Not really. It's textbook. He missed a sack and th QB gained a bunch of yards. It's exactly what I said

Yeah - I included that because it's a reasonable take. Bitching because the QB went on to scramble for a bunch of yds after a near sack and therefore Young is responsible for that isn't one.

There probably is no worse feeling in sports than that moment where “Oh yeah!” becomes “Oh no!”

Those almost plays are killers. Hopefully, Chase finishes the play when it counts.
 
Yeah, Young should have wrapped him up. But this is one play in a preseason game. He had very limited snaps, and if this is an example of what we can expect moving forwards he could be the gamewrecker we all wanted him to be.
This was one drive. Just one. And the miss really just proves how slim the margins are for a defense to get a sack on a professional and competent QB who isn’t a statue and can get rid of the ball quickly and decisively.
Given a whole game you could easily see Watson going down multiple times to Chase. You can’t expect a sack every play, any more than you can expect a QB to throw a TD every play. Too many variables at play and the skill of the opposing player has to be taken into account too.
 
My original comment is about that one drive.

And he messed up. All this drama is because people want to act like I attacked him personally or went overboard

Read my comment and let me know how I did anything else but judge his one missed tackle that led to a big gain.
 
The joint practices this week vs the Ravens will tell more about the state of the OL than Friday nights game.
 
Payne’s play on Young’s missed sack was just as responsible, if not more, for the yardage Watson rushed for.

At the end of the day, the play wasn't made, and Chase had a shot. 95% of that play was impressive but if you don't get the QB down it doesn't matter. It's no different than what our offense used to be. Move the ball between the 20s but can't finish. If you can't get the sack, none of the rest of it matters. Chase looked better in those 2 series than he has in the last 2 years, which is promising. Now he needs to make sure he finishes. Thankfully we don't play Deshaun Watson every week, but we do play Josh Allen, Jalen Hurts (x2), Justin Fields, Daniel Jones (x2), Geno Smith, Aaron Rodgers, and Dak Prescott (x2). Not all of them would get out of it every time, but of those 10 opponents, i'd imagine half the time those guys are able to escape that exact same scenario if all things are identical. That is where it's on Chase to make sure all things aren't identical.... and he finishes the play.

The play is actually something I saw Dexter Manley do on several occasions every season in Washington. Overaggressive and misses a tackle for loss and the offensive player gets wide for yardage off the end.

The key for Young is ensuring he comes up with enough of the positive plays Manley made vs. the pass, in forced turnovers and in short yardage down low to make these negative plays ones you look beyond.

I am far more concerned about what I saw out of Nick Gates and Andrew Wylie than about anything I saw on defense.

It's a good think Howell and Brissett are mobile because their legs could literally save their lives in 2023 :rolleyes:

I didn't understand taking a corner/safety again at #2 when we took Forbes in the first round when the center the Giants took looked to be the real deal inside for the future. We could have traded up in Round 2 and snagged him ahead of NY, perhaps at the cost of #3 pick Ricky Stromberg who doesn't appear close to being in the picture to get on the field here in Washington.

For a team with a 23/24 year old quarterback starting his first opening day game the play of the OL is the key to development.

No way we should have ended up with the castoff Gates as the instant starter in DC.

His injury history is one reason Washington didn't have a lot of competition to sign him.
 
Yeah - I think we all have the same concerns about what we saw the team do (or more accurately, no do) to shore up the OL, especially in the draft. I absolutely get that they loved Forbes, and that may prove to have been a great pick - TBD - but going back to the DB well with pick #2 instead of grabbing a surefire OL starter felt suspect at the time and I haven't seen anything to change my mind.

I think a bigger mitigating factor for Howell beyond his mobility will be making quick decisions. He doesn't appear, so far, to be inclined to hold onto the ball forever like we've seen with other recent QBs, but getting the ball out quickly is going to be crucial. The most concerning thing on the OL is that, we are already worried and we haven't had any injuries there. What are we going to do when guys start missing time - that is an even bigger worry?
 
My post is getting less and less bitching from the comments after. I watched it live and saw what I saw. Robinson looked good and pushed piles, Dotson was strong, Bates shouldn't have dropped that ball.

And Young missed a wide open sack.
 
No, Boone, there was no quarterback in the NFL that held the ball and looked like a statue set in cement like Carson Wentz in 2022 :devilish:
