Next Day Thread: Dirty Work, Dirty Bird

I was 17 in 1991. I think since Dan bought the team we have had a winning record all season since week 3 like we have this year only in 1999. (Ironically that team started with a loss then 4 wins and another loss to start 4-2 as well)

It is so nice to have a team that has been a winner all season, the 5-6 in a row or we won’t go teams of 05, 07 and 12 have never felt this good.

I am happiest for my son 16 and nephew 21 who root for the Skins because I did. We live near BWI and I told them they should root for the Ravens because Dan was gonna outlive us all and this team was never going anywhere. I truly felt like the football gods were punishing me for something I did.

Unlike 2005, 2007 and 2015 this feels different. This is the hardest working team we have seen this millennium. While I am happy I am happier for the younger fans. I got to see Super Bowl wins and that is something all fans should get to experience.

Great write up.

What a crazy season, you really have to watch the entire game because they can come back at any time. Can’t believe they are in the playoffs what a great job by the organization. Very excited to see what they do in the offseason but we’ll have time to get to that later.

JD wow what a pick, he is amazing single handily winning games. He looks like he has it and will be good for a long while but still have ptsd from RGIII so we’ll see. It’s actually fun to watch this team again and have hope for the first time in a long time.

Also glad to find the forum and all the ES folks that made it here, love the gameday chat too!

Yup, what a time to be alive! I was 11 yrs old in 1991, and wearing my Redskins hoodie proudly in elementary!! Hell of win, and I also think Dieter came in, blocked well and held his ground replacing Biadasz.... unlike in the Saints game!! Hail to victory Monday!!

I was like Randy Quaid's character in Major League 2 going into the season. The long time fan that was so worn down, he couldn't be optimistic. Always waiting for the other shoe to drop. JD5 has changed that. Now I know that if we get put the ball in his hands with the game on the line, we have a good chance to win. I haven't felt like this in ages. I didn't realize how spoiled I was as a 12 year old watching his team win their 3rd Super Bowl in less than a decade in January of 1992. Not until the near quarter century of misery under the owner who shall not be named. It feels good man. It feels damn good. HTTR

What a game. Frustrating? Yes! Nerve wracking? Definitely. Like last week (drop on 3rd down following the late INT), needed an untimely missed play (the FG) to give JD5 one more opportunity to show his magic. I honestly believed he would do it on the last drive in regulation. That he didn't, for once, left me feeling a bit stunned and disappointed that his supporting cast let him down. In previous years I wouldn't have had any faith at all and just chalked it up to "same old".

I've always balked a bit at owners getting primary credit (e.g. the first to lift the lombardi trophy) as it is the players that ultimately put in the hard work. However, I cannot begrudge Josh Harris getting the game ball last night. One season to get to 11 wins and with a game in hand is remarkable and a testament to the turnaround he has overseen.

The two teams picking 2nd and 3rd in this year's draft both finished with 4 wins. One will be doing well to make it to 4 wins again this season, the other has their place in the playoffs locked in. That's a stark contrast. What's exciting is that there is a lot of opportunities to make the team better, but it starts with the play of Daniels and the environment around him has been conducive to bringing that out of him right from the beginning. That's where Harris comes in.

Stoked on a playoff lock! but man... we have issues....
1. Something is off with Robinson .. he is just not running the way he did in the beginning of the season. Coaches see is too... as we saw a lot more of Mcnickols and Rodriguez (they should sit Robinson next week, maybe help him get healthy)
2. D is STRUGGLING, little to no qb pressure up front and our corners, as it stands, are terrible. How Davis still has a job is perplexing and concerning
3. We need a complementary WR to Terry badly.. Any teams in the playoffs (other than Det) can take Terry out of the game and now we rely on a bunch of 3rd stringers to move the ball.. thats going to be rough.

Taking above in to consideration.. Atl was a bad matchup for us. Great O line and Great RBs.. is this teams D kryptonite. A win is a win is a win.

Last night was beautiful and very special to me.

When it was over, I was a mess - teary-eyed with happiness and joy.

I instantly thought of some of the people on this very board. In particular, Boone, SilentThreat, Neophyte, and Om. In the infancy stages of the dawn of the BGO Blind Pig podcast, it was the brotherhood of these gentlemen that kept me hanging on. I will fully admit that I was worn, tired, and on the brink of cutting the cord with this franchise as a result of the torture our previous owner put us through. Had it not been for these guys and the therapy they provided meeting with them each week, I would have probably been long gone and not been able to experience this amazing moment in this franchise's history. The above mentioned guys are maybe the most passionate fans I know and their loyalty deserves the reward this season has brought. Cheers, boys.

