Montez Sweat

I don’t mean to be overly rude about this, but I honestly haven’t given him 30 seconds of thought since he left here, and don’t plan to.

I thought it was an early 3rd rounder. They also (I think) gave him a big extension. Luvu and Dante Fowler have been a MUCH better duo than Sweat and Young. I was always skeptical about Chase Y, but I thought Montez would be a solid player, similar to Orakpo when healthy.

Second-rounder!

I've lost track of which of our 3 2nd round picks was the one from Chicago - but I'm thinking that is the one we used to select Johnny Newton? We also grabbed Mike Sainristil and Ben Sinnott in the 2nd round. I think it's too early to grade the Sweat trade, but I think the trade signaled that Peters wasn't sure they could re-sign him and it was smart to get something meaningful for him while they could. The Sweat trade was in stark contrast to them dumping Chase Young. I think they valued Sweat and recognized his talent, but in a rebuilding year they needed to maximize assets and there was no guarantee Sweat would've stayed in Washington. I think they saw Young as a net negative and were glad to get him out of the building.

The only thing I would quibble with in your post is the trade was 4 months before Peters was hired.

This was a Eugene Chen/Josh Harris decision.

I thought it was the right one at the time, because Sweat wasn’t going to be worth the contract he was going to get. Whether they could sign him or not.

But it was more of a Harris thing than anything.

Ahhh.... you are right Voice, thanks for keeping me straight. Although you do have to wonder if Peters was already more or less a done deal and perhaps voiced an opinion... or maybe I'm just trying to salvage the point, lol...

I was all over trading Chase but the Sweat deal I had concerns, especially after he played really well for the Bears in his first season. I loved his speed, we saw it when he ran with Jayden and forced him out of bounds on a boot. With Payne and Allen under big deals I understood why they did it but I was concerned they would come to regret it. While I can understand why some fans remove a player from their thoughts after they leave Washington I keep track. I find it interesting to see if they made the right move or not and right now I'm glad our team is not paying $24M/year for 4.5 sacks although I know stats can be deceiving. For what it's worth PFF gives him an overall grade of 64.2 which is slightly above average. Looks like we got the Bears. Again.

I do hope somone can supply exactly who we drafted with the pick, I can't remember.

"I like coach Flus. He's a player's coach," Sweat said. "He puts his playmakers in a position to make plays. And he's a funny guy."

I mean, anything is possible but he was an employee of the 49ers so that would be extreme tampering all the way around.

I tend to believe the simplest answer is the right one: Harris knew he needed to blow the team up because even a lay person could tell that and getting more assets is better than getting less assets.

Also, he probably knew he wanted to get the best pick possible and any way to help that cause was a good one.

I believe the 2nd rounder we got from Chicago ultimately went to Philly where they took Cooper Dejean. The two picks we got from that trade were 50 and 53 which ended up being Sainristil and Sinnott.

I think the under appreciated element of dropping Sweat and Young, is that it helped the tank. Our pass rush sucked once we dropped them. We generate just a little more pressure in just one game last year, and we might win that game. And then we'd all be here talking about our future with someone like JJ McCarthy, instead of Jayden Daniels.

Just in terms of talent, I'd be happy to have Sweat here. But Sainristil looks like more of an impact player than Sweat right now. And for Sweat, we got the tank/Jayden Daniels, Sainristil, and Sinnott, and about $20 million dollars in cap space instead. It doesn't get a lot better than that. I do wish

I do wish Sweat Well. I cant't help but wonder what Chase Young would have looked like if we here drafted by our current regime. With our culture at the time, we were probably the absolute worst place for Chase Young to land. Wasted physical talent.

I was surprised we traded both. Didn't like the move from a short term perspective as I thought it left us weak. However, Rivera's willingness to lay down and just give up and throw the towel in on an entire season did leave us in what turned out to be the best position. Without the first, second, or maybe third pick in the draft, not only do we not get Daniels, but we very likely don't get Peters.

I honestly think Peters looked at our cap position which was as friendly as you could ask for, a treasure trove of amazing draft choices, and said, "I'm never going to be offered a chance this good again. I'm never going to be offered this clean a state."

So, the Sweat trade not only netted us a 2nd rounder, helped the tank that led to Daniels, but it also made us that much more attractive to Peters who may be as important to this turnaround as anyone.

I also quickly was like, "Yeah Boone, exactly" - just let us have it. Come on man. (Actually yes I think AP wasn't involved, but I too am stubborn to admit defeat)

I was never big on Sweat. I think fans started liking him more because Young was a bust. Otherwise, I think more fans would have seen he is not an impact rusher. Only 1 season with double digit sacks, and that was last year in a year he was traded and was due for a new contract. Whoever was responsible for that trade was smart because he was going to get paid top tier defensive end money for a guy who averaged 7 sacks a year. Good for him for having 1 good year and getting traded to another bad team and getting paid. Better for this organization getting something for him before he signed a big contract that will be tough to live up to.

Hold on, hold the phone - are you trying to say Ron Rivera may not have drafted Sweat well??? Sacrilege! I think the reality of Sweat was that he was the best we could hope for in the Ron days. It's typical of teams' fans in that situation - grab onto those kinds of events and blow them up. Hopefully we have exited that period, it certainly feels that way!

This point by Utah sums up my feelings on Montez Sweat-

Of course I want the BFS (Bigger, Faster, Stronger) players so that we can cover up mistakes with just being the better athlete. However, I want guys who don't depend on their abilities more than their mind because I am not sure I have ever met any one who helped their team win when they didn't put the other 10 guys in front of them.”

Sweat has more than his share of God-given physical abilities but I never thought, even once, that he placed a commitment to the group above his personal interests. He was renoun for his trash-talk in practice rather than being a leader and striving to make those around him of lesser talent better. Compare him to Wagner, who is not nearly as physically gifted, but raises the bar of all of those he plays with.

Just a point of clarification, Sweat was drafted by the old regime. He was drafted in 2019 by Bruce and company.

The Skins traded back up to the 26th pick to grab sweat after picking Haskins at 15.

Did Ron figure out how to use Sweat correctly. No. But he inherit sweat.

Sweat was a pre-Rivera selection.

Also, look how embarrassing these draft classes are.

It’s even worse than I remembered.

Anyway, Sweat did have some big impact moments here. He’s definitely not worth that contract.

It’s amazing how different the outlook on the bears was before this season. Supposed to have a great defense. Better OL than us. Elite receiving weapons. Just the perfect set up for Caleb. That was the prevailing line of thinking.
