Pending free agent quarterback Kirk Cousins isn’t planning to ink an extension with the Redskins before the franchise tag deadline on March 1, according to Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk.

Because Cousins signed the franchise tender last season, he’d be due a 120% raise if tagged again this offseason, meaning he’d be entitled to a one-year, fully guaranteed salary of $23.94MM. As such, Cousins’ financial calculation is a simple one: not only would accepting the tag force Washington to work off that nearly $24MM total in negotiations, but Cousins can point to exact numbers in terms of guaranteed money on a long-term deal.
As Florio writes, a tag in 2017 plus another 120% raise in 2018 would equal more than $52MM in guarantees over the next two seasons, and Cousins would be unlikely to accept any figure that comes in south of that total on an extension. Plus, Cousins will probably sign the franchise tender immediately (as he did in 2016), thus backing the Redskins into a position where Cousins has nothing to lose.
Washington reportedly wants to reach a long-term deal with Cousins, but as of earlier this month, the two parties hadn’t made much progress towards an extension. At one point, Redskins management may have considered letting Cousins gauge his value on the open market, but that won’t happen now that Cousins backers Kyle Shanahan and Sean McVay are now in head coaching positions.

 
I don't disagree Ryman, but the problem is, teams can't say 'hey, now that we've got a much better roster- let's go find our QB!' It just doesn't work that way. When/if you think you e found one, better do everything possible to secure him, including overpaying if that's what it takes. Trying not to grossly overpay is probably a more realistic goal.

Seems to me it comes down to a simple equation: where on the dollar scale is the Redskins choke point? The hope has to be that the QB hasn't set his sights so high on the scale that the Redskins can't meet it in good conscience.

Same applies to us fans ... my guess is most every Redskins fan would like to see Kirk re-signed to a "market value" contract. Exactly where "market value" crosses the line to the "are you ****ing kidding me?" is going to vary from fan to fan. One man's "I can't believe they're letting him get away" is another man's "oh my god they're overpaying him so bad we'll never field a full roster again."

We're either going to have to trust that the Redskins choke point is being soundly set by professionals with the team's overall needs in mind, or decide after the fact they screwed the pooch again.
 
An interesting question to me is this- Is Gruden and McClougan's future employment impacted at all by the results of next season?

If yes, I would think that Cousins is definitely signed. If no, then they tag him or deal him, find a stop gap, and either way pick someone to groom in the draft.
 
It will really suck to have the team mismanage and lose a potential franchise QB. If I was Kirk, I might ride the tag another year just for the avg. yearly salary. It's pretty crappy though, considering the cap hit. Maybe he'd like a little sunny CA.
 
At the end of the day, had Kirk Cousins beat one of the Carolina Panthers or New York Giants, and helped qualify the Redskins for the playoffs for the second straight year, it changes everybody's outlook about where this franchise stands, and I firmly believe we'd all be sitting here with our quarterback already signed for the foreseeable future.

It's really frustrating as the needle was pointing in the right direction for this franchise and now it seems that with the Cousins situation, as well as the uncertainty surrounding many of our other free agents, we could be in a spot where we legitimately take several steps in the backwards direction.

We were seemingly out of the abyss and could very well be staring it straight in the eye in no time.

Damned if you do, damned if you don't when you are a longtime suffering franchise. Some of the fragility we've seen on the part of the players on the field on Sundays now seems to be filtering into the front office.

If you want to be paid like "The Man", you've gotta be "The Man".

#8 failed his most important test. That doesn't mean we should give up on him. It also doesn't mean our future is nothing but dreary, if we move on without him.

Colt, Nate, or Whomever, can lead us to a season without making the playoffs.
 
It's ironic that the same media members that were complaining about how RG3 was not being treated right by Shanahan when he was benched at the end of 2013 are the same ones now that are digging at the Skins for not giving Kirk Cousins enough love ❤️

From what I recall a number of media types in DC were floating the idea of trading Cousins out of town at the time to make Griffin more comfortable in his role as the starter.

If we had done that where would we be now?

RG3 would have showed himself to be a fraud as a person as well as a qb as he did in Cleveland and the Redskins would have had to draft or trade for another starter.
 
It's also possible that that unnamed drafted player would be the second coming.

Nobody knows what coulda happened.
And nobody knows what's gonna happen.
Everybody's guessing. But not everybody will be right.
 
But history is clear that good QB play it tremendously hard to find. The odds are very much against the team replacing Kirk with someone even close to as good. So even if you don't think he's the guy, odds are future potential replacements will be worse.
 
That's true, but you know something? The best GMs and execs around the league don't seem to let that bother them when making decisions.

Elway came in and made the move for Peyton Manning despite the fact Manning had a slow recovery in arm strength and velocity from the neck procedures that lead to his departure from Indy.