I also thought of my very own children, Sam and Sebastien. Sebastien identifies as a Redskins fan, but he is more wrapped up in hockey and the Pittsburgh Penguins. My oldest, Sam (13), is basically a carbon copy of me though. He lives and breathes the sport and digests as much content as possible. He is basically hooked for life and talks about football 24/7. My one regret last night was that I never ever forced this franchise upon him and allowed him to gravitate towards his own team - honestly, it was hard for me to do that as he grew up, given the state and health of the franchise under Snyder. How great would it have been to celebrate that OT moment with him? Instead, I was fist pumping the air, jumping all over the place, waking up the dog, etc, but we didn't celebrate 11 wins and playoffs together. I know deep down inside, he sat there on the edge of his seat and secretly wanted them to win. That's okay for now, but part of me always wanted him to be my partner in crime in this journey. Who knows, maybe Mahomes will pull an Andrew Luck and decide to retire early one day and Sam will get BGO'd...

We should go for every 4th down that's 5 or less inside the opposing 40 unless its super late and a FG is all we need to win.

JD's mobility makes it basically automatic.
To take it a step further thats 86%...the stupid ass philly tush push is 76% on the season. That's an insane comparison.

Rodriguez had five carries averaging 3.2 ypc.
McNichols had one carry for five yards.

Six carries for our other running backs is not unusual.

Maybe Robinson's a little beat up, and maybe they rest him in Dallas I don't know, but regardless, he averaged 4.6 a carry and considering the blocking on some of his carries recently, I dont see anything to be alarmed about.

Jayden Daniels 16 game sample size of a season is very likely the greatest statistical season for any quarterback in Redskin Team Commander history.
I got to thinking about this. And I decided to do a little digging. I'm not sure I agree or disagree, to be honest.

Here are the other season (in order) which I think would merit comparison:
1. Kirk Cousins 2016. Summary: 4,917 yards, 25 TDs, 12 INT, 8.5 Yards Per Attempt, 67% completion percentage, passer rating 97.2, QBR 66.5. 96 yards rushing and 4 rushing TDs. 23 sacks for 190 yards
2. Robert Griffin III 2012. Summary: 3200 yards, 20 TD, 5 INT, 8.1 Yards Per Attempt, 65.6% completion percentage, passer rating 102.4, QBR 69.4. 815 yards rushing, 7 rushing TDs. 30 sacks for 217 yards
3. Sonny Jurgensen, 1967. Summary: 3747 yards, 31 TDs, 16 INTs, 7.4 Yards Per Attempt, 56.7 completion percentage, passer rating 87.3 (QBR not available). 46 rush yards, 2 rushing TDs. 19 sacks for 157 yards.
4. Mark Rypien, 1991. Summary: 3564 yards, 28 TDs, 11 INT, 8.5 Yards Per Attempt, 59.1% completion percentage, passer rating 97.9, (QBR not available). 50 rushing yards, 2 rushing TDs. 7(!!!!) sacks for 59 yards
5. Joe Theismann, 1983. Summary: 3714 yards, 29 TD, 11 INT, 8.1 Yards Per Attempt, 60.1% completion percentage, passer rating 97, (QBR not available). 234 yards rushing, 1 TD. 34 sacks for 242 yards.

** I forgot one which I'm not going to add, because I don't have time. But Brad Johnson's 4000 yard 1999 season was very, very good also. It was the first 4000 yard season for a Washington QB. But I wouldn't put as good as Jayden's. It's also oddly between the "modern" passing NFL and the legacy guys.

Comparison:
Jayden Daniels 2024 through 16 games* Though he only played 1 series in one of the games:
3530 Yards, 25 TD, 9 INT, 7.5 Yards Per Attempt, 69.4 Completion Percentage, passer rating 101.2, QBR 72.3. 864 rush yards, 6 rushing TDs. 43 sacks for 220 yards.

If you just go by QBR, (which I wouldn't, but it is the best of the all encompassing metrics, Daniels has had the best statistical season where there is a QBR.

It's hard to compare generations. Sonny, Mark and Joe were playing a very different game, where DBs were allowed to mug receivers down the field, the game was much more of a run-first oriented game, there were just different rules. Passes were generally more down field, completion percentages were lower, you expected more INTs because of more risk. You could argue Sonny's 1967 season was the most impressive in franchise history, given the game he was playing. Also, my guy is in the HOF for a reason.

