t match expectations then I am going to try to find a way to reshuffle things to get that needle pointed in the right direction.

As long as I am paying I want more than zombies or the walking dead continuing to carry on while we bleed.
 
I can appreciate that. But if that’s the perspective you fire Rivera immediately and maybe Del Rio too.
 
No, I don’t fire Rivera because there is no one to come in at this late date and have time to get up to speed as the headman.

The thinking in asking Ron to become more involved in the defense to me is reasonable - he knows the players and the trend in their play - and put back in charge of play calling may very well come up with some tweaks to the scheme and tendencies to make the unit play better together.

The one change in DC to me doesn’t add up to too much drama.

It’s having the pride and professionalism to show you can add something to the equation and help the team.

I know nothing about the defensive assistants on this staff. But I am confident they can still lose games with any of them the same way they do with Jack
 
Maybe the worst indictment of Del Rio is that the defense we saw him trot out in week one is essentially the same defense we see today.

You would have thought he’d try to change something up. You’d think he’d try to use the power of the bench more (He did bench Forbes) There just seems to be no effort on Del Rio’s part. No inspiration. He’s sleepwalking through his play calling. You want to know why we so rarely generate turnovers? It’s because we never fool a QB and we rarely pressure them into mistakes. The holes in our zones are well understood and easily exploited. The shortcomings of our players are easily maximized.

I had some hope that the trades would force Del Rio to get out of his rut. Yet 80% of the time, we rush four and use that soft zone that covers no one. I mean has it caused even a single coverage sack all year? If your defense is the worst in the league what’s the harm if you switch it up?

From what I’ve been reading, Seattle has been a bad offense all year. They sure looked effective yesterday.
