The thread title alone will piss some of you off.

The 2025 season has been an unmitigated disaster. It could be worse, but just barely. There isn't a Washington fan anywhere who has not felt their soul crushed this season.

It sucks. On that we can all agree.

On the other hand, it's just one season. And it's a season in which we have experienced injuries on an epic scale. In our podcast last week, I mentioned that we had had 17 starters prior to the Lions game miss significant time. That's nearly a third of the roster. 21% of the roster has gone to IR or has been lost for the year. Those aren't numbers that replying 'All NFL teams have injuries' can account for. Those kinds of numbers don't constitute an 'excuse', they represent a reality that as fans we find annoying and disappointing, but which create a situation for our coaches and the remaining players that is almost impossible to contend with.

I also mentioned in our last podcast that it's not just about those individual players. When 2 of our WR starters are unavailable and the 3rd misses time as well, and our starting QB is hurt multiple times - it isn't just about whether Marcus Mariota is a capable backup, or 'next man up' for the WR corps. It makes it very difficult to mount an effective passing attack. These guys haven't played together in live action. The injuries at WR and QB alone would make a winning record unlikely on almost any NFL team. But the injuries also change game dynamics. Playcalling has to be different, defenses don't have to worry much about the passing game and can focus on going after the QB and stopping the run almost exclusively. Our mobile QBs are now facing bodies in the backfield and crowding the line. And scoring is now a supreme challenge. We fall behind early and don't have the guns to keep pace.

We've also had major injuries on defense. Our top sack threat. A key CB. 2 of our best DE's. Safeties banged up and frequently unavailable. This year's defense, like the 2024 version, was not going to be dominating by any stretch, but now on a unit where coordination, communication, and cohesiveness is key instead you have constant change and chaos. It hasn't worked out very well. Couple a defense that can't get teams off the field and it compounds the injuries on offense, giving them fewer opportunities and less time to accomplish what is already supremely challenging.

We are all incredibly bummed and disappointed. But seasons like this happen in the NFL. All you can really do is suck it up, grind out 2025 as a fan (whether you elect to watch every remaining minute, or find somethnig else to do on Sundays), and wait for 2026.

Here's what I am not going to do:

1. Ignore other data sets. 2024 happened. With many of the same players and this coaching staff. A game away from a Super Bowl appearance. Yes - a lot of things had to go right for that to happen - but it didn't happen in a vacuum. This coaching staff and these players were a huge part of it. It should be noted that we did not experience devastating injuries in 2024.

2. Call for coaching firings. I am very skeptical that Joe Whitt Jr. is going to be a great DC for us. He should get some consideration as he has had to navigate the injuries this season just like every other coach. But I do have doubts about him as he has never (yet) shown himself to be a capable DC at this level. They may feel they need to go in a different direction after this season. I think it's likely. But these are the same coaches who performed miracles in 2024. I think, overall, we have as experienced and capable a coaching staff as most other NFL teams. Maybe better. And I'm not a subscriber to the belief that changing coaches like your underwear is the key to NFL success. People want to find blame somewhere when bad things happen, it is one of the most common human traits there is, but I'm not sure blaming Kliff Kingsbury because he can't come up with an offense that makes backups and practice squad players look like starters is entirely fair.

3. Lose faith in our GM. Again - we can't know what Adam Peters legacy will look like when all is said and done. But he's the same guy Josh Harris landed on in his GM search today as he was when he was hired LESS THAN 2 YEARS AGO. He's made some great moves and he's made some suspect ones (dare we say 'mistakes'?). That's pretty on par for NFL GMs. There is no legitimate reason to doubt the guy yet. It takes time to rebuild an NFL team.

