Kirk Cousins Development Tracker

Unless he doesn't produce meaningful results.

As in playoff wins. Plural.
Up to, and including NFC Championship/Super Bowl contention.

If not, it's wasted time, and money.

Stats be damned.

I don't think I've seen any one argue that the amount of money he is going to get is reasonable. But that's just not how it works for QB's. Never has. Never will. This team would have been competing for number 1 picks the last two years with McCoy under center. Kirk may not be carrying the team on his shoulders, but his play has undeniably led to wins. It's inconceivable to think that improving the team around him isn't going to lead to more wins and most likely Playoff appearances. I just don't see his signing as hampering improving the team, so to me, it is completely illogical not to sign him. I understand you want to see the whole thing busted up and starting over with the HC you approve of, but that's not likely going to happen. Redskins stigma aside, if they signed Kirk today, and fired Gruden tomorrow, you wouldn't find a single coach that wouldn't want to come here due to Kirk. Most, if not all, would see this as team with QB already settled. The luxury doesn't exist in this league of waiting to pay a QB until he Wins multiple Playoff games or a Super Bowl.

You must work for CNN.

Well, I don't watch any news to be honest, so I don't get the reference. I don't think anyone reading your posts would come away with any other conclusion. But I've been accused before of being obtuse. :)

And how many more full seasons have they been a starter, compared to Kirk's 2 ?
Super Bowl QB's don't get groomed overnight.
Besides the obvious and previous-mentioned stats, what you also look for, is an arc of improvement. And Kirk certainly has that, and every indication is, he's headed straight in the direction of those playoff-winning QB's.

all of those guys not only beat teams that they should but they win games against teams even when they possibly shouldnt. Cousins is simply not special, he is an above average guy who plays well against bad teams , plays ok against ok teams and plays like a below average player against really good teams.

You'll state how devoid of talent the team is over and over. How the D sucks butter milk up it's butt over and over, yet Cousins playing on a team with a sketchy O line, lacking a running game, and a useless D is just another guy because he can't carry the team. Do I have that right ? Yet all those other QB brought up don't have the advantage of a better team then the Skins around them ?

Minnesota finished the season with the #3 ranked defense in the NFL.
Kirk beat them and finished
22/33 66.7% 262 yards 2 TD 0 INT 110.9 Rating

Baltimore finished the season with the #7 ranked defense in the NFL.
Kirk beat them and finished
29/41 70.7% 260 yards 1 TD 1 INT 85.4 Rating

NY Giants finished the season with the #10 ranked defense in the NFL
Kirk went 1-1 against them and finished
43/70 61.0% 583 yards 3 TD 1 INT

Philadelphia finished the season with the #13 ranked defense in the NFL
Kirk went 2-0 against them and finished
32/55 58% 497 yards 4 TD 2 INT

You consider that 5-1 record and those stats against the league's top defenses, as being "below average play" ?

I don't think we have enough of a sample size to say that definitively.

I agree that he can't carry a team like this one because we have so many holes. But most of our problems are on the other side of the ball where Kirk can't do a thing!

The conference finals are this weekend and playing in the NFC side are the Packers who stand a very good chance of being in and winning the Super Bowl. Last team to beat them?

They're a good team and we whipped them!

It could be said that the Packers weren't playing their best football then. True. It happens. Just like we had bad games against the Panthers and Cards. Every team has bad games. (Super Bowl XVIII anyone? Even the best teams lay eggs sometimes in big games!)

And yes we didn't beat the Giants at the end, but that team was almost tailor made to give us fit. They countered our strength (Offense) with theirs (Defense). They spent a lot of money on their Defense and once they got the early season jitters out of the way they clamped down. Yes we played terribly, but that was always going to be a tough game for us.

Give Kirk a defense and a run game and we'll start winning those games.

From the previous page, of this thread, written a day ago.
And, as I've said numerous times, I hope Kirk is signed to a reasonable contract, and rides a path to the HOF, as a Redskin. I hope Gruden actually does win multiple Lombardi's, as the Redskins coach.
Oh, and CNN=Fake News. ;)

Not going to disagree with anything you said but one could also say that if you gave Colt (or a different QB) a run game and a defense they could also start winning those games.

