Monte Coleman #51 RIP

Wow, this one is kind of a gut punch. Obviously I didn't know him personally, but met him more than a few times at the Park. Nicest person that could be. And such a steady presence in the middle for so long. RIP Monte. You were one of the good ones.

I happened to be picking up an order at my local Pappadeaux in team gear years ago, had a drink at the bar while I waited. Nice friendly "kid" asked me, "Are you really a Redskins fan?" and of course I responded with "Since 1973!" He just did a few things on his phone and put it in front of me (photos) and said, "My dad is Monte Coleman." and I said "Linebacker!" and he went back to working. So I scanned through all kinds of pics of him, his family, just waiting for my order.
That was a great half hour.
RIP #51.

I always loved seeing Coleman stand in line during the starting lineups just holding his helmet high in the air. It was so symbolic of the teams of that era that it was about the Redskins and the Redskins only. Not about an individual player, but the team. He was a great player and it’s a sad day losing a legend like him.

Watching this video makes me sad, I miss caring about my team as much as I did back then.

I feel that so sometimes I wonder if we care less not only because we've been losing so much over the years, but because of fantasy football and free agency. Our attachment to players just aren't the same because so few are Redskins for life.

Then again, maybe we just don't care as much because we're all older and we've gotten more mature. Nah....

It's both for sure. I lost my passion when I was in my 40's, just figured Norv Turner sucked it out of me. But then I talked to friends who root for winning teams who were my age and they felt the same. I saw it with Maryland Basketball too.

But the decades of losing and embarrassment with this team have taken a toll as well.

It will never be the same especially after the WOS years and then forcing this horrid name on us. But, I still yell at the tv and my wife after 25 plus gets annoyed because she still can't understand why I get so obnoxiously loud at "just a football game." So it is still there. A bit diminished with a weird name, but they are still my Redskins no matter how they try to bury them.

Tough to say.

The last time our team was good- and I mean consistently rather than sporadically good- Monte Coleman was on the team and still had a couple of seasons left in the tank.

I was still in middle school when he arrived. By the time he retired, I had graduated from both high school and college and had been doing the 9-5 for years. The man was a constant in a period of consistent change.

He preceded Coach Gibbs and stuck around after he was gone. Plus 4 Super Bowl appearances with 3 rings. Honestly, one could make an argument that he is the most iconic Redskin rather than Green, Sonny, Monk, Riggo, or JT.

With free agency, we will rarely if ever see that kind of tenure. The last I can remember was Ryan Zimmerman on the Nats. Even Brady did his swan song on another team.

Oh I made plenty of noise during that magical 2024 season. But I no longer pace the floor on 3rd and 7 as I once did. I missed 1 game in over 40 years, that dreadful 3-0 loss to the Jets that fell during the holidays. A few years ago I just didn't watch all the games. Once Snyder sold I'm fully committed again but as you said it will never be the same, for me anyway this feeling has nothing to do with the name.

Im the exact same way and although i have no real way of knowing I feel losing the name played a big part.

Sad day for Redskins fans.. What a class act he was! Everything you could ask for in a professional player and so much more.
RIP Monty and thanks for the memories!!

I met his son, he was bartending at my favorite restaurant. While I was waiting for a take out order ( I was wearing team gear) he gave me his phone with a bunch of photos. I almost lost my mind. :cheer2:
