Official Game Thread - Preseason Week 3 - Commanders @ Ravens

If the score were flipped I'd think we have some really good depth and are at a point where other teams will be interested in the players we release. Instead I feel our depth stinks and we need to scour other teams cuts.

I'd also not be left thinking how in the world can the team come out that flat? Instead I'd feel good about the teams attitude moving forward, like they were I a good head space as DQ might say. Instead they looked like they were in outer space some of the time

Yeah how can they not have the juice if they are enttrenched in battles for roster spots? And that's not only for this team but if they get cut, it would be potentially for other teams

To me the issue with last night was its not some wild outlier incident. For the last two weeks we got all this happening.

A. Maybe the Dolphins are the worst team in the NFL. As good as Washington looked against Miami -- still factor this: They couldn't run against them in the joint practice. The Dolphins first team offense cut throught the defense like a knife through hot butter. And the Giants took on the Dolphins the next week and dominated them even more.

B. Then we kept hearing about the O line struggles in camp and they can't run the ball well.

C. Then the meh performance against the Lions where Quinn said they looked to be in disarray

D. Then getting dominated by Baltimore in the joint practice.

E. Then get dominated in the preseason game.

F. And we got some deja vu from 2025. Jayden not throwing a pass. Similar narratives about NE dominating the joint practice and the preseason game. We shrugged this off last summer. But all the negativity showed up as meaningful.

For me personally, I don't know. I predicted 10-11 wins a month ot so ago. Some here shurg off this all, some think it means something. I don't know. But I can't shrug this off considering what happened last summer.

The only part I am holding onto (with both hands and some teeth) is that the talent level watching from the sidelines this year is superior to last year’s team. That doesn’t at all excuse the 2s, 3s, and won’t be heres poor performances. At all.

SIP I agree with you to a word on the facts of the case.. almost every word. Is there genuinely one poster on BGO who refuses to criticize AP? I’ll give you 100 BGO points if you can correctly call them out.

I am able to shrug off the reasons pessimism you shared because I just don’t think many of them are all that predictive..

Aside from one.. I always worry when the beat is consistently negative on particular position group throughout preseason.

Offense and vibes were panned throughout the summer of 2025. This year the consistent negativity has centered exclusively on the IOL. I’m holding out hope that is patched up ASAP.

DQ promised to change it up this offseason and we heard great things the first two weeks through the first intrasquad scrimmage against Miami. Then after that, he reversed course and went back to his old ways during every preseason game and it really felt like the team lost its edge.

Again, preseason may not matter but then again, it might.
I've said for awhile that he does not really learn from his mistakes.

In the strictest sense, any of us would be foolish to believe 100% in any player, coach, or GM. None of these guys are perfect, and nobody here thinks they are. We all know at least something about football, we're all rabid fans, and there are plenty of smart people here. So if the definition of being "pro-Peters" is believing he's perfect and immune from criticism, then sure — I don't think anyone fits that description.

At the same time, I've been on these boards for roughly two decades. I'd have to be pretty oblivious not to get a feel for who generally likes a player, coach, or GM and who doesn't. People's predispositions aren't that hard to pick up on if you read enough of their posts. And, lol, I probably pay way too much attention to this stuff.

With Peters specifically, I actually think he has more critics here right now than defenders. But there are certainly some posters who generally like what he's doing, whether they embrace the "Peters defender" label or not. Maybe it doesn't feel that way in recent weeks, tough to be uber optimisitc of late but certainly in the off season.

I was going back and forth a lot with one poster who I've known since the ES days who hasn't been here in many weeks so hope he's OK. I like the guy and agree with him on plenty of things. But I could tell he was getting frustrated with my increasing skepticism about Peters. And, conversely, I was getting a little frustrated because it felt like he was taking Peters' side on almost every issue, with an occasional criticism sprinkled in. And that was cool, but what annoyed me was he was sort of labeling himself as more balanced. To me being more balanced isn't about taking an outlier view against the masses. it's about being 50-50 on a topic. And IMHO I am much closer to balanced. That is more 50-50 then they are. Doesn't make his take or my take better or worse though -- its just opinion.

So at one point I simply asked him to rank Peters as a GM — excellent, very good, good, average, below average, bad, whatever. He didn't want to do it. My point wasn't to trap him. It was almost the opposite: if you think Peters is really good at his job, that's perfectly fine. Just say it. There's nothing wrong with being bullish on the guy just because he has some loud critics. I have some outlier takes too, and its ok.

There are a few others here who, to my eyes, almost always gravitate toward the positive interpretation of Peters' moves. And that's fine too. I just don't put that much stock in the occasional obvious criticism as proof that someone doesn't generally lean one way -- especially when that obvious criticism doesn't accompany any shot at him at a macro level. I'm a huge Jayden guy, for example. I can point out that he needs to stay healthy, protect himself better, improve certain things, etc. But let's be real: probably 90% of what I say about Jayden is positive. I'm clearly predisposed to believe in the player. I don't think there's anything wrong with acknowledging that.

Peters is more complicated for me.

If the definition of "balanced" is believing Peters generally knows what he's doing while acknowledging that every roster has holes and every GM makes mistakes, then sure, the more pro-regime posters are naturally going to sound balanced by that standard.

A. Is there a method to the madness with Peters? Of course there is. Anyone arguing that he's just randomly making moves with no thought behind them would be making a silly argument.

B. Has Peters made good moves? Absolutely. He's made plenty of them.

But ultimately, I judge the aggregate. And I'm willing to change my opinion as new information comes in.