Mark Rypien's 1991 season could probably have been better if it needed to be. But it didn't. They were so far ahead in so many games, they ran a version of the riggo drill for entire second halves. And the fact Rypien was sacked 7 times in a season was bananas. And he had the mobility of a cement truck going up hill. That team was loaded. Rypien was the perfect conductor for that particular orchestra.

Joe Theismann's 1983 season is somewhat similar to Rypien's 1991 season. Both are outstanding. Both ended with trips to the Superbowl. (Sadly, the 1983 trip ended in tears). The 1983 team was also loaded.

I'm just going to go ahead and toss those three seasons out and say they just aren't comparable. I think of that era, statistically, Sonny's is the most impressive. But you just can't compare something from 1967 to 2024.

Now, if you compare the 3 "modern" seasons, Jayden's 2024, Kirk's 2016 and Griffin's 2012, I dunno. I think I would probably make an argument Jayden's season is the best of the three. But that Kirk 5,000 yard combined passing and rushing was pretty impressive statistically. The reason it's somewhat forgotten is the defense was SO bad it kept giving up 3rd and longs, and they finished with one of the most disappointing losses in franchise history, thanks to a bad game by Kirk and also because Jay is a fool and Joe Barry was a disaster as a DC, and some combination of Dan/Bruce built a crap defense. (Though, I still to this day believe a better coaching staff could have gotten that group of defensive players to at least look competent. Unlike Joe Barry and his moronic stooges who actually made them worse.) They had a 13 win offense with Kirk, McVay and company and a 4 win defense and ended up winning 8 games.

I think it's undeniable Jayden's season is better than Griffin's. More yards, more TDs, higher completion percentage, Also, both played essentially 15 games, so at the moment, it's an equal comparison. Also throw in100% less drama/diva effect. Jayden's season is better.

I think the only modern season I'd say is comparable is Kirk's. And they're just so different. So they're hard to compare. I'd probably take Jayden's, statistically. But it's super close.

Also interesting, of the modern seasons, both Griffin and Jayden were in their rookie years, Kirk was in his second year starting. Of the legacy seasons, Sonny, Mark and Joe were all crusty veterans by the time they put up those numbers.

For the season:
Robinson is averaging 4.3
Mcnickls 4.7
Rodrigues 4.9

If you actually watched the game.. Robinson would mostly be tackled by the first tackler.. while Rodriguez consistently broke tackles and got extra yards. Rob also got blown up by blitzing LBs a couple of times.. not a great showing.
Oline didnt do RBs any favors.. but the expectation for Robinson based on his previous play should be higher... i'd like to see more Rodriguez going forward.

Big issues...I'm not sure how to explain how this defense looked against a very average offense. If Penix had a little more accuracy or composure (Collinsworth kept praising his poise, but I think some of his misses were due to being caught up in the moment), that game might have been so out of hand that Atlanta could have let Robinson and Allgier pound the ball all 4th quarter. They had to have left 17 points on the field with just pretty basic overthrows of open WRs.

Here's the thing though...a great QB can cover up for a lot of big issues.

I was 3 in 1991...

Went with cousin who was a falcons fan. He wasn't even born yet.

He didn't like losing, but man, that moment and reality wasn't lost on us...talked about on metro home

I gotta say it was a night of coming to terms in both good and bad ways.
First, the good, knowing at the half being down 10 that the game was not over. It's been since 2012 that I could have that feeling, knowing that the offense could make up that difference.
Second, the bad, knowing that we still make too many mistakes and need to be more disciplined, the OZ TD called back on the holding penalty would have essentially iced it. Also, knowing that our defense either needs Lattimore back soon or the pass rush has to find a way to get home and somebody tape Fowler's arms down so he doesn't even brush the helmet of opposing QB's.

I wonder how much the wind played into that. From what I remember, he took the one deep shot and that was it. I wonder if the coaches wanted him to just keep it short and not try to make throws where the wind could affect it. I don’t know that, but I did wonder that during the fame.
I also think he was under a LOT of pressure, so short passes.

When he fumbled and got "coached", he overemphasized ball protection (changes his natural grip and tuck) to protect the ball. That's good for security but it costs you in speed and agility..you hunkered down in protect mode with no extension. It's like trying to box with your muscles constantly flexed..it slows you down. The two fumbles were an anomaly. They should run him against Dallas where the risks are low and get him back his confidence. He is NOT a fumbler..don't coach him like he is one.
