Mock Drafts Thread

I've always been a believer in adding a WR in the draft when it is the piece that will potentially complete the puzzle for your offense and make it well-rounded. Right now, on offense we haven't even taken the puzzle pieces out of the box so to speak. The defensive line position is arguably the deepest in the draft - time for us to use this to our advantage because there is a clear and desperate need there.
 
No one can doubt that he is an absolutely beast of an athlete. I heard his hands were a question. I still vote we draft best player avalable on the D-line in the 1st round.
 
And 8 weeks to recover is NOTHING. Sounds like he would be available for Training Camp so I don't see an issue with the foot surgery. Not sure a WR is the route Mike would take but talking to him and blowing a little smoke could help our trade-down chances.

I also wouldn't have a problem taking him at #10 since WR is a need.....one of many.

Meaningless Mock Draft 1.0

1. Carolina Panthers: Da' Quan Bowers, DE, Clemson

This is without a doubt a tough year to have the #1 overall pick. Frankly, it's hard to say that there is a definitive #1 overall pick since Andrew Luck decided to stay at Stanford. The Panthers have a lot of needs and it's doubtful that one player alone will fix the team's problems.

I can't see them taking either Cam Newton or Blaine Gabbert here. Both are too risky especially when the Panthers only have 1 pick in the first two rounds.....they need to find a player that will be with them for years to come. While DT may be a slightly bigger need, I'm going with Bowers over Nick Fairley since a franchise pass rushing DE is almost as valuable as a franchise QB.

2. Denver Broncos: Nick Fairley, DT, Auburn

With John Fox in as the new head coach, the Broncos are heading back to a 4-3 defensive scheme. In order to succeed, they need a DT to help penetrate and collapse the pocket. Fairley reminds me of Albert Haynesworth.... take that as you will, but I think he'll be taken over Marcell Dareus because of his pass rush capabilities.

3. Buffalo Bills: Marcell Dareus, DE (3-4), Alabama

The Bills had the worst run defense in the league last year. In eight games, the team gave up over two hundred yards on the ground alone. They need to fix their defensive line to help this. Dareus would be a perfect fit as a five technique DE in Buffalo's scheme. Dareus is an excellent run stuffer and should be a problem in the pass game as well.

4. Cincinnati Bengals: Cam Newton, QB, Auburn
Really if this was an ideal situation the Bengals should be debating on whether they take elite WR prospect AJ Green or elite corner prospect Patrick Peterson. Problem is that Carson Palmer doesn't want to be a Bengal anymore and I for one believe him. Newton is a classic Bengals prospect. Lots of potential and some serious red flags. This pick also makes sense as the Bengals will be looking for a new face of the franchise with the possibility of both T.O., Chad Ochocinco and Palmer leaving the team.

5. Arizona Cardinals: Von Miller, OLB, Texas A&M

Possibly the safest pick in the draft. The Cardinals go for a pass rusher to help their D look more like Pittsburgh's steel curtain.

6. Cleveland Browns: A.J. Green, WR, Georgia
Colt McCoy needs somebody to throw to and while he has some young WR talent on his team, the Browns lack a clear #1 caliber WR. Green easily fits that need.

7. San Francisco 49ers: Patrick Peterson, CB, LSU
This pick is made amazingly quick. The 49ers need a corner and now have the opportunity to get the best one in the draft.

8. Tennessee Titans: Blaine Gabbert, QB, Missouri
The Vince Young era is over in Tennessee and he Titans with a new head coach will be looking for their next franchise QB. Without a doubt they need one. Kerry Collins is only a million years old in NFL years and Rusty (I'm Rusty!!!) Smith looks like he'll be a serviceable back up but I don't think he's one of the NFL's elite QBs. Gabbert should see some playing time by mid-season.

9. Dallas Cowboys: Prince Amukamara, CB, Nebraska
The weakest link of the Cowboys could be their secondary. Dallas goes for the upgrade with a new corner.

10. Washington Redskins: Robert Quinn, OLB, North Carolina
The Skins have said that their top priority is to add another pass rushing LB opposite of Brian Orakpo. While they have other needs (WR, G, C, RB, DE, NT, ILB and QB) most of those positions don't have a player worthy of #10 overall at this point. Julio Jones is an option, but has injury issues and with no QB to throw to him (yet?) it doesn't seem worth it. Quinn or Aldon Smith look like viable options and I think Smith could be a serious option. In this mock, I'm going with Quinn as many consider him to be at worst the 2nd best pass rusher in this draft class.

