Official Game Thread ~*PRESEASON*~ Week 2 - Commanders @ Chiefs

I know that was mostly snark - but YES - there definitely is still a fanbase, and I think it's still bigger than most believe. It's hard to give up fandom. The fact that a lot of folks have speaks to how bad the past 20 years has been.

I think there's a difference between the number of people who 'follow' or still associate themselves as 'Washington fans' and the number of people who go to games. The franchise is mostly a perennial loser, the stadium experience is not good, and it costs a fortune. But there are still a lot of fans.

If you asked me what has diminished the actual fanbase (because I do think it has taken a huge hit, especially over the past few years) I would say (in no particular order):

- Lack of on-the-field success
- Revolving door at head coach
- Inability to find marquee players at key positions, especially QB
- High profile departure of a number of key players under negative circumstances
- Failure of top 'franchise changing' draft picks
- The name change
- The clumsy management of rebranding
- The misogyny/sexual abuse scandal and other executive misconduct and poor behavior
- The NFLs failure to address and seeming protection of and collusion with Dan Snyder
- Incessant mockery and attacks (much of it deserved) on the team by local and national media

What am I missing?
Could t agree more and the F’d up thing is I’ll be there with the kids week one … I guess I’m a glutton for punishment lol .. Anyone else going we’ll be in sec 102

Some of you are speaking as if there are other schemes we could run, I thought the only defensive scheme was a 4/3/4 cover 2 zone?? Are we allowed to do something else?? I don't recall seeing it.

We only rush four and never send a linebacker, safety, no corner blitzes, etc. 4 vs 5 usually ends up bad for the 4 people

I will say I did see us bring St Juste on a blitz from slot corner and he was actually a free rusher.. Mahomes just got the ball out directly into the area St Juste vacated and it went for a long completion.

The other major issue I do have with the picture above, is that we're 4 yards behind the marker on 3rd down. It's a constant cushion... One 3rd down, Jamin Davis came on a blitz but didn't chip or bump the TE on the way in... Mahomes hit the guy in stride and he went for 10 yards...

I saw that, too. I think we all know what the gist of my post was. We don't blitz or rush more than. The front four most of the time.

I agree. I guess i pointed that one out with the ol' act of desperation like "see!!! HOPE!!!" It's likely a false hope, but it's all I can try to latch on to at this point lol.

Was fussing about exactly this on the last pod. JDR does NOT view preseason as an opportunity to work on blitz packages, disguises, press coverage, nothing. It. Is. Vanilla. Which in this case is an insult to a very nice bean.

The fact that it is 3rd and 3 in that still is irrelevant to me. It's pretty much been our defensive look in preseason under JDR on most downs and most distances. THAT is what I have a problem with, given our overall defensive performance during actual games under JDR, because I'm not sure at all we'll be able to simply flip the switch on opening day and run actual defensive schemes with any kind of precision.

If we were returning a top five defense that would be one thing. But we are not. Until we are, I'd really like to see us use the preseason "games" to actually work on some shit.

The question is does JDR view the regular season as an opportunity to work on blitz packages, press coverage, anything? His success rate on third downs makes one wonder.

It's a fair question.

Based on the mental eyeball test, I'd say yes he's more aggressive in the regular season, but no, to date hasn't come across as particularly creative or aggressive on third downs overall. I put at least some of that on personnel limitations in the back seven.

That was a vanilla answer. It IS preseason.

I get the frustration and you guys aren’t wrong. The only thing I’ll say to attempt to balance things a little is that the defense his first year in DC had its moments. If we want to chalk that up to powderpuff down the stretch that’s fair. But year 1 we were a mid-level NFL defense. Last season was a major step back and that’s concerning. The fact that we’ve never gotten (or at least I haven’t heard) any explanation for last seasons decline beyond some injuries I think makes it more concerning.

I think most NFL coaches would call Del Rio a very accomplished DC. I’m not sure one disappointing season makes him a bad coach. It’s on him not to make me look like a tool for being less critical.

We dialed up the perfect defense against Pittsburgh and then seemingly never had that recreated again.

The lack of consistency out of the coaches is baffling. They know what works but refuse to stick to it. AP runs for 96 yards and a TD and then never touches the ball again. We were one of the best screen teams in the league...but, we never used it.

It's tiresome.

I am absolutely with you here brother.

I don't like this soft defense we run, and the Pittsburgh game should be the perfect example of that. The goal of that defense in that game was to give up 0 points.. you could feel it... our defense seems to go into the game thinking "slow them down enough to let our offense keep up" instead of "shut those ---------- down and CONTROL the game"

That play above was 3rd and 3. You can run a vanilla defense, not give anything away, but still not play 6 yards off the ball on 3rd and 3.

Last dance with Washington Football
One more time to kill the pain
I feel the season creepin' in and I'm
Tired of this team again

I’m tired of all the positive talk from the organization.
I’m tired of Rivera really liking what he’s seeing. (I really, really am.)
I’m tired of professional athletes that can’t withstand the rigors of the easy modern day training camps.
I’m tired of hearing about how unimportant preseason games are.
I’m tired of investing both time and emotion in organizational mediocrity.

I’ll see myself out and gladly let the door hit me on the way. Via con dios.

Wow. I guess you meant it :(