At this point Kyle Shanahan is not yet the 49ers head coach and ALL of what we are hearing is speculation.

BUT, if it turns out to be true that the 49ers would be willing to part with the #2 overall pick, plus a #3 this year and a #2 next year for Cousins rights' I would do that in a New York minute.

Meanwhile, the 49ers have LOTS of cap room and Shanahan was the first OC that believed in Cousins and supported him, so going to SF would probably be something Kirk would view as a win/win.

Please. Just stop with the Colt McCoy bullshit (and I say that with love, not animosity of any kind). I like Colt, but he's not an NFL starter and can't make half the throws Cousins can. Folks want to pick apart Cousins game despite two very impressive seasons where he's shown he's a top 10 QB, but then turn around and express belief that Colt McCoy can get it done.

It defies logic.

I haven't seen anything out of Colt that makes me think he can run this Offense anything like Kirk.

We've seen a little pre-season and heard practice hearsay. But looking at his career so far he's nothing but a career backup.

With him behind centre I think we regress. Plus I for one just want continuity on Offense. I really just want this unit to grow and develop together. I want that envious chemistry you see in any of the final 4 contenders and that comes with time. Every time we start again we just delay that development. 25 years and counting!

As for Kirk plateauing at 29... why would he have plateaued? My personal opinion is that he continued to learn and develop this year and the more game minutes he puts under his belt, the more game scenarios and situations he experiences the better he'll get.

Did you see Rodgers last week? 33 years old and still just getting better! That throw!? Born of ever improving talent, confidence and chemistry.

That was the thing with RGIII. As much as I was a fan... he never seemed to improve or get better. I think Kirk has proved he can learn and grow. But with only 2 full seasons of games under his belt his experience pool is limited.

The money is what it is. It's a lot, but we have enough to pay it. For the first time in 2 decades this team is handling its cap sensibly. New philosophy, that's not going to change overnight, I doubt very much that after carefully putting us in this position Scotty and co are suddenly going to flip the script and go mad. And a year or two from now another QB will get a bigger deal and this will be water under the bridge. We're not the Texans lol

I posted these stats in a response in another thread, but it's very relevant to this one.
Compare the first 2 full seasons between Cousins and Brady, and Cousins, literally beats Brady in every category, perhaps with one exception, and does so in BOTH YEARS, and often beats him in impressive fashion.
Add to that, you can expect Kirk to get even better, since he has continued to improve, and also add the fact that his talent around him should continue to improve, and then no doubt, playoff wins will follow. You HAVE to pay the man, and keep the man, no matter what any team offers in a trade.

1st Full Season
Cousins 379/543 69.8% 4,166 yds 7.7 Avg per Att......29 TD 11 INT 101.6 Rating
Brady 264/413 63.9% 2,843 yds 6.9 Avg per Att......18 TD 12 INT 86.5 Rating

2nd Full Season
Cousins 406/606 67.0% 4,917 yds 8.1 Avg per Att......25 TD 12 INT 97.2 Rating
Brady 373/601 62.1% 3,764 yds 6.3 Avg per Att......28 TD 14 INT 85.7 Rating

in other words he had a good game against minnesota and played ok against a couple other teams , not sure why you included an 85.4 rating

Sorry, but apparently you missed the point entirely, which why I added 'or a different QB'.
The point is - With an improved run game and defense is Kirk the only QB that would have led to the Redskins having more wins.
The answer is 'no' he isn't the only one.

Well, for the past 20 years, what QB has given us the kind of production Kirk's given us?

We've had better running games and defenses at times but never got this kind of performance out of a QB.

It's taken 20 years to find a guy like Kirk but folks are now thinking we can let him go and immediately find someone better.

Makes no sense in the NFL world. Everyone here should know, without any doubt, how hard it is to find find a good QB.

IMO, we haven't had a franchise QB since #9 hung 'em up in 74. We have a chance to have that spot secure for the next 5-7 years and folks are ready to let him go.

Incredible........
