Official Game Thread - Playoffs Week 1 - Commanders @ Buccaneers - SNF

Don't like us getting a flag happy crew.

The info there was pretty accurate - the Commanders D gets a lot of penalties at big, painful times; leading the league in 3rd down penalties. IF these refs' behaviors pan out, it would be nice to not see that in this game. That could help them. It's a lot of supposition though.

Interesting tidbit I just read that I didn't know. Kingsbury coached Texas Tech with Baker Mayfield as his QB, and chose to bench him in favor of P Maholmes. So, some were claiming there would be an extra incentive for Mayfield. I don't know that he would need it, but some athletes definitely use these types of things as fuel. I doubt it factors, but thought it was interesting.

Dare I think the officials are going to bury their whistles more than in the regular season.

Those are the stats I want to see. The league doesnt want endless penalties on their biggest games of the year. First round of the loffs... game will likely be called tight but I am optimistic Lattimore will get some leeway.... BSJ never will.

I'm worried about Luvu possibly not being available for this one. That would be a major blow to the D.

Getting a flag happy crew for the Lattimore vs Evans matchup is worrisome because I feel like it can be one of those situations where they allow them to set a precedent of allowing physical play for three quarters and then out of nowhere deciding in the fourth quarter to throw a flag for what they've already allowed a lot of.

For the game itself, I am thinking the offense is going to handle the blitz better, the O-line itself it might depend on their health, but I don't think Kliff is going to have Jayden sitting back in the pocket for very long if it appears they can't handle the pressure. I am really hoping C-Rod gets some more carries.

As far as the defense goes. I am worried. Just being honest. The run defense hasn't been that good all season (although sometimes they are able to bend not break in the redzone) I think a big part is going to be their ability to get to Baker Mayfield and actually finish all the would-be sacks that he was able to escape from in the first match up. I am not a huge believer in Baker Mayfield when taking on a good defense, however if he has all day to sit in the pocket and make the throws, he is capable.

All that said, I see this as a winnable game. Tampa Bay will be a tough game, but I don't view anything about this team that makes them an insurmountable task the way they might be if Evans was out there with BSJ or Davis covering him the entire game.

This is his first playoff game. I think they will have to drag him off the field.

And that is fine with me. He is the heart and soul of our defense and we need him to get early pressure and blow up the bakery.

Nice matchup break down here. Notable - we have the second worst pass blocking PFF grade over the regular season of any team in the playoffs. Offensive line upgrade needs to be a point of emphasis in the off-season.

Lets be reality... in the end Jayden is very likely going to have to use his legs to run our team to victory. We are not going to be able to stop Tampa's offense. Their line is good. Baker 2.0 is a PITA. Bucky's a stud but I bet White racks up more yards and kills us in the passing game. Lattimore HAS to be on his health game to shut down studly Mike Evans. Hopefully Otton is out. Sure there are other factors - we ALL know what happens in games is SO random and any prediction is a blind dart throw random guess - but if Jayden runs for 100+ that bodes well for us. While it points to no run game and no pass pro/receivers blanketed - I boldly predict the game comes down to his health and if he gets a hunge he is healthy. If he looks like he did vs Dallas, our goose may be cooked.

This is how games seem to go. 1st team drives down and scores easy peasy. Opposing fans are on tilt. But my over is looking good! Then it turns into a defensive struggle. Why do I ALWAYS bet the over, like an idiot? Then, the 2nd half is an aerial show / lots of scoring and it comes down to who has the ball last. Or, who commits the fewest turnovers, or capitalizes on the ones they do get. John Madden would say the game comes down to special teams, of course. In case that hits... in his memory.

I see today is a rest day for Lattimore... hmmm. I am surprised he needs rest, but Quinn's a tricky dude. It wouldn't surprise me if Latts gets tweaked in "pregame" and doesn't go. Its easy to make sure video is out there for Lattimore going half speed in drills in practice. Anything to gain an edge before kickoff is fine with me. The ultimate shutdown stunt for a corner if when he gets the WR ejected. There is a fair chance that happens!

Lattimore playing effectively is a huge factor in this game.

Yeah it's frustrating how the Commanders start most every game with the other team just marching down the field. The good news is they seem to adjust well as the game goes on but these slow starts are a problem. I'm pretty optimistic about the injuries, BassAss is practicing and unlike a hamstrick you can always tape an ankle. Just hope the Lattimore hammy holds up.

I didn't like them in this game, still don't. But I just watched ESPN (for what that's worth) and all 4 picked Washington.
