I don't like either of those.

I wanted a name. I just knew I wasn't going to like any name. It's the same as the Washington Football Team, just somewhat easier to say.

I think they could have kept the logo with the Commanders if they wanted to. But I think they were SO over having the Native American discussion, they were going to get rid of everything. And on that point, at that time, I don't blame them.

In hindsight though, how would you feel if we had basically forgone an official nickname, but kept the logo, the uniforms, and Native American imagery?

This would have allowed for people to use the old nickname 'skins' in an unofficial capacity.

The thing is though…and I hate to have to keep pointing this out but it’s important to note. In 2020 we could not “keep” the logo. Maybe in 2013 we could have, in 2016 maybe…but NOT in 2020. If we are going to have an honest discussion on this issue we must acknowledge that the situation had become untenable at that time for the logo as well as the name.

I generally just say Commanders or Washington.

My biggest pet peeve is when people say it's too long. It's three syllables. How lazy are people??

I never really considered this as an option because it was never an option.

I don't think I would like it, but I guess it would have been fine.

I actually take back a little bit of what I said earlier: in my absolute ideal situation, which was never going to happen because of small minded morons, I would have worked with the Native American community, and a specific tribe, maybe the tribe that designed the logo, and become the name of a specific tribe with their blessing and support. Kindof like the Seminoles and Florida State, though I know the relationship there has been strained at times.

There was nothing stopping the team from doing that for years. It would have kept the Native American feel, it would have been good for whatever community they partnered with, I think it would have been acceptable to most fans because they could have kept the exact same team colors and imagery.

Different but similar.

I would have supported that. And if the team worked really well with the tribe, it could have really been beneficial for everybody.

But I don't think it was ever considered.

In 2020 you might be right. But I'm not sure.

Also, they should have had a contingency plan in case something blew up, which they didn't. And if they had a contingency plan, that plan could have included keeping the logo because ground work was done in order for it to happen.

If the contingency plan was get up with the Wetzel family and state loudly "we're keeping the logo, we're changing the name" I think it MIGHT have worked. Maybe not. 2020 was wild.

I’ve said it before and I will say it again Snyder behaved like an emotional fan over this issue throughout his entire ownership tenure, instead of handling it the way a rational and logical businessman should have. I also say that as an emotional fan who wanted him to keep the name and logo for many years, but I didn’t own the team and it wasn’t my business to protect.

And this is basically the heart of the entire issue. Snyder‘s inability to read the tea leaves and see which way the wind was blowing. We are fans who did not own the team. He was a supposed fan who did own the team. He failed in his responsibility to protect the brand when there was still something to protect. Hindsight is 20/20 but the fact is every time they tried to close the door on this issue it would not go away. It was never going to go away. It could’ve been managed better for certain. I’ve said before… I believe if we had just bit the bullet and changed the name to Washington Warriors in 2013 and kept the logo, maybe it never comes to a head in the same way.

I kindof wish they would have found out how to do something related to George Washington as a play on the city name. But nothing really fit. Minute Men is just a mouthful. Colonials has 4 syllables. The Washington George's? chuckle.

What shocked me at the time…and still does to some extent was how it was so “matter-of-fact” the day of. The sense I got was that they knew it wasn’t going to land. Maybe it wasn’t even their first choice… but maybe they didn’t really HAVE a choice? I tend to be a bit of an apologist for the organization sometimes, but even I can acknowledge the rollout was pretty much a disaster.

I did have fun with my wife and kid at the announcement party at the stadium, so there’s that nice memory at least.

For those saying that the logo wasn't workable in 2020, I think there is some truth to that... but idiot Snyder never even spoke with the Wetzel family or the Blackfoot tribe that he was associated with. Had he done that, I truly believe they could have separated the perceived issue from the logo... but again... Dan (and Wright) are incompetent morons

I mean, that really depends if you spell out Forty-Niners.

I get that they go by the 9ers. But if you say the whole name, it's longer. Or spell it.

Jaguars, now that's interesting. Technically it has 3 syllables also. However, if you say if fast, it sounds like one syllable. Again, they do have a nice nickname, Jags.

Patriots. Also three Syllables. But have the Pats.

I looked it up to make sure. Washington’s official title during the Revolutionary War was Commander-in-Chief of the Continental Army.
