Official Game Day Thread: Redskins @ Texans

I'd give Gruden an F this week. What was that debacle at the end of the first half? Drive to at least try for a FG. If nothing happens, then nothing happens. At least give it a try. That was horrible and it sends a terrible message to the team.

Somehow that's always a Redskins tradition, no matter who the coach is.
We always have history of just throwing up the surrender flag, when we have the ball at the end of the first half.

I was really upset in the first half with the play calling. The only play that went down the field was a broken play when RG3 scrambled and hit Roberts on the sideline for what turned out to be an incomplete pass. The second half play calling seemed better, but still left a lot to be desired. Of course, when they finally do get a big play, butterfingers Paul fumbles it. But I really think the play calling needs to be better.
 
Bottom line: You know how many games you will win fumbling in the red zone, getting kicks blocked, and putting up 6 points?

Zero.

That's the only thing I know after watching today's game.
 
Brian Orakpo did a great job disguising himself as turf today...cause I didn't notice him on the field.

That's a great way to go about getting a new contract.
 
There are two things that have made me feel better after watching this game. My wife, but I won't do TMI, and watching the 49ers absolutely demolish the Cowboys.
 
Nothing else will make me happy after that cluster-mess.

Tackling your own player in the open field when ten or fifteen more yards was doable? Bleh...

I thought he was inactive. I never heard his name, nor saw him on the field.
 
frustration/anger has passed.

back into "it's a journey" mode.

Things that need improvement:

- pass pro...we all know that

- QB command of the game and execution. we all know that.

- pass defense. some may dispute this......but what I'm seeing is tighter coverage...not effective coverage. why is it on those 3rd and 8s our receivers come up short but the opposing team's doesn't? I'm not seeing a lot of plays on the ball. as in past years....seems like too much cushion. not sure what is going on...I just know that from preseason to the present it was rare to see the secondary make a play on the ball.

- ALF looked great today. his one step and go really is phenomenal. but damn it...he is becoming a liability at times catching/holding ontp the ball.

- the o-line, at times, continues to physically handled by bigger defenses. tis is simply something time and change will have to address.

- still no down-field passing game. that one I attribute to coaching/play-calling.

- STs? what the heck fellas. you keep costing the team in major ways.

- I recall thinking the first time I watched the punter doing his thing "man he lowers the ball a long ways to his foot rather than releasing it high". pundits were saying the block was due to Helu releasing early.

- red zone scoing remains a challenge.

uptrending:

- run game

- Roberts in return game AND as a receiver

- Robert controlling his tuck and run instincts.

- DJackson and Pierre picked up where they left off last season. they looked good in the highly bounded passing game.

- didn't hear CLowney's name much today until he left the game. Check for Trent.

- the defense played a decent game.....with the obvious exception or two.

We can beat Jacksonville. Down field passing game ought to finally make an appearance.

I'd like to see Robert "own" the game.....be in command like a Brady or Manning. His body language doesn't show that right now.

Gruden was definitely coaching scared in the first half. We need to stop throwinh the ball to Jackson at the LOS. Like right now. Never do that again.

The playcalling did seem to get better in the second half, but then we started fumbling the ball all over the place.

Just so many things didnt go right its tough to pick out one to blame for this loss.

That's not bad play-calling.
In fact, it's a reflection of excellent play-calling.
We HAD to go for those short, dink and dunk passes, because that's the only type of pass the RG3 had any chance of completing, with the time he was given in the so-called pocket.
If we attempted more longer passes, we would have seen double the amount of sacks, or more.
Gruden did an excellent job of adjusting the pass play-calling, based on the fact that our O-line is a sieve.
I only wish he called more runs.

Actually it made more sense than anything. When nothing else is working, then you find a way, any kind of way, to get the ball to your fastest, most explosive playmaker. And when your QB is getting steamrolled every play, then the WR screen is apparently the only method to get it to your playmaker.
At that point, the team's only hope seemed to be that Jackson would eventually break one open.

maybe! it's all about setting up plays. I thought Gruden called an average game today.
 
Alfred Morris averaged 6.5 yards per on 14 carries. Gruden is going to wish he called more running plays when he watches the film.
 
Just an fyi for all those in Game Chat today - I have made some changes in how the embedded chatroom at the top of the Home Page is built. Today's version was built using an ad placement manager we use for all kinds of things. I don't know if maybe running it via that software created the database errors we had today, or whether it's just too big a strain on our server to have the chatroom mirrored on our home page. We'll try the new straight html set up next Sunday and I'll reevaluate then. Hopefully everyone had a good time regardless (beyond the game itself that is).

Oh I know why we did it. It was scared play-calling. Jackson is fast but he cant juke. He spends way too much time dancing around and making no yards. Throw those balls to Garcon.
 
I was on a camping trip this weekend so I didnt get to watch the game, but I listened on the radio (When the broadcast wasnt messed up)

My take was maybe skewed because of the lack of visual.

I thought they sounded like they were playing pretty decent, especially on D. That made me very happy.

O, while slow to get started seemed nearly electric at times, especially when the run game was hot.

As usual, it was the few heartaches and blunders that went and ruined an otherwise OK thing.

I think I can live with that.