4. Attack fellow fans who disagree or see things more ominously than I do. All of us as Washington fans have earned the right to criticise, complain loudly, cast blame, etc... so I don't begrudge anyone those things. I may even engage in my lesser moments myself. It's fine. I would just remind everyone that while it may be true that 'This team has done nothing but suck for 30 years and I am so sick of it', it is not this regime's fault or responsibility. It's really patently unfair to heap scorn on the Front Office and coaching staff for a single season of despair. That's arguably the sum total of their crimes committed so far - 1 horrific season. Maybe this will prove to be the mean going forward and the Harris group will clean house and start over again. I seriously doubt that is what happens but we will see. Until then, I'm sure the guys in the thick of all of this are just as upset and frustrated as we are. I just wish we could all take a deep breath as fans and try and keep some perspective.

I imagine my comments will piss some off because it is more satisfying to scream bloody murder. I completely get that. And I am not saying that there haven't been mistakes, misjudgements, and yes even awful performances at every level in 2025. But it all starts with our best players getting hurt. Things have snowballed, and snowballed badly. But it doesn't mean the future isn't going to be a bright one.

The best thing we can do as fans is to man up, recognize for the 100th time that to be a die-hard fan means to open yourself up to the possibility of pain, suffering, and brutal disappointment. But also to be open to the possibility things will ultimately work out and better seasons are ahead. What other choice do we really have?

Hear, hear. One for all and all for one.

Jesus Christ we have some crybabies in other threads

Well said Boone. This season has sucked. It’s sucked more than I can put into words. We all hoped they could build off last year’s success, but that hasn’t happened. It’s been a step back even if there were no injuries. The injuries just took the whole season off the track with seemingly no way to get it back on track. But I will say that the only thing worse than seeing what is happening on the field is having to deal with the aftermath. I mentioned in a thread a few weeks ago about a very loud argument I had with my family after the dallas game. It was just some dumb statements some made because they lost. As I’ve grown older, I’ve come to despise the idea that every loss is the end of the world and fixing it requires drastic changes immediately. Not everyone, including some in my own family, has come to that realization. I certainly appreciate different perspectives on thing and I realize that others see things I don’t see. But I’ve tried my best to keep things in perspective and always look for a way forward from where we are without having to start over every time there is bump or giant sinkhole in the road.

It always feels worse in the moment, and I think the fact that things went so well last season gave the fanbase this feeling that things can only trend up each season for the next decade plus, but all of us that are old enough to have lived through 30 years of Dan Snyder know that the franchise is in much better hands now, found their QB1 in the first year under new ownership and that the slow & steady build is going to be fun to watch, even if each individual game or season ends up not being so.

Great post Boone. You're the man. This is a year i kinda laugh off. The worst happened. Sometimes the cards fall your way and sometimes you fall right on your face. Man we have a franchise QB that is a winner. We will have more exciting seasons like last year and I will look forward to celebrating with you all. For this year, I guess get some young guys experience. Maybe let our O Line learn to play together and maybe upset some of our division foes. Cheers!!!

Well said indeed.

Put me down for “this team has done nothing but suck for 30 years and I’m sick of it.” It’s a little hard to be optimistic after four straight losses by 21+ points. Yes, the injuries are obviously huge, but that’s just more to the point about our miserable luck.

I do agree on points 1, 2, & 3 though. Last season was the best we’ve had in those thirty rotten years, so this group deserves a chance to get back on track. Despite it all, I still think the leadership of Harris, Peters, and DQ is good, and we should stay the course with them for some time.

It is hard to agree better times are ahead after so many next seasons, but you’re right, we have no choice but to hope so.

You need to change your name because I see nothing but a lot of negativity from you. I've been a fan for longer

I don’t think faithful means what you think it means. My dictionary says to be faithful is to be “steadfast in affection or allegiance; loyalty,” nothing in there about positivity. I can count on one hand the number of games I’ve missed going back to the 1980s—through Norv, Spurrier, Zorn, Snyder, Rivera, name changes, and more bad times than I care to list—and I’ve never quit on the team. That loyalty is faithful by definition, and if anything the fact I still care enough to get angry and depressed instead of just turning the games off and doing something else on Sunday is proof of my faithfulness.

