Incredible how far Matt Barkley has fallen from a couple of years ago when likely would've been a top 5 pick.

the receiving corps sputtered when Garcon was out. sleepy is what...a one year deal? Logan is nice, but doesn't scare any defenses. my guess is that they had another TE in mind but he went in the 3rd. they need more tools around Robert. if Paul steps up, then yea, I question the pick also. but so far......it hasn't happened. this guy, it would seem, brings a dimension similar to Davis - a threat LBs cannot stay with. he's not here to block - here's here to catch passes and play STs.

Paulsen WAS always wide open last season. If this guy gets the ball like he did... YAC seems inevitable.

yup. TE nakes a lot of sense - especially with wr run early/mid 3rd round. I'll confess I thought it would be a different profile however (bigger and faster).

in a different department...wilson resigned today at a much lower cap number. if it ends up he and hall at the dbs...amersen can slide over to safety. or hall can play safety - that's been talked about the last yr or so. either way...the team has more ball hawkers on the field.

Being Negative? Absolutely. Safety, Linebacker, another corner, meh... TE.

At this point, I'd rather have them play the percentages than try to "patch up pot holes with sand", so to speak.

If he is the next Ryan leaf then yes but if he is 3/4 the Qb that Rogers is in Gb he will get plenty of money

but remember the ole saying: one in the hand = two in the bush.

there was an irrational push for QBs last draft. Barkley would certainly have gone in the 1st rnd.

from a talent pov...you're probably right. this may work out better for him.

From what I here is his style of play is very similar to Halls high risk high reward which isn't a bad thing

Mid-round DBs and LBs are either depth or teamers first. I doubt any rookie DB can go through a season without growing pains nor will there be a wow LB that will not look a little lost at first.

Quite honestly, I don't think that any of us should be surprised in the way that Shanahan and Allen have approached the middle rounds of the draft this year. They've quite often picked players since arriving here that seem to be a better fit system-wise, as opposed to simply taking guys still available that are ranked higher on everyone's sacred "board." How many times have there been o-linemen (a position of very high perceived need) in recent years still there for the taking for instance, who we thought wouldn't be, that they've repeatedly overlooked and instead taken a player at a more skilled position?

From what I could tell, our corners don't often get right up in the faces of opposing wideouts. Amerson from all reports seems to be a guy who excels more effectively in zones and off-man coverage. That seems to play into what we've seen our corners do here recently. With Reed, I think you potentially get a guy who is versatile and certainly can fit into some of the creative formations that Kyle can line him up in. Again, offensive system-wise, sounds like a match. At the same time, maybe the F.O.'s line of thinking was that Reed might be able to make a more immediate impact on the field (considering where we might be at TE a year or two from now) than a project at defensive back would.

All in all, I'll give the F.O. credit for sticking to their guns in terms of their approach to the draft. It's been consistent from Day 1 - they are going to take players that increased the overall talent level of the roster and that are a fit with how they want to scheme and play football, instead of taking players that simply fill needs. To this point, this approach has assured us as fans of a few things: Shock, second-guessing, and some disappointment on draft day, but we've seen it start coming full circle and paying dividends on the football field thankfully. The depth and overall talent level on this team is much improved since Allen/Shanahan arrived, that can't be denied.

I'd rather have a plan as opposed to throwing random darts at a board on draft day.

I can't help but wonder if the pick of a TE might be more over concern about Sleepy's recovery...

It could have something to do with Fred's recovery, but I spent a couple of hours last night looking at Reed and came to the conclusion that this could be a huge steal. He can play close to the line, line up at WR, line up at H-back, etc. He could really cause matchup problems for defenses now and far into the future.

Time will tell, but we could be very happy with this pick from the time training camp opens.

As for Fred. He could be gone sooner rather than later. Not sure if we could get anything in a trade, but that is too early to speculate imho.

putting aside what many here feel about Sleepy...IMO...he's a major part of the scheme.

- reports on Redskin Nation claim his recovery is going well

- he has speed that most TEs just don't have

- he has been used very effectively in the past

- he compensates for a wideout corps that really only has one bona fide threat. now...maybe Morgan gets over his injury issues and Hank learns to hold onto the ball....Robinson more or less disappeared last part of the season...until then.....I think Sleepy is a big part of the whole attack

I suspect Reed will be Sleepy's replacement in 2014; in 13, I think Freddy gets most of the snaps, and Reed is allowed to develop slowly, with the thought that in 14, the job is his.

Unless of course, Sleepy's rehab is not going well. Then it's time play, youngin'!

The TE pick is definitely a head-scratcher for me.

However, this front office, through a few years of VERY good drafting, has earned the benefit of the doubt. If they like him I like him.

Kid sounds like a Lo Alexander on offense. We could do worse.

I didn't like either pick at first. but they're both growing on me. there's some risk taking going on - but the upside is good.

Otherwise i'm for loading up on anything on D. Preferably LB and NT's...possibly a center too.

I'll consider the 4th round a huge success if we can manage to get Phillip Thomas or Reid Fragel. I'd also be OK with David Bakhtiari in the 5th. If we somehow manage to get Thomas and one of the other two I'll be, well, all like...
