NFL.com: Brock Purdy Signs 5 Year, $265 Million Extension.

He will make more per week now than he did for the entirety of his previous contract. Not too shabby. 😎

He earned $2.6 million total over his first three NFL seasons, making him the NFL's 76th-highest-paid quarterback over that span, according to Roster Management System. His new contract has an average salary of $53 million, meaning he will get paid more per week under his new deal ($2.9 million) than he did over the first three years of his career combined.’

What choice did the Niners have? He was my favorite non-Washington player in the league, how can you not root for Mr Irrelevent to throw TD passes? But I do think the magic is gone but like the Jags and Lawrence they really didn't have a choice but to pay market rates or start over.

Maybe. I just don’t think he’s going to elevate non-elite talent around him. He’s good. He’s a clear starter in rge league.

But I don’t think he’s going to elevate players, so they need to have elite talent around him. And I don’t know the talent is elite anymore.

Yep. He was no doubt a product of his surrounding and obviously played well. Now it's a different story but again what choice did they have?

I would say they should have traded him to the Jets who are stupid enough to part with multiple firsts to pay him top dollar. Or maybe the Steelers where he might be really good and let somebody else pay him a ton of money. The Giants also would have been stupid enough to trade for him and then sign him to a mega contract.

Then trade for Cousins for a year or two who knows the system while you take shots at the next guy in the draft.

I just would not have been the team to give him a big money deal.

I can see this approach. But the draft is a crap shoot and this guy has proven he can play in the league at a fairly high level. And I'm not convinced he would have fetched multiple 1sts., not after his recent play. And prior to that the Niners would have had no reason to trade a QB who was playing well.

I think the Jets and/or Giants would have been willing to give up at least a first and a second, maybe 2 firsts. Regardless, something of use.

Remember Purdy was Mr. Irrelevant. If you get assets, you just keeping shots at the QB until you find one. Which is why I pair that with a trade for Cousins, where you would give up significantly less than what you got for Purdy. If I'm the 9ers, I'm letting some other team give an above average QB a top 5-10 QB deal. Let the stupid teams continue to be stupid. (We were one for SO long. They are easy to recognize.)

Then pick 2 QBs a year until Kyle finds one who can play.

And I think Kirk could still play in Kyle's system well enough to keep that ship afloat while they search for the next QB and continue to add talent.

I dunno. I just think the fastest way to the bottom is paying top money for an average QB.

49ers supposedly have the easiest schedule. If they don't win 11+ games this deal is going to look bad.

Shanahan should know better than to overpay a rando to run his offense so maybe there is a chance that he's better than expected.

He's good, but he's also running the offense that made Gorappolo and even Darnold on the Vikings look good.

Kyle is one of sharpest offensive minds in the game, only Andy Reid is in the conversation. I still laugh at the end of the Shanny era when Washington fans wanted to blame Kyle, called him a coach's son who should not have the job. I laughed at them then and I laugh at them now, the problem here was never Kyle Shannahan.
