How do you feel about the Commanders Brand 2.0?

  • Vastly improved, if this is THE brand moving forward I’m satisfied.

  • I like the direction, but I still feel more to do. I will/have specified in thread.

  • I don’t like this new direction. I didn’t like the old either. They can’t make this work for me.

It disappeared after the players started kneeling during the National Anthem and a cop killed someone in Minneapolis. From there, a national hysteria ensued and people incredulously linked all of that to football team name that had been around since the 1930s. The media, including the venerated local paper which had always supported the local team, cheered it all on.

Goodell, Snyder, and the rest of the league had no idea how to rationally react and instead chose capitulation.

Snyder could not run a football team or deal with a mob. But he had other transgressions which stamped his ticket to Golgotha.

You don't think it's connected, I do. That's ok.

Again, I'm not saying the outrage stemmed from Snyder, I just think the NFL wanted Snyder out, and the used this opportunity to get him out without going to a vote. Changing direction and no longer vocally supporting the name was part of that process. It was a convenient opportunity to convince him to sell willingly because it was so far detached from the original team, that he broke his connection. The name will never return, can't put that toothpaste back in the tube, but the Logo was not the root of the issue, so I absolutely could see the NFL supporting bringing it back, because imho they never actually had a problem with either to begin with.

I'm bored, so I'll weigh in.

The controversy pre-dated Snyder, obviously. However, Snyder's complete and incompetent arrogance--the worst kind of arrogance--is what doomed the name. His idea of diplomacy was "fuck you, eat my ass." The only other pro-team to change their name was the Indians--and I think one: their logo was objectively racist--it mirrored Nazi caricatures of Jews, two they were such a small market, they could not sustain the loss of revenue. The other teams to change their names were smaller, less prominent colleges: NDSU, St. John's, Miami of Ohio. The remaining teams like the Braves, Chiefs, Blackhawks, and Seminoles remain. MLB and Braves ownership tried to curtail the Chop, fans ignored it, and MLB and the Braves were like "welp, we tried." The Chiefs started doing it, and no one really batted an eye. There were a few protestations, but Susan Harjo isn't in front of a camera screaming about it and Wise isn't writing pandering, self-righteous articles.

The name change was more of a referendum on Snyder than anything else. And, yes, getting Snyder out was a major component of it. A lot of people hate "Commanders," but I'd rather be the Commanders with Josh Harris than the Redskins and Dan Snyder.

I still remember an intrepid reporter asking JKC about the name after winning our 2nd Super Bowl. It had been festering for a long time and the mob exploited a killing to get it done. Rather ignoble to say the least.

I would not doubt that Goodell thought his exile was a nice sweetener, but I don't see it as a goal of the name change. I have a friend who works for respected legacy newspaper. Attends all kinds of bigwig functions. Has met several NFL owners over the years and interviewed Goodell himself. Being a Skins fan (as was Goodell), he would diplomatically bring up Snyder. The response was always the same: "Aw, Dan is a good guy, He just wants to win."

If the Danny had kept his nose clean in other areas, he would be the current owner of the Commanders. His rap sheet had simply become too much to bear.

I always wondered why, using Nike as an example, if Nike says, "Hey, we don't want to make Redskins stuff anymore!", why couldn't the NFL have pushed back and said something to the effect of, You signed a contract to make uniforms and apparel for all 32 teams, and if you don't want this lucrative deal, I'm sure someone else would (Under Armour, adidas, etc)...IMO, the NFL held all of the leverage, but let it get away.

And as for the theory that the NFL forced the name change so that they could force Snyder out...well, now that he's gone, why not let it come back? The squeaky wheels will always squeak, just ignore them.

The point with Nike is part of why i believe what I do... because there is no way Nike is able to cease the production of a contracted brand without the NFL signing off on it. It's one thing for Fedex, where the disgruntled former minority owner is the CEO, but the NFL is the giant everyone wants to hitch their wagons to... they have all the leverage with constant competition to get their golden ticket..
 
The NFL is all about money and if they brought the old name back they would lose it, from sponsors pulling out to boycotts by fans. The old logo is no longer trademarked either, thanks to Congress.

However, they need to sh*tcan the Commanders name, it still has the Stench Of Snyder.

I like Sentinels but we are mostly on the same page there. Go with an obvious Greco-Roman name. I think if they ever actually do change the name again the only realistic options are overtly Greco-Roman.
 
I know some people hate the 'Manders name because it's three syllables, although to me that isn't the issue. After all, the Jaguars are supposed to be three syllables if you listen to the British announcers: Jag-yoo-uhrz.

We could do that with Centurions too: Cen-chur-yuns. ;)

I would be fine with the Warriors, but not sure if that's trademark locked..... it's simple and could work with the new roman theme imo. Commanders just doesn't do it for me..... I tried to like it but just can't!! #HAIL
 
One has to wonder what they're up to with them slooooowly wedging the spear logo into social media posts, etc.

Does the name 'Commanders' have anything to do with spears/arrows? I don't think so...and I'm wondering if Harris & Co. have any clue what they're doing.
