Official Game Thread - Preseason Week 2 - Bengals @ Commanders

I'm hoping to see some analysis of individuals playeres on OL, DL & LB. I saw more from Cole Turner last night than Sinnott (did he play?)
Ref Sinnott. Yeah he was out there quite a bit it seemed. To be honest neither he nor any of the receivers got looks while Jaydan was in there due to the way things worked out. After that it was a combo of Hartman and Johnson so take that with a grain of salt. Was hoping to see more of him last night but I just dont think the opportunities were there. Did notice him blocking quite a bit.

Admittedly, I only watched the first half last night. Hartman makes football unwatchable.

But I saw what i wanted to see. No injuries. Great pass protection. Excellent run blocking. Great run defense. Great tackling. Good QB pressure. Even the special teams were much improved.

The only thing that was lacking to me was pass defense. But the coverage was very good overall… their receivers just made some great plays… there were no communication breakdowns… and we weren’t playing our starting corners.

I came away from that game very pleased.
Same.
We left at halftime.

This is what's outside my door, and Redskinskinfan was here with me for the game.
Everyone in the area knew when he ran that TD in. We went bananas! 🎉

I am still unimpressed with the D-line overall. The pass rush does look a little better than the run defense, and of course I am not going to make full judgments based on preseason games where starters are mixed & matched and not much opponent-specific game-planning, but based on the roster itself, D-line is one area that I have been concerned with the entire offseason.

Hear me out...

Luvu jumped offsides intentionally so that he could get more reps on that drive.

A possibility?

We're his 8th team in as many years.

If he's breaking out now hes the latest bloomer ever.

I think he’s just high motor depth, I doubt he hits another level with us beyond gaining the ability to rush with a lead more often, potentially. Good to see guys who will likely get snaps show effort like that in preseason though

Edit: double post of the same tweet 🤦‍♂️

I wanted Andrew Wiley shipped out a couple years ago, changed my mind, he's become a very valuable back up now that if he had to start a few games Id be fine with it. Competent coaching and scheme?
I think Eric Bieniemy did Wiley no favors, not did Sam Howell because he held the ball. It made him look a lot worse than he was.

Even though Hail Raiser thought Wiley was probably less qualified for his job than a 1st grader teaching advanced physics, I think time has proved Wiley is "just fine." He was "fine" as the RT in a better offense with a much better QB last year, and he's probably one of the best backup swing tackles in the league.

A couple cool things from the game last night:
1. Jayden Daniels ran onto the field to get Bill's TD ball and give it to him.

2. The camera work leaves something to be desired, but the way Brian Baldinger breaks down the Bill touchdown is really cool. Also, he correctly identifies the play as the staple running play of the Hogs/Gibbs yeasrs.

Just some cool stuff.

Edit: My mistake, that’s a different Baldinger video about the same play. Great play by Bates!

Ben Sinnott played. I don’t think he had any catches, but he had some pretty good blocks. The one that stands out is the two tight end set where he and Bates sprung Deebo on a long run.

I think Sinnott is a good third tight end for us because he’s a decent blocker for a receiving tight end, and Kliff needs tight ends who can block for his run schemes, though it sure would be nice to see the guy who set receiving records at Kansas St. start catching some passes in the NFL.

Big John Bates is going to the pro bowl this year. Best player on our team.

I don’t know about best player on the team, but he could well be the best blocking tight end in the league. He was a huge part of that great first half running game last night. He’s also a sneaky good receiver. I love that guy!

JD disagrees

Right, though maybe you can make an argument for Bates as second best

Really though, I could see Bates in the Pro Bowl, he is most definitely one of our best players and one of the best in the business at what he does. There’s a reason we did that contract, he’s a key cog in Kliff’s machine.

The best blocking TE in the league doesn’t get to the pro bowl if he only catches less than 20 passes. Maybe not totally fair but that’s how it is, and that would be more than double what he did last year.

Guys like Kittle and Goedurt get recognition for their blocking because they’re 6th OL out there while also being studs in the receiving game (when healthy). Bates just has the OL part down. He had 8 catches last year lol.
