Official 2014 Pre-Season Man Crush Thread

To be honest, I kind of have a man crush on ALL our picks. What I really like about the draft this year is that all these guys seem to be committed to doing whatever it takes to succeed. They're quality people who are willing to put in the work. I also like that they seem on the whole to be more than just what's on paper. Some of them may not be the stars that people like to pick up...but they do strike me as core guys....players that fill certain roles and don't necessarily stand out individually, but collectively help the team succeed. I like that they are coming in to compete in their respective positions....but also that many (as applicable) are not just willing, but excited to contribute on special teams - if that's what's asked of them. I remember Joe Theisman being wiling to do ANYTHING to get on the field and contribute. He was odd man out with Sonny and Kilmer ahead of him....so, he returned punts. It's that kind of attitude and desire that will help this Redskin team win. No, many "experts" may not grade this draft all that highly....on the surface....but, I believe it was a very successful draft. Guys who haven't played special teams in the past may find themselves on the outside looking in while the new guys are able to contribute in many ways.

I'm very excited....
 
I'm still man-crushing on Mr. Griffin.

To me, this Redskins team is an either/or.

Either Robert is back to being Robert, and the magic we saw starting to happen in the second half of 2012 was just the launch pad, making all the new additions booster rockets ...

OR Robert was a shooting star and will ultimately prove to just be another guy, in which case all the new additions are what new additions to ANY team without a franchise QB are ... a bunch of guys waiting on a franchise QB. A better one than before after this draft, yes, but still not a group able to attain escape velocity.

So there.
 
Sorry but we need to cut the umbilical cord with Moss. He's 35 and a luxury for a team trying to rebound from 3-13.

If there was no Jackson or Roberts I could see keeping him for experience but Garçon, Jackson and Roberts are all 26-28 year old veteran players.

That fourth receiver spot needs to go to a younger, developmental player who can help us on ST right away and offense down the road.

Agreed. Both Texas and Cleveland are due to learn that this year on opposite ends of the success spectrum. Browns fans might be more desparate for sucess than we are.
 
Well I don't think we gain much from having a 35 year old guy ride the bench.
 
Ryan Grant will turn out to be our biggest triumph from this draft. When this thread started, I dug up every clip I could find on all of these guys. He will be one of those guys where 31 other teams wonder how the hell he was overlooked by so many teams.
 
I'm all for the 'age is just a number' thing, but what I saw last year from Santana Moss was a guy who'd lost a full step AND developed the WR version of the yips--dropped balls. For a guy whose NFL success was earned by and dependent on his burst and ability to track and catch the ball, those two diminishments seems a pretty clear signal that it is time for the Redskins to move on.

The new Redskins offense is being built for speed and precision; it's hard to envision Moss fitting into that.

No team has been more loyal to its veterans than the Skins over the years, but too often it's been to their detriment. Every great player's day finally comes.

Injuries are the wild card, and realistic likelihood, that many people seem to overlook.

If a couple of our Top receivers go down to injury, wouldn't you prefer to have the veteran insurance that Moss provides, rather than the remaining young players who are unproven ?

We're only a season apart from Garcon missing nearly an entire season, simply from a measly toe injury.
What if both him and Jackson get hurt around the same time ?
Not really a far-reaching scenario.
 
as far as Im concerned there are only 2 WRs on this team that have a spot on this roster above Moss.

Hank is hurt and not dependable
Robinson is a one trick pony who stalled out of the gates last year
the kid from from AZ gets to compete for 3rd WR with Moss

he has proven time and time again that he can step up and do what is asked. Yes, he had the drops and the "spins" last year but who wasn't messing up? Morris had a bad case of fumbles early in the season, Reed has concussion issues, etc, etc. He has earned the right to go in to camp as the #3 and lose the spot before its taken from him.

Roberts is a lock for #3. Moss is fighting for the 4th spot, which he may not get if Grant can run routes as well as reported.

a disgruntled WR who thought he was a #2 and went to the media already is not exactly screaming motivated or lock.

but that is just my take on it.
 
If Roberts whined about not being #2, I shudder to think what his reaction will be if he has to share time with Grant @ #3.
Before some flip out - if they did keep Moss, he's not gonna see another 80 targets again. Ever. Not hate, just math.
 
Moss has lost a step or three over the past few seasons. If the athletic Roberts (who is in the prime of his career) can't beat him out, I'd be extremely shocked. I could easily see Gruden go with Grant and Hoffman over Moss as well, since they are "his guys."

No disrespect to Santana, but his days are numbered. He's just not big and strong enough to last in the league like Boldin.

I think Roberts will turn heads in camp, and beat out Grant.

Maybe that's why they spent a mid-round pick on Grant, when we seemed to have other pressing needs at that moment in time, and while already looking solid at WR : perhaps the coaches saw something in the offseason that made them doubt Roberts.

You could say the same thing about Moss. Maybe he's lost yet another step. :)

Perhaps they counted on Santana to fill the WR4 spot, and ended up drafting Grant when it was clear he didn't have much left in the tank?
