Official Game Thread - Preseason Week 2 - Bengals @ Commanders

A few thoughts:

Better showing than last week.

Deebo and Jayden both had a big play and left the game without injury.

I might have let Jayden throw a pass before pulling him, but I understand why coach took him out after he put himself at risk on that TD.

Running game looked great in the first half with both JCM and CRod. Good job by the OL and Bates.

Quan looked good. Lane contributed. Some good pass rush.

Should have kept Tinsley.

Special teams were better but not great.

Penalties still a problem.

Neither Hartman nor Johnson look very good, good thing we have Mariota behind JD.

JCM was given a heavy load and seemed to slow down later in the game, not sure if it was blocking, defense keying on him, or a question about his endurance. Maybe a bit of each.

No sign of Luke or Sinnott.

Pretty entertaining game by preseason standards, but I’m ready for the games that count.

After two preseason games, I don't think we have a third string quarterback. Maybe keep one on the practice squad. Maybe just grab someone cut off another squad.
THis is going to depend on Mariota's health. If Mariota can't go week 1, or there are questions about his health, they will keep Josh Johnson on the 53. I guess it's possible they put Mariota on IR at the beginning of the season, then he has to miss either 4 or 6 games, I don't remember.

If Mariota is healthy, then they either keep Josh Johnson as QB3 or MAYBE they can sneak him onto the practice squad.

I don't think Hartman is going to be on the roster, PS or regular, after this preseason. If he is on the PS, it's just to keep continuity in the room and keep one of JD5's friends around and to raise the hotness quotient of the team. (Btw, keeping a guy JD5 likes to have around on the PS is totally fine with me for this year, but we need to go fishing for another BFF next off season.)

Yeah tonight Tinsley looked like a stud, I don't remember much about him from his time here...usually that's a bad sign. But my goodness, now I want to trade for him lol

Unless they already know Kliff's offense, I don't think that works so well. I don't know if there is some random guy from Arizona who might be a guy they could bring in.

My guess is they'll roll with Josh Johnson because he's got some mobility, and he's a veteran, and if your third stringer has to play, you're probably losing anyway.

Just so we're clear, most QB's don't throw that to Tinsley. Great catches, but those were all contested where he still had to be thrown just over the fingertips of the corners. It's not like coverage was bad, he wasn't separating.

It's hard to evaluate our WR options without Mariota/Daniels throwing it. But at least Lane flashed a little (both good and bad)

WE didnt really have a choice though. Tinsley killed his chance here. Is what it is. There is no chance Hartman survives this preseason......Thank Christ.
I can't really remember anything about his tenure here. What led to him being cut?

I wanted Andrew Wiley shipped out a couple years ago, changed my mind, he's become a very valuable back up now that if he had to start a few games Id be fine with it. Competent coaching and scheme?

Would have liked to have seen the OTs go against Hendrickson last night.
I never have confidence when Wiley is up against good edges/ends. He is a good backup as he can be a swing or move inside

Yeah I don’t remember much about Tinsley either. All I found was that we added him as an undrafted free agent in 2023 and had him on our practice squad in 2024. Anyway, both those touchdown grabs were elite plays, I’d be shocked if he isn’t on Cincy’s active roster this year. Given what we have behind Terry and Deebo, you would think we could have used him, so I wonder what the story is there. Maybe one of our members can fill in the blanks.

Certainly looks like we're gonna have a running back by committee approach this year.
Whos gonna be the feature back?
Thought maybe bill but if so why is he taking so many snaps in the 4th quarter of a pre season game.
Can Rodriguez or mcnichols be the guy?
Neither strike me as a load bearing back.
Bill looked decent but even i could hae scored that touchdown and nothing else wow'd me.

I really hope we can get a true stud running back in next years draft.

Tinsley didn't offer much or anything to the special teams, isn't a great separator (a characteristic shared by many of our past WR corps) and lacks breakaway speed. He competed with a bunch of others to make the roster but just couldn't stand out. He was my fav of all of competitors and I'd rather take a shot with hi over many of the current WRs fighting for a spot currently .

It sounds like Cinc loves him with his attitude and work ethic. They had named him one of the team captains for last nights game.

Was he released from the PS at any point last season, or did we just not sign him to a Futures contract at the end of the year? If they weren’t seeing any sort of growth in practice they may have just not brought him back

He didn’t get any separation last night on his TD grabs, he basically had two great contested catches against backup DB’s. That’s not necessarily good

Admittedly, I only watched the first half last night. Hartman makes football unwatchable.

But I saw what i wanted to see. No injuries. Great pass protection. Excellent run blocking. Great run defense. Great tackling. Good QB pressure. Even the special teams were much improved.

The only thing that was lacking to me was pass defense. But the coverage was very good overall… their receivers just made some great plays… there were no communication breakdowns… and we weren’t playing our starting corners.

I came away from that game very pleased.

I'm hoping to see some analysis of individuals playeres on OL, DL & LB. I saw more from Cole Turner last night than Sinnott (did he play?)

Defense certainly looked like it had more potential than it did last season in Week 3 against last years Bengals. It's just preseason, but you can tell this unit has less of the issues that plagued last years unit.

I recall his name mentioned as the target of an errand pass from one of our poor #3 QB's
