(New Poll) The Washington Commanders Brand 2.0: Beer Drinkers and Hail Raisers

How do you feel about the Commanders Brand 2.0?

  • Vastly improved, if this is THE brand moving forward I’m satisfied.

  • I like the direction, but I still feel more to do. I will/have specified in thread.

  • I don’t like this new direction. I didn’t like the old either. They can’t make this work for me.

I don’t see why the Wetzel logo can’t work with the name Commanders.

Some have said a spear doesn’t work with Commanders…but “Two Guns” would work with Commanders?

Not trying to be argumentative, but that I really don’t understand.

It's called wishcasting.

It’s a little bit of a stretch for sure, but Native American war chiefs like Tecumseh, Geronimo, and Crazy Horse were commanders in some sense.

The spear is easier to see working. Commander connects to POTUS, Washington the man, the city of Washington, and the military. The neoclassical themes fit that context well (consider the architecture of the city and Roman expressions like e pluribus unum). Likewise with military themes, even the Great Seal of the US has arrows. Really there are good branding possibilities here without changing the name.

For sure, most of us want to preserve the Redskins heritage as much as possible, and this involves a lot of wishful thinking.

The old name is not coming back, and I doubt the Wetzel logo does either, but it is possible we could see it as a throwback.

I do think the team is doing their best to connect to the past given the circumstances, and I’m glad they are.

In my mind Commander was never adequately defined, and therefore, that’s the problem. At this point, if you still have to define it or explain it…whelp, that’s not good.

Maybe they haven’t jumped in with both feet because they don’t want to limited any opportunity to change it. Maybe they were hoping the hullabaloo would die down? Who knows?

But I will say that the old logo on the helmet without changing the name strikes me as silly.

It is probably pareidolia, but I see it too, looks like the reflection of a Redskins helmet in his glasses.

Somebody said that would mean another name change too, which isn’t happening, but I don’t see why the Wetzel logo can’t work with the name Commanders. I doubt it happens, but I would love to see it, even as a throwback.

That pipe dream aside, I do think we’re going back to our old look and brand as much as possible, which is great.

I think the fit between Commanders and the old logo is clunky... no native american tribe would have used that language, so it feels mismatched... I could easily see them use the old logo on their alternates...

Use one of the classic skins uniforms with the Wetzel logo, replace Redskins with Washington.... add a tribal patch on the shoulder honoring the Blackfoot tribe (get their permission).... call them the "Blackfoot Uniforms" or something like that

Roman military history is rife with the use of the term/title commander though they appear in Latin.

This kind of recalls those photos of Jason Wright teasing us with glimpses of the (then) new uniforms.

Thought we'd heard the last of that name...his name reminds me of this:

If we are stuck with Commies, I'd be in favor of their two main unis clearly branding with roman legion "style"... maybe with a Roman spear somewhere.

Then you have a 3rd throwback that is full native American... basically everything but the old name.

Maybe the team will go in a slightly different direction. Have a portrait of a greco-roman man's face wearing plumed helmet. I bet it would make people angry with how tantalizingly close it is, but I could probably jam with it better than the taco holder.

I agree.

That said, I don’t care.

I wouldn’t give a damn if we had to twist ourselves into knots to try and justify why it made sense.

Throw the damn old logo on there and let’s roll.

Important: even with all the amature investigative work on the glasses, I don’t think the logo is coming back now. So I won’t be disappointed if it doesn’t.

But I’ll be thrilled if it did.

I’m not sure if he’s still around, but I think Califan007 had quite a bit of experience with looking at details of images. Unless I’m missing-remembering.

If we are stuck with Commies, I'd rather they go all out and have a pregame entrance like this with #5 on the poster...

Think it’s very likely that there’s something in the box, which isn’t the actual helmet or uniform, that has the old logo on it. Some sort of memo on a sheet of paper, or something. Introducing the concept of the new uniform, how it’s an attempt to honor the past while moving into the future, etc. And on it, the old logo.

Wouldn’t be surprised if it’s something like that. Meaning, people are seeing the reflection they think they are (I see it too), but don’t have the context.

Looks like two helmets, both facing to the right, but at slightly different angles.

Certainly possible though. I just wonder whether they would have needed something like that in the box, when the players are seeing the uniforms for the first time.

Definitely the most likely scenario.

The other reasonable option is the Russians hacked the commanders social media and placed this image as a signal to a 3rd generation sleeper cell activating them on their multi-generational mission to discover the secret formula for New Coke.

I mean, it’s either one of those two extremely likely scenarios…
