I'm a Duke fan in the ATL, watching GT @ UNC...who you think I'm rootin' for?!? Heels are only up by 1, good game so far.

Been to 5 ACC tournaments back in the 90s, some of the greatest times of my life...little old ladies in their Wake Forest black pants & gold sweaters yelling at the refs (usually Lenny Wertz, lol).

Everyone feel free to share your fandom/tell stories, etc.

My wife and I are UVa alums. I started at Virginia the same year Ralph Sampson did, had him in one of my classes. Those Terry Holland teams with Ralph, Othell Wilson, Ricky Stokes, etc... were pretty amazing. It was a ton of fun going to games as an undergrad. I am in serious mourning over the loss ot Tony Bennett and I'm not sure the Virginia program will ever recover.

Also a fan, and I remember those early teams also (Lamp, Raker. Robinson). I can see why NIL and the Portal would frustrate Bennett in that he liked to "slow-cook" his roster. Being a Cavs fan is like being a Washington football fan - you gotta be in it for long haul - long years of disappointment, interspersed with magic.

But hey, I'm also a Mets fan, so ...

Obviously a Michigan State fan. Judd Heathcoate was coach when I was at school there, with players like Scott Skiles, Kevin Willis and Andre Rison (yes, the same Andre Rison that was a WR for the Falcons).

He used to spit in the trash cans at the front of the bar where I worked downtown back then. What a nasty individual.

Darian DeVries is doing a Picasso with WVU basketball so far. 2 top 10 wins (3 top 25), 1 of them at Phog Fieldhouse, and starting 10-2 while missing your top player for the last few weeks..

UNC at Duke tomorrow at 6:30. I can't wait!

Duke is absolutely smoking North Carolina. No dog in that fight, but wow, I'd had hoped it would be a competitive game to watch. Duke is obviously the better-coached and more talented team, but yikes.........

Yeah, I expected a win (but you never know with these two)...

Wow. :cheer2:

Yeah, with their rivalry, you never know what you're gonna get, no matter who's ranked higher or seemingly on a hot streak.

Duke is crushing FSU by 32. 😁

Pretty surprised that NC State fired Keatts just one year after a Final 4 run.

The Keatts situation is crazy. Last year, every NC State fan I knew wanted him fired in March. Even joked to my fried that he was going to win just enough to keep his job. Well, they have that miraculous run to win the ACC tournament (UVA handed them a game), and then the even more miraculous run to make the final 4. In the semi-finals, they played like they played 90% of the season and lost big. The smart move would have been to just leave it as it was. Except, he was given a contract extension though 2030 after the final 4 run. To fire him, they had to pay 7.8 million dollars to buy out is his contract. Just absolutely insane that a guy on the hot seat wins a few games, gets a big extension and raise, only to get fired the next year.

Looks like the Final 4 run triggered an automatic extension, per his contract. I see a similar situation for Carolina. They had a bad season, but got hot at the end of that season and made it to the championship. I don't see Davis as being any better a coach or recruiter than Keatts. My friends who are UNC fans all think Davis should be fired, even though I guess they like him for his history with their program.

I didn't realize it was an automatic extension. I guess when you write that into a contract, you are expecting a final 4 run to be part of a winning program. Not a miracle run surrounded by losing. Still crazy they had to buy him out at that number. You think it's going to hamper who they can get to replace him, but I'm sure some donor(s) will kick in to get someone they want.

As for UNC, I'm sure they will fire Davis. The fans don't tolerate being a bubble team. Even if they get in the tournament, I could see them giving him the boot.

I’m really proud of my alma mater, High Point University. Today, the basketball team won the Big South tournament to punch their ticket to the NCAA tournament. It’s the first in the programs history. I’ve been going to games since I was in college and they were still division II. I’ve rarely missed a home game in 29 years. They moved to division I my last year in college and have never won the conference tournament. They were down 15 today in the second half and came back and won by 12. They had an amazing season at 29-5, winning the regular season title. But they have won that before and didn’t win the tournament. Last year they won the regular season and lost in OT in the semi finals of the tournament. In one bid leagues, it all comes down to winning 3 games in the conference tournament. They were able to do that this year and now we will see where they play. They will probably be seeded anywhere from 12-14. I don’t know what other automatic qualifiers made it, but some those tournament winners could move their seeding up or down.

Not to be outdone, the women’s team also won the tournament today as well. It’s their second time in the big dance, but first time for this coach. They also won the regular season last year and lost in the semi finals of the tournament. They won the league again this year and were able to comeback and win the tournament championship tonight. They probably end up a 16 seed.

So a big day for all High Point alums and we are anxiously awaiting their seeding and location.

Now that the college basketball season is over for all but 4 schools, one thing has become apparently clear and that is there needs to be some reforms to things like NIL and the transfer portal. The amount of stress put on coaches having so many players leave is immense. The NIL and players just moving around for money is also very stressful. I think that's why you have seen so many coaches retiring the last several years. Tony Bennet left UVA right before the year started. Jim Larranaga retired mid season. You could even look at big name coaches who retired in teh last few years such as Jay Wright, Jim Boeheim, Coach K, and Roy Williams. And while the latter 3 were at retirement age, you have to wonder if they would retire if they could coach they way they always have. I believe that the way things have to be done now, they knew it was their time to get out.

Reforming the NIL will be very difficult. The NIL isn't really used for what it is supposed to be used for. Players are just being paid by boosters and donors. It was supposed to be to allow players to capitalize on the fact their name and likeness is being used to generate money for the schools, TV Networks, etc. But it just seems like it's open negotiations with schools to see who will pay the players the most money. The TV Networks are still making a ton of money and the schools have just found new ways to get money to pay players while still taking in all the money from TV contracts, etc. Every school has an NIL program where you can donate money to pay the players. I just think the NIL situation is a mess that will be very difficult to reign in. And whatever reforms are proposed., there will always be problems with how players are paid as it either won't be enough for some players and schools or will put a burden on other schools who can't afford to pay what is necessary to compete. So it's just a mess and it's probably going to get worse before it gets better. The toothpaste is out of the tube on this one and I don't think there is anyway to get it back in.

The transfer portal, however, I think can be more easily reformed. As it is now, so many players are essentially free agents every year. They play at one school one year and head to the portal to go to the next school. There are currently over 1500 players in the transfer portal and the transfer portal window just opened this past week. A lot of that is for players to get more money from their current school or a new school, some of it is for players to get more playing time, and some kids just want to be in a different situation. But in my opinion, I think they should get rid of allowing unlimited transfers without sitting out. They should allow only 1 free transfer; otherwise, you have to sit out a year if you transfer. I think they also could institute something that says you only get that no sit transfer if you have been at the same school for 2 years. That will give some level of continuity for coaches to try and build a team. I do think they should allow players to transfer without sitting out if their coach leaves for any reason (firing, resigning, taking another job, retiring, etc.) I think that is one thing the old system was a bit too harsh with. A coach leaving means a change in philosophy, players, etc. So allowing a kid to transfer and not sit out should be allowed in that instance. But they need to do something to reign in the transfer portal which is basically the wild, wild west now.