I liked the Peters hire. I defended him early, including even defending the initial returns from the 2024 draft. I thought he did a good job in 2024 free agency. More recently, I've praised his 2026 FA haul. I criticized the handling of WR, but I also said I'd have his back if he landed Diggs. He did, and I've praised him for how the WR room looks now. I defended the Biadasz decision initially, too. After seeing how the replacement plan unfolded, I've changed my mind on that one.

So this isn't a case where I've decided Peters sucks and then worked backward to criticize everything he does. My opinion has evolved with the moves and the results.

And the idea that I or others don't recognize Peters has reasons for his decisions, or that he isn't constantly thinking about ways to improve the roster, isn't really my argument. Of course he is. Peters isn't an idiot. I'm sure he works his ass off, thinks through these decisions, talks them through with his staff, and believes there's logic behind what he's doing.

The interesting question to me isn't whether Peters has a thought process. Obviously he does.

The question is: How good is that thought process, and how often does it produce the right decisions?

So far, my answer is: mixed. Some good. Some bad. Overall, okay. Nothing special yet.

And most of my angst about this comes from one thing: I desperately want to see this team win a Super Bowl, and I think we're looking at roughly a two-year window where Jayden's rookie contract gives them a tremendous opportunity to be aggressive. That's why my standard is higher than simply being competent. I'm hoping for more than mediocre.

One of the posters here who openly considers himself a Peters defender — and I actually give him credit for owning the label — recently said he thinks this team could go 8-9. That's perfectly reasonable as a prediction. But it's also where my perspective differs.

If we're in Year 3 of this regime and the result is 8-9, I'm going to have a hard time simultaneously defending the job Peters has done. Maybe that's an unfair standard. Maybe I'll be proven wrong. But that's where I am.

I'm not asking Peters to be perfect. I'm asking him to be really good, because with Jayden on a rookie deal and a legitimate Super Bowl window potentially sitting in front of them, "OK" isn't what I'm hoping for.

If Chaisson and Oweh can come back soon. And they figure out center. I think the season can turn in a good way.

Defensively you can add in Amos, plus Settle is just back and Armstrong will be back in week 2

Amos is starting to worry me, he was banged up for a good chunk of last season and banged up now. I hope that's not just how its going to be.

Agree about Armstrong.

I've gone from being optimisitc about the season to feeling its a total wildcard.

A. On one front, i like the Flores scheme and I like what I've heard about the pressure packages in camp. I like this WR corp now.

B. On another front, I don't like the whole vibe around the team now, reminds me some of 2025 summer -- and i don't like the reports and what we've seen about the O line and the running game

It's such a shame that by just signing decent backup vet center (after the draft or even just a couple weeks ago), things could look different.

They then could have focused on another CB and be pretty set.

If they get whipped badly in the first couple weeks, that vibe you mention is going to further deteriorate. The fuzz will be knocked off DQ's fuzzy persona

Frankly, almost all these line issues should have been taken care of in the off season, certainly over the summer. And Peters gets ALL the blame for that

Could be. Or was he handed a load of positives from DQ and staff on the progressions and from the training staff on some of the players Allegretti and Amos?

If they needed something bad like a backup C, DQ or Bough should have been jumping up and down with concerns

Again, preseason may not matter but then again, it might.

That’s my take too. Maybe the Tunsil injury spooked him?

I think if I were DC after this preseason, I'd make a rule right now that spending the summer posing in spear, retro, new uniforms whatever is OUT. Assuming he's around next year. And if he is, maybe he should do a Shottenheimer and put this bunch thru some Oklahoma drills all summer

Something that really frustrated me about the Defense last night, was how horrendous the tackling was. Almost everyone was trying to do the push-down tackle instead of wrapping the ball carrier up.

Pathetic ole defense.

It's always dangerous to take anything away from a game where MAYBE 10 players who played make the final roster and NONE of those are expected to contribute in any meaningful way in regular season games.

However, getting your doors blown off by a team in exactly the same situation is a bad look.

The vibe around the team is bad. It's like it flipped like a switch when Tunsil got hurt. As soon as he went down, it let all the air out of the balloon.

To some extent I get it. In an instant one of your lynchpin players on offense goes down with a season ending injury. I’m sure it makes them question why they put maximum effort in at this stage. The thing is, that’s the business they have chosen, and injuries are always a threat to occur. We used to have a mentality here of “you train the way you play.” With the league the way it is now it just doesn’t seem like it makes a lot of sense to do it that way anymore…and because of that is September really the TRUE “pre-season” now?

The problem with that is those games actually count.

I mean, Tunsil got injured on a freak 1:1 rep where his arm just sortof got caught up. It wasn't a full-go, padded Oklahoma drill type of thing. It was kindof just bad luck. I'm sure in his NFL career, he's had the same rep in games and practice at least 5,000 times.

If it had happened in some 11-11 drill with live contact, it would be different. But it didn't.

I think, however, to the larger point, Quinn needs to figure out how they can get their mojo back.

I'm not disagreeing with anything said here, just tagging onto the comment about the training staff. I believe Logan Paulson said that they swapped out their head trainer for someone who was VERY cautious (I might be getting part of this wrong, I'm going from memory). Wondering if some of their confidence about injured players stems from the fact that some of these guys could be playing 🤷

You may be on to something. It was said that the trainer was extremely conservative with allowing players to be give the green light to play

If this was the regular season, I bet a lot of the guys who didn't play because of injury would be playing.

There's no reason to push guys in training camp.

What is somewhat distressing is the number of calf strains and hamstring strains, and things like that which are typically non-contact type things. I'm not saying they are conditioning related, like you could be in great shape and doing all the things and still get hurt. But it's a bit more of a trend than I would like.
