One thing that isn't being mentioned at all, but I think has been demonstrably better this year (including the preseason) is that the Redskins are not taking penalties. I attribute this almost 100% to coaching. No, holdings on converted third downs or long pass plays, or false starts on 3rd and 5 to make it 3rd and ten. Sure, there have been a few penalties, but nothing like we're used to.

I think this is coaching, and I also think its making a huge difference for us that no one is really talking about.

Hail.

Good point. Much better in the discipline department this year. More importantly is that when they do get a penalty, it's not at a stupid time or killing a drive

Tulane Skins Fan.... another name from days gone by. Good to see ya here.

Even the boobs in the booth commented yesterday how the lack of penalties on the Skins has helped their cause. A very pleasant improvement, and one of the things that's a trait of the better teams. Just another small step in the right direction.

It would be interesting to see penalty statistics from Shanahan's time in Denver; he seems like the type of coach that would stress penalty-free football. Rather, the type that would spend more than the usual amount of time on it (before my editing crew comes in to nitpick :)).

This is the sign of a well coached team...especially the absence of o-line penalties.

I'm really liking how this team is coming together. I still think we're missing a part or two (not to mention some depth), but at least I feel we have a chance of being competitive every week.

Hey, tr1! How are ya, bud?

They got abused in the cardinals game once their (already hurting) secondary had a few injuries. I wouldn't take the 29th ranked defense thing too seriously. They've seriously played much better than that.

They are controlling the clock, showing good time management, and not committing penalties.

They are working hard and it shows. I walk away from the games not saying 'Wow we won!', instead I'm saying 'Goddamn, they look like they actually care this year'. Their hard work in practice is translating to hard work on the football field. They're winning because they're working hard, and not giving up. Something I've been begging for over the last 6-8 years.

These are the hallmarks of a well coached team. We're not the best team in the NFC East, and we don't have the most talent. We are, however, the best coached team in the NFC east. This may not be a division winning, home field advantage through the playoffs year; but it's the start of a well run organization. Time is finally on our side.

The Skins are more discipline this year, hence why we have fewer penalties.

I have also seen players talk more about "Team" then I have in the past.

We can thank the coaching staff for this.

Shanahan runs a tight ship and it is showing.
