I don't understand this move. Why not trade him at the 2024 deadline & get something for him? Also, I thought Finnegan was under contract for 2025.

This is a result of him cratering in the 2nd half last year: 5.79 ERA and .894 OPS against.

Yeah, I did some more reading after posting my initial comment. I didn't realize his arbitration number was $8-9M. That's too high for him. And you're right, his August & September numbers were awful.
 
He wasn’t worth it, but I’m going to be miffed if we don’t spend. Real miffed.
 
The Lerners are done paying. They pretty much define worthless sports team ownership at this point. I think there are teams who pay less and try harder than the Lerners.

I am surprised that they managed to get to 90 million with this roster. Haven't looked at where the weight is, but I imagine Scherzer is a big part of it. Good old deferrals. It's purely from memory and maybe I'm way off, but I don't think I am.

I'm no expert but I just read that Jackson Holliday's younger brother. Ethan, is the #1 prospect - 17yo.

Ever since Jackson Holliday went No. 1 overall in the 2022 Draft, he has told people that his younger brother is better than he was at the same stage. Ethan is more physical and powerful than Jackson and much more closely resembles their father, seven-time All-Star Matt. Both brothers scuffled on the showcase circuit entering their Draft years, but while Jackson was considered a second-round talent at that point, Ethan is a leading candidate to get taken No. 1 in July.
Holliday may have the most usable left-handed power in the Draft and he generates it with little effort. Still adding to his 6-foot-4 frame, he already has plenty of strength and an easy left-handed swing with plenty of bat speed and leverage. He tried to do too much when he got pitched around on the circuit last summer, leading to some swing-and-miss concerns, but he should develop into at least an average hitter with 35-homer pop and plenty of walks.
Holliday moves well for his size and has average speed, though he'll probably lose a step as he continues to mature physically. He has nice actions and solid arm strength at shortstop, but he won't cover enough ground to stay there on a long-term basis. The Oklahoma State recruit projects better as a slugging third baseman and could be a quality defender on the hot corner.

From what I've read. It's not the best year to have the #1 overall, but it's not bad either. The best years are ones like 2009, 2010, 2023, etc. Strasburg, Harper, and Skenes would be #1 overall in almost every draft class.

The top has some more questions but there's talent. Like there's a Top 3 to the draft, but they wouldn't be in the #1 overall conversation if say Skenes was in this draft.

College season hasn't happened yet, so there's still a lot of movement that can happen. It's not like the Harper draft where everybody already knew he would go #1 overall before the college season even started. Skenes did develop and dominate in his last college season, so maybe that could happen again?

The top 3 are a college outfielder that can hit and defend. A college pitcher with only 2 pitches. And a high school 3rd baseman that hits but isn't much of a defender. The last one is getting the most buzz as he's Jackson Holliday's brother.

I agree, but I'm not convinced it was just about the money.

I wanted him to stay with the Yankees, the difference was minimal, but extra gravy like his own suite was jus ridiculous.

I believe he also has an opt out in 5 years, so he has chance to do this all over again at 31. Case can be made Mets had better near term future in paper and the contract was jus a better contract.

Did Nats even make an offer this offseason? Asking for a friend...
