Just a little pet peeve of mine. Nothing big.

Yeah, I accept that it is what it is.

yeah but words have a funny habbit of having multiple meanings, and to accomidate that dictionaries often cite these multiple meanings.

one of the synonyms is Original.

If you prefer original because it fits your narrowed definition of words then that's fine. But to claim Native is incorrect is wrong. It's not incorrect. It's well within the definition of the word and the rules of the English language.

Well, that's just one of the definitions of Native. One of the others is being indigenous. They're all synonyms... Native is not incorrect...

Also, it's used to refer to a race of people. So while an individual born in America is native to America, their race (which is the context in which the phrase is used) is not native to America.

Come on t. It's Ax.

If I say it's incorrect, it's incorrect.

Pulling up definition #437 doesn't change that. ;)

I am stealing this from Dead Money...

Of course the irony is that 80% of the politicians screaming about the name haven't done a damn thing about Native American issues in their careers.

oh yea they have! ever thought about applying for a job at the Bureau of Indian Affairs? there is a specific going in requirement that is...well...profile based. i now this cuz I wanted to apply for a cyber job there I thought I might be able to perform well at for the ultimate customers.

no "final bit from you", please. You are one of the contributors that I trust and like to hear from about this. From my standpoint you have more intelligent things to say than any article that I could read since you've lived it.

I appreciate that. I just don't want things to get too political on the sons of Washington forum. :)

I just lurk on here and post when I feel I have something relevant to add. I just don't think there is much more for me to add to this at this time.

well, speaking for myself, I need more of your style of posting. So, please, speak your mind whenever you want. Less lurking, more talking! how else are we going to convince you to come to our annual tailgate?

Ha, I've been thinking about how to make that happen. We'll see where everything in my life is this year, and if flying across country is manageable with everything else. I need to get there at some point!

Final bit from me:

5 Ways The Government Keeps Native Americans In Poverty - Forbes

Work on that, senators and congresspeople worrying on the name change.

I'm onboard with that. there would be a trade-off, however. the tribes would have to cut deals with the folks who have the capital to develop the resources. plus, you know coal runs head long into the global warming/environment religionists.

I have no clue: do the tribes have the internal leadership and entrepreneurship skills to run with it?

When I said if you're going to do this you have to do it right, this is not what I meant.

As one of the article commenters stated, the Washington Post doesn't seem particularly interested in vetting Halbritter, who regardless of what we learn about the new foundation head, is imminently more shady and spurious... It's a mystery why the Post isn't publishing expose's on his background, qualifications, and motivations?

I was going to ask Wise if he had vetted Halbritter yet, but I 'm not a member.

Heres the deal, I wrote the Redskins a letter warning them that if they found a native spokesperson it needed to be someone beyond reproach, instead they found some loser who made false claims to being a chief of a group of people who really arent even considered a first nations people. that cost him credibility.

second off, and this is of huge importance, when we quote 75% of indians who arent offended by the name the number is actually much lower, that 75% is actually people who dont care, mostly because they have more important shit to worry about like feeding their families or getting clean water to drink. there is support for the redskins, but the truth is not that many Indians even watch football.

the numbers are slowly changing to negative numbers for us because the loudest indians are the ones who really find offense, the fake stories about how redskins meant people who were skinned, or scalping, went viral among native people on facebook. I had a couple articles posted but thats a couple against the hundreds of " get rid of the name" articles. what Dan did here is smart, but like Boone said, if its a one and done thing, it will actually hurt the perception of the team, and if he wants to really get some good publicity, he has enough money, start a scholarship fund, help some native kids go to university. and publicise this stuff, because the truth is most native people dont trust white people, and we think we have very good reasons not to. if you dont understand , just google "wounded knee, medals of dishonour."

I hope not to steer the thread away from it's intended course, but I just have to say.

Wounded Knee was an undeniable human tragedy. It is understandable for some to use it as a rallying cry against the white man.

But make no mistake, history is also filled with Indians slaughtering innocent men, women, and children. White, and Red. Being a victim of it, does not wipe their own slate clean.

Man can be an evil SOB. And they come in every color.

Hopefully this will be run appropriately, be sustained for many years to come and truly help impoverished Native Americans who have much bigger things to worry about than a team name. I, as well as probably any other Redskin fan, am more than happy to support a cause or organization that helps those in need.