And after Manning had put in some great years and retired, Elway drafted Lynch and went with him and Simian in 2016.

He didn't trade two #1 picks and a boatload of others to move up and draft Jared Goff like the Rams did.

He didn't panic and trade players and picks to San Diego for a veteran like Philip Rivers or pick up the contract for Nick Foles.

Now he has come out and said the Broncos would only be interested in Tony Romo if he was a free agent and didn't require any compensation to sign him.

So, there are SOME teams out there that roll with the punches and make the most of their opportunities but don't press for desperate solutions.

Now, the numbers they are discussing are untenable. You can't pay Cousins $24-25M a year in an extended deal.

Let's put it this way, would Belichick or Elway pay a guy that is a solid, good performer top end money that would challenge what true franchise passers are making?

No.

They would work out a deal for compensation and deal him to another team that was willing to meet his contract demands.

And that may be where we are in re Cousins owing to all of the BS that has happened over the last 12-18 months.

Why not? It might limit other big name signees but let's be honest - if we don't secure Cousins this team isn't going to have a chance to consistently break .500. We aren't the Patriots. It might be nice if we were, but we aren't, and neither are a lot of other teams in the NFL. It's easy to say, if we just acted like the Patriots, we'd be the Patriots. But I don't believe that's true. The Pats are actually the strongest case you can make for retaining Cousins. He may not be Tom Brady, but the point is - you have a franchise QB under center, it can mask a lot of imperfections. You don't, and good luck to you.
 
I just don't get why people don't look at current markets and understand the market will dictate what any player gets paid. Cousins will get 24 million a year, guaranteed for three years. If not from us, someone will pay him. He will likely have a successful career somewhere...never being great for anyone, but good enough, especially with a team around him. If he goes to LA and the amp up their OL, with Gurley carrying the rock and their defense about to become of the best in football led by Wade...he can be a perennial playoff QB for the next 5 years.

To be honest, if I were Kirk, I would hope that is my landing spot...they have a better core than we do, a solid defense with one of the best DC's in history, and a young HC who will put Kirk in the same offense he's excelled in for 2 years.

I truly believe we are about to tailspin. We are trying to build this team piecemeal right now...3rd DC in Gruden 4 years as HC, the possibility of having to look for another QB...again, an offensive line that is in need of interior help at center and LG, a defense in shambles...I just can't see much hope the way we're going. I really wish we'd simply cut bait with Gruden when we fired Barry and started over, because I see another need for a rebuild in 2 years....but that's for another thread.
 
On the other hand your true belief is predicated on almost everything going south - Kirk leaving, new D.C. failing, Gruden and/or McLovin getting the boot, and you threw in Kirk strolling into Nirvana and having a great career elsewhere just as icing on the cake.

Could all that happen? Yeah - anything is possible. But that's a pretty negative scenario for a team and front office that's coming off the first couple of consecutive winning seasons in awhile.

If there's a rift at the park over if KC should be PAID or not who knows. My "guess" would be that Bruce wants to pay Kirk whatever he's asking while Mcluvs is like hell nah. Just my theory if this stuff is actually going on.

Personally the biggest question in my mind would be to ask if he wants to be a Redskin or not. Nonverbals imply that's a no imho. He knows he's got us in a corner and is pissed about the benching to RG3, or whatever. If he wants to stay make the $ work, if not then tag him while he seeks trade partners. Gives us a year to research qb's as replacement & maybe, just maybe Sudrucker is ready by then.

BTW if I was GM I'd play dirty. I'd invite all of Kirk's football camp kids to the park like a telethon type presser. Basically The kids asking "why don't you love us anymore Kirk", & "We'll give you some of our allowance if you stay" angles.
 
We're conditioned to expect the worse. Even to the point of finding fault in signing a QB whose put up probowl type numbers two years in a row. Until the team gets it right, it's hard not to think they're getting it wrong.
 
Kirk wants to be paid and has the leverage. I understand that and have no problem with him getting paid.

What Kirk needs to understand is if the Redskins spend too much then he will be like Luck. A QB on a team without the cap space to build around him.

There has to be some give and take on both sides.
 
Oh my God, I can't take it anymore. :)

This team does one thing well. One thing:

Pass the ball.

That one thing got us to slightly above average all by itself. No running game. Awful, awful defense. Just passing and we are an 8+ win team.

And we are talking about ditching our QB and, I don't know, building the ***tty parts of our team from the ground up in Year Four of our coach's tenure?

No. Keep what's good. Fix the rest. And then, just maybe, we'll be better than a 9-win team next year. Otherwise we are in complete and utter rebuild once again. You guys up for three or four years of crapitude? It sounds great now but it'll be a long couple years. And there's no guarantee we'd be any good at the end of it. This IS the Redskins we're talking about.

We've got something to build off of right now. Let's just do it.

It's time to stop ****ing around and sign the damn kid already.