Skins trade out of the 10th....pick up a 3rd rndr......and draft Locker in the first rnd. Do I like this scenario? No. But I can see it happening.

I feel that way about Cam Newton.
I know many are high on Jones, but his injuries (broken hand, broken foot) concern me. Skins already have a talented WR that is never on the field b/c of injury. I also don't like drafting a WR in the 1st. It's about a 60% bust rate.

Personally, if the Skins don't trade back I want them to go D. It's not a flashy pick but despite taking Quinn in my mock I really have become a fan of Cal's Cameron Jordan as a DE in our 3-4. It should also help Orakpo (the argument for drafting a OLB at #10) and Joradn just has demolished most of the OL talent this year.
 
The good thing about Jones still being avalable at #10 is we might be able to find a trade down partner. The Rams stick out in my mind. Getting a 3rd round pick would be nice. I agree about Cameron Jordon. I think he would make an immediate impact to our struggling defense.
 
I also like the idea of getting Cam Jordan particularly from the perspective of immediate contribution to the D.

Just to keep things interesting, a couple of names that seem like plausibles at #10:

Corey Liuget, DT-Illinois

Ras-I Dowling, CB Virginia. I'm seeing Carlos Rogers leaving and this guy put up good combine numbers, has good hands(!) and is 6"-2"


Ryan Kerrigan, DE-Purdue

Edit: I wanted to add that these are names I'd also consider looking at in a potential trade-down scenario since they haven't been usually associated with the presumed first-rounders.
 
From February 25th:

Mayock said nose tackle has great depth in the draft as well.

“If Marcell Dareus [from Alabama] and Nick Fairley [from Auburn] are there – they’re not noses, but they’re defensive tackles – I’d jump all over them,” he said, “But I don’t think they’ll be there [at No. 10]. After that you’re probably not going to get a nose tackle until the second or third round. Phil Taylor from Baylor would be a logical guy for [the Redskins] in the second round.”

Now he's saying that Taylor won't likely last to the second round.

Maybe we could trade down and pick him up later in the first, and get another pick.

I really do not see any of these guys going that high, after reading about them, here are a few concerns I have. Also, please correct me if I am wrong. I am trying to learn more about the game just like all of you.

Cam Jordan and Ryan Kerrigan are going to be too small to play DE for us, they would have to add major weight and they are not athletic enough to move to LB.

If we want a LB we need to look at Aldon Smith and Robert Quinn.

Corey Liuget is projected to be a 3-tech DT. If we were still running the 4-3, he would be an option, but not as high as #10.

I know it is not popular, but if Phil Taylor is the game changing NT he is projected to be, I would take him. Why take him that high? IMO, outside of QB, a dominant NT is the hardest position to fill. With half of the league running a 3-4 these days, guys like him are in high demand. Now we have a handful of 4-3 teams behind us in the draft and then you have New England. If we do not take him, I believe he will be a Pat. If you trade down to take him, it better be before the Pats come on the board.

The LB and DE are deep in this draft. So I think you reach for Taylor and pick up the LB later. Also, you move Fat Al to the outside. This is a pipe dream, but the line would look very solid with Carriker, Taylor, and Haynesworth. Also, remember that there is going to be a rookie salary cap this year.

Ras-I Dowling only played in five games las year. He had knee, hamstring, and ankle injuries. I would say no-thank you to this kind of player. Especially at #10. I think he slips out of the first round all together because of the injury issues.

To end this, my perfect scenario (or pipe dream) would be to trade down a couple of spots take Phil Taylor and grab Andy Dalton at the top of the second. Hopefully we can knab these two.

I think the idea that Phil Taylor won't make it until the 2nd round is a pretty good bet. At the absolute latest he goes #30 to the Jets. I agree with trading down a few spots and gathering a pick or two and taking Taylor. When you think about the quarterbacks in this draft, besides Gabbert I think Dalton could be the best fit. While he is a project, his accuracy, mental makeup and overall athleticism could work really well.
 
Skinsfan76 - he hit 49-52 in his workout today. Two of those incompletions were drops. That is why I like the guy, he is accurate and he has improved every year. He has a solid body of work to judge from. He is the guy no one is discussing. I have my fingers crossed. He has some work to do, but he seems athletic enough to overcome any obstacles.