With that said, as John previously mentioned, it annoys the holy hell out of me that Snyder felt pressured into some type of action as a result of this "controversy." Our team shouldn't have to do jack crap to "prove" to Bob Costas and all these other dipwads in the press that we're not a racist organization and the term "Redskins" is not a racial epithet. I am a very empathetic individual and pride myself on trying to understand another person's situation before I start judging, telling them to shut up or even writing them off forever. However, this is not a case of a group of people being hurt or held back by this horrible word, or droves of afflicted people protesting our team name; if it was, I'd be much more sympathetic to their cause. But no, this is an agenda-driven case brought forth by a select group of people with ulterior motives. The media has gleefully picked up this story and propagated this controversy for their own benefit, while politicians have gotten involved to garner political correctness brownie points to help their poll numbers. It's disgusting. The worst part is that I don't even think this will help quell the media hatred for DS or their righteous cause to get our team name changed.

So, "yay" to the organization for doing something that from the start, appears to be well-intentioned and helpful to Native Americans. But "boo" and "screw you" to the media who've done everything possible to whip up frenzied masses who have placed pressure on the organization to act on something in response to a largely artificially-contrived controversy.

the ignorance of your own history is what bothers most native americans, the meme that " indians killed innocent women and children so it was ok to attack their villages" is not only incorrect, but offensive.

did you know custer was killed because he didnt want to attack the warparties, and made the "tactical decision" to attack the village?

The "innocent women and children" who were killed were actually not that innocent, in many cases they settled on land that had been promised to the indians, and in many cases they were actually illegally settling on that land. its not morally equivalent to kill illegal settlers who are encroaching on already diminishing lands to killing women and children because they are in the way of your stealing their resources. by purposefully settling in what was essentially a combat zone, they forfeited their "innocent" status.

The problem with american education is that its terrible when it comes to admitting the atrocities committed by americans. too many movies glorifying the "way the west was won" and not enough people willing to admit that in fact they were the bad guy, and not just the bad guys but posibly the most evil villains in history. it sort of changes the entire way you look at things. good old abe lincoln, freed the slaves, but he sure didnt like indians. andy jackson, good guy, except for the trail of tears I suppose.

if you want to know why indians dont like white people sometimes? its because too many of you arent willing to just say " yeah some screwed up stuff was done on our behalf, no excuses, we are genuinely sorry." instead we get " but indians killed some civillians too"

as for Mike, I sent several actually, warning them, but you are right they were too busy answering everyone else to bother replying to actual native activists lol, and even more funny they did exactly what myself and several others warned them not to do.

if they want real cred, they need to actually show that they are willing to do more than just write pretty letters

If you wish to create a statement for me, and then be offended by it, knock yourself out.

did you know custer was killed because he didnt want to attack the warparties, and made the "tactical decision" to attack the village?
Well, did you know that Old McDonald was a terrible speller?

Contrary to your own opinion of yourself, you're not the only person who realizes that water tends to be wet.

The "innocent women and children" who were killed were actually not that innocent,
Same bullshit excuse I'm sure the soldiers at Wounded Knee used. Bully for you.

For the sake of argument, let's pretend you're 100% correct here. That white children are fair game to be murdered because their parents took them somewhere they had no choice in. I guess the little bastards should have run away from home, hijacked a ship, and sailed back to England.

Finally, you got one right. Many don't know, or want to admit, the horrific actions committed by their race/government/ancestors. Indians included. And before you go off creating another statement for me, I'm NOT saying one justifies the other. I'm saying their isn't a race in the history of the world that is innocent of committing atrocities. Not keeping score here. I just pointed out a fact.

if you want to know why indians dont like white people sometimes? its because too many of you arent willing to just say " yeah some screwed up stuff was done on our behalf, no excuses, we are genuinely sorry." instead we get " but indians killed some civillians too"
One of the 1st steps necessary in digging oneself out of the hole they're in, is to stop spending all their time doing laps in the pity pool. As long as people cling to the victim mentality, they will never get out of their hole.

As for me, I've already acknowledged the evil of man. Saying I'm sorry, after the fact, is as useful as a fur sink liner. But if you think it'll make me a white man who doesn't deserve to be murdered, along with my family, for trespassing, then the percentage of my white heritage, hereby apologizes to the Original American percent of my heritage.

And, I accept the apology. So you can't kill me now. ;)

If you guys want to talk about the political aspects of this, or the history of violence between 'whites' (whatever that term means Ryman - because, you know, we're all alike and have committed atrocities against native americans) and native americans, take it to the Political Asylum forum, which I'll remind you is moderated just like all of our forums here.