This has been a difficult season for anyone that cares about this team. (Keeping in mind that sports is simply an entertainment vehicle for those so inclined to partake, not life and death).

This is a time to extend some grace toward those who are struggling with this reality more than we might personally feel.

I hear what you are saying Boone and I admire the attitude. But sorry I'm just not onboard. Yeah we have had injuries, did anyone notice the teams we were playing did as well? When they play backups, as Detroit did and we've faced multiple teams with decimated OLs, the drop off is negligible.

And it's not just the injuries. Players they were really counting on to play well have also played very poorly and we can't blame that on injuries. And that includes Jayden. We all know he needs to play at a high level for this team to succeed. He didn't play at that level and now has 4 injuries in 2 years, anyone who does not have concerns about his durability are not being realistic IMO.

I'm just in a totally different place than I was just 2 months ago. We seem so far away with the oldest roster that needs help at every single position group with limited draft capital.

Good stuff, Sir.

Not the season I expected by a long shot. But I still get to see my 13 year old son text his 90 great grandparents about the game each week. I got to do a father- son “Ironman” same day drive down and back to Jerry World for the game - and had a blast despite the score. And last night I saw his eyes light up when I suprised him with a Commanders Salute to Service Hoodie he had been talking about the last couple of weeks.

Not our season, but I am still gonna make memories like I have for the last 50 years regardless of the score on the field. We will have better days that we got a taste of last year. In the meantime I will continue to HTTR/Raise Hail.

Perspective ftw

Maybe a better title for the thread would've been 'Let's keep some perspective'. I certainly am not demanding anyone fan the way I do.

Honestly - I have started a couple of threads in the past month that don't add much in terms of new ideas or opinions, but were more an effort just not to have every thread with a Jonestown vibe of the worst possible outcomes and harshest assessments.

But as I said, anyone who has been a long-term fan of this team has earned their fan stripes and I don't begrudge anyone their thoughts, feelings, or frustrations. I'm certainly not calling anyone a ****y for being unhappy.

It's just so disappointing because we all thought we were past all of this. I was convinced the nights of embarrassment on national TV was over, we were an exciting team that other fans wanted to watch. Now we are an an embarrassment again.

But of course the best news is we have found our quarterback. Provided he can stay healthy I have every bit of confidence that Jayden Daniels will be a top level QB. And they have a ton of cap space.

Agree with everything Boone said except I do think Whitt has shown he can’t cut it at DC. Yes he was dealt a tough hand with all the injuries but I’m reacting more to players being out of position, hesitant to move, lack of communication and poor tackling, etc. I understand JAGs will not be able to consistently compete with the best players but that’s not an excuse for uncovered receivers, open gaps for the other teams running games and predictable schemes.

Absolutely think the future is still bright primarily because I really believe in Peters. So far the only real knock I have on him was the Lattimore gamble and I think he will learn from that. Quinn I think can do it but he also might not. At this point I hope they improve enough to be a credible team again this season but I’m also hoping AP has higher picks to work with come the 26 draft, so the losses don’t hurt as much. It’s basically being blown out every week that hurts.

It's 2023 again, that was an exhausting year where instead of wins I was looking for losses because I wanted a franchise QB. Now we have one but the reality is the same today as it was last year. We need several years of solid off-season moves to build young depth and a quality starting 22. I don't know how this staff pulled off last year but it was miraculous. I'm ok because I had a feeling we would come down to earth this year although the injuries have become ridiculous. It's unfortunate our season is over so soon, that's probably the part I wasn't ready for. I thought we would take a step back but still be competitive and push for a wild card while keeping the season interesting. I watched about 10 min of the Detroit game, just couldn't do it. I can't watch us get abused like that week after week, it's depressing.

Anyway, here's hoping we can creep into a top 5 pick.
