Maryland Men’s Basketball

Got some fun stories from Lefty’s camp. My last year there, I was 17, and Bob Elmore, Len’s little brother was a counselor. I had made friends with a guy rooming across the hall, and Bob was chatting us up. He found out that this friend of mine had brought some weed. Told us to be outside our rooms at 10:15, after the 10 o’clock curfew. Grabbed us, made a big show of yelling at us, and telling us we were gonna run stairs at Byrd Stadium till we dropped. Instead took us over that way, and we ducked in the trees and smoked a doobie.😂

Maryland bball was always my 1b to the Redskins 1a. All the way back to Lefty, McMillen, Elmore, Howard, Lucas, O’Brien, Sheppard, Manning, etal. When they exited the ACC I lost that passion. For me it was similar to when the Senators moved to Arlington, Texas.
I like the NFL more than college basketball. It's the only sport where I can watch 2 random teams play and enjoy it. So I guess my ranking is the same as yours.

Holy shit! Guess the boys were a little pissed off about the close loss to Marquette the other night, and Canisius bore the brunt. 108-37? They win by 71? Insane! Reese leads scorers with only 20. 7 guys in double figures. If it’s not largest win all time, it’s gotta be close!

Just looked it up. 2nd all time. They beat N Texas by 75 in 1998.

Sorry I was not able to see this game, that sounds like a good result regardless of the opponent.

Big gutty win! Queen stepped up that second half. Gave up too many offensive rebounds. Dixon was unstoppable. Will be back later with more thoughts, gotta finish this Skins game.

Wish I had watched the Terps instead of that Shitshow at NW stadium. Looks like a helluva comeback. I’ll watch it later tonight or tomorrow.

I flipped it over to watch the last 2 possessions. The football game was that bad, that I didn’t care if I missed anything.

Queen sometimes moves too fast and makes bad decisions. But he also has some nice passes. As a whole there were too many turnovers and guys telegraphing passes. Defense in the first half was not so good, not getting to loose balls, etc.

I want to see Harris-Smith get more involved offensively, he did a lot of dirty work though. Palmer and Young didn't take many shots, but they both hit big 3s in the second half. I think Rice is our best shooter. Reese was active under the rim, that is what we need from him.

BIG game about to tip off. Find out a lot about this year’s Terps team tonight.

WOW! Just WOW!

If this team plays like this, it’s gonna be a fun year! Defense is smothering. They’ve got multiple guys who can step out and hit 3s, and can take it to the rack. Gillespie making me forget Jahmir Young tonight…hitting 3s, winding drives to the hole, in your face defense…awesome.

Lots of guys chipping in as well, and that’s what makes this team dangerous. They can legit go 10-11 guys deep, without much drop off. Willard has put together a pretty good, fun to watch squad this season. Just pray that Derik Queen decides to stay one more year, but man, that kid has NBA skills right now.

33 point lead over an Ohio State team that was ranked last week? I predict the Terps will win this one!😂

I was not expecting this team to play this well. They still don't have an alpha, a Melo, Jamhir Young type of player. I thought initially it may be Gilespie, and he has played very well. He just does not take it on himself to be the scoring leader. But they play typical MD defense, when was the last time they didn't have a team that played tough on the ball defense?

It was obvious from the first time I saw them that they have a lot of different players who can score and that's huge. Queen is as good as advertised. Shout out to Julian Reese for putting in the work to improve his free throw stroke dramatically. I think my favorite player is Gapare, I love his energy, length, athletic ability and he can shoot it. I feel badly for Geronimo. He was damned good in his role for us in the past and now he can't get any minutes due to the depth of this year's team.

We will find out a bit more about the Terps on Sunday, as they travel to West Lafayette to take on a very good Purdue team, that is licking their wounds from getting beat up by Penn State in State College. Purdue can really shoot, especially from behind the arc, but I think the Maryland defense can trouble them. Purdue had 22 turnovers against Penn State, and the Maryland backcourt harassed Ohio State all night, forcing 16 turnovers.

I don’t think Perdue are especially deep, and Maryland, when Geronimo and Long get fit, will be able to go 10-11 deep without much drop off. Having Miguel, Gillespie, Rice, DHS, Young, and Palmer rotating keeps everyone fresh. Queen and Juju add good size, and I am digging Gapare, and his athleticism. When Geronimo, another good athlete with size, and Long get back, this team is loaded. Haven’t even mentioned Chance Stephens, who missed all last year, but is supposedly an excellent shooter. Unfortunately, looks like Braden Pierce will miss the rest of the season due to a detached retina he suffered in practice the other day. Too bad, because he was looking decent in a few cameos this year, and at 7’1” adds a whole nother dimension.

B1G is gonna be a dogfight this year. 9 teams in this week’s top 25, and that did not include either Maryland or Penn St. Getting wins on the road is always tough in the league, but is what will separate these teams. After Perdue, Maryland has 3 out of conference games, then starts the new year at Washington and Oregon. If the Terps could win 2 of these 3 consecutive away league games, it would put them in a great position to get one of the tournament byes. Should be a fun season regardless.

I was not aware that Germonio was injured, thanks for this. Sorry to hear about Pierce, he could use the time to develop.

I can't believe this but this CBS poll has the Terps ranked #2 https://www.cbssports.com/college-b...jumps-to-the-top-maryland-rockets-up-to-no-2/ . I think that is crazy and I don't think they will win at Perdue as they never win at Perdue. But I really saw this as another bubble team that would again struggle to grind out close wins in a very tough BIG. Now I think they may be a little better than that. But the conference is brutal.

Yeah, Geronimo played a few early season games, then pulled his hammy. Hear he and Long are both close to getting back on the court.

Detached retina? God horrible. I was looking forward to seeing Pierce develop. Looking forward to getting Geronimo back. I will be tuned in tomorrow.

Tie game....Reese still has bad hands. But he is a really good rim protector. Rice and Gillespie shooting well, although Rice blew a wide open layup. Evenly matched teams.

Great final 5 minutes to end the half! Queen is such a good passer, cleans up the boards too. I love Miguel's energy, he had a big 3 then next possession drove down the length of the court for a layup.

Awful defense the final 10 minutes. Reese needs to figure out how to stay out of foul trouble. Miguel hits a miracle 3 to cut it to 4, then Queen with a meaningless foul with one second left to kill the spread lol (it was +5 so push).

I want to see Gillespie looks for his shot more. I liked seeing Queen hit some 3s.

You’d think that in 4 years, Juju would’ve figured out how to not be a walking foul. So much talent, so disappointing. His foul trouble led directly to Purdue’s late run against Terps’ small lineup. Tough to win in West Lafayette. Double tough when your big guy is a knucklehead.

Yeah JuJu is a frustrating player, every time I see him play I think he should be better by now. He did improve his free throw stroke and major props for that but he's still got the same problem. When they had the ball up 6 in the 2nd half I really thought they were going to win, and it's great that my team now plays at this level. But the coach screwed up several times. He waited two posessions too long before calling a timeout after Perdue went on a run and tied the game. Queen got a steal and layup to buy him some relief but then the Boilermakers hit a 3 and he finally called a timeout. Perhaps pulling Reese after he got his 3rd at the start of the 2nd half would have been the smart move, I know fouling and not letting the clock run down when you are down 7 was the correct move that he didn't make.
