We will find out a bit more about the Terps on Sunday, as they travel to West Lafayette to take on a very good Purdue team, that is licking their wounds from getting beat up by Penn State in State College. Purdue can really shoot, especially from behind the arc, but I think the Maryland defense can trouble them. Purdue had 22 turnovers against Penn State, and the Maryland backcourt harassed Ohio State all night, forcing 16 turnovers.
I don’t think Perdue are especially deep, and Maryland, when Geronimo and Long get fit, will be able to go 10-11 deep without much drop off. Having Miguel, Gillespie, Rice, DHS, Young, and Palmer rotating keeps everyone fresh. Queen and Juju add good size, and I am digging Gapare, and his athleticism. When Geronimo, another good athlete with size, and Long get back, this team is loaded. Haven’t even mentioned Chance Stephens, who missed all last year, but is supposedly an excellent shooter. Unfortunately, looks like Braden Pierce will miss the rest of the season due to a detached retina he suffered in practice the other day. Too bad, because he was looking decent in a few cameos this year, and at 7’1” adds a whole nother dimension.
B1G is gonna be a dogfight this year. 9 teams in this week’s top 25, and that did not include either Maryland or Penn St. Getting wins on the road is always tough in the league, but is what will separate these teams. After Perdue, Maryland has 3 out of conference games, then starts the new year at Washington and Oregon. If the Terps could win 2 of these 3 consecutive away league games, it would put them in a great position to get one of the tournament byes. Should be a fun season regardless.
