Second-rounder!I thought it was an early 3rd rounder. They also (I think) gave him a big extension. Luvu and Dante Fowler have been a MUCH better duo than Sweat and Young. I was always skeptical about Chase Y, but I thought Montez would be a solid player, similar to Orakpo when healthy.

The only thing I would quibble with in your post is the trade was 4 months before Peters was hired.I've lost track of which of our 3 2nd round picks was the one from Chicago - but I'm thinking that is the one we used to select Johnny Newton? We also grabbed Mike Sainristil and Ben Sinnott in the 2nd round. I think it's too early to grade the Sweat trade, but I think the trade signaled that Peters wasn't sure they could re-sign him and it was smart to get something meaningful for him while they could. The Sweat trade was in stark contrast to them dumping Chase Young. I think they valued Sweat and recognized his talent, but in a rebuilding year they needed to maximize assets and there was no guarantee Sweat would've stayed in Washington. I think they saw Young as a net negative and were glad to get him out of the building.

I mean, anything is possible but he was an employee of the 49ers so that would be extreme tampering all the way around.Ahhh.... you are right Voice, thanks for keeping me straight. Although you do have to wonder if Peters was already more or less a done deal and perhaps voiced an opinion... or maybe I'm just trying to salvage the point, lol...
I also quickly was like, "Yeah Boone, exactly" - just let us have it. Come on man. (Actually yes I think AP wasn't involved, but I too am stubborn to admit defeat)I mean, anything is possible but he was an employee of the 49ers so that would be extreme tampering all the way around.
I tend to believe the simplest answer is the right one: Harris knew he needed to blow the team up because even a lay person could tell that and getting more assets is better than getting less assets.
Also, he probably knew he wanted to get the best pick possible and any way to help that cause was a good one.

Hold on, hold the phone - are you trying to say Ron Rivera may not have drafted Sweat well??? Sacrilege! I think the reality of Sweat was that he was the best we could hope for in the Ron days. It's typical of teams' fans in that situation - grab onto those kinds of events and blow them up. Hopefully we have exited that period, it certainly feels that way!I was never big on Sweat. I think fans started liking him more because Young was a bust. Otherwise, I think more fans would have seen he is not an impact rusher. Only 1 season with double digit sacks, and that was last year in a year he was traded and was due for a new contract. Whoever was responsible for that trade was smart because he was going to get paid top tier defensive end money for a guy who averaged 7 sacks a year. Good for him for having 1 good year and getting traded to another bad team and getting paid. Better for this organization getting something for him before he signed a big contract that will be tough to live up to.
Just a point of clarification, Sweat was drafted by the old regime. He was drafted in 2019 by Bruce and company.Hold on, hold the phone - are you trying to say Ron Rivera may not have drafted Sweat well??? Sacrilege! I think the under appreciated element of dropping Sweat and Young, is that it helped the tank.
