Kirk Cousins Development Tracker

We haven' had good QB play since I can remember We're getting that now and he continues to show learning and growth. Keep building around him. Unless we go in the toilet in a draft year when there is a no brainer available, it's a total crapshoot.
 
I think a lot of us, me included, get caught up in chasing the rainbow at times when looking at Kirk; “He’s no Tom Brady” or “He’s got nothing on Favre”. True enough.

I think we might be able to learn something by taking a look at some of our historical QBs. I’ll skip Billy and Sonny although they prove my point too.

Joe Theismann – 2 Super Bowl appearances with 1 win, 2 Pro Bowls and a single season MVP. He was never considered the greatest QB of his era.

Doug Williams – Super Bowl winner and SB MVP. Had a great arm but no Pro Bowls and was never considered elite.

Mark Rypien – 2 Super Bowl wins (1 as a starter), SB MVP and 2 Pro Bowls. He was never considered elite.

All of these guys won Super Bowls for us. All of them were part of the machine that Joe built here. Could they have used ANYONE as a QB here? No, these were also the right guys at the right moment. What my point is though is that we don’t need perfection; we need someone who can contribute. I think Kirk’s proven he can do that.

As the team is currently constructed we can’t simply fold our arms, expect him to carry the load and jump on him when he isn’t perfect. Yes our receivers are good but our running game is so-so and our defense doesn’t scare anyone (26th in rushing defense).

Before I even thought of putting a draft pick into replacing Kirk I can think of at least 10 other positions on this team we might need more. Let some other team chase a QB that may never come. Let's build a machine.

Cousins is not that. He's an average, maybe even slightly above-average starter. I'd put him a step above Campbell or Fitzpatrick or a guy like that. He'll start somewhere next year and with the right guys around him can win games.

Frankly, thats better than what weve had here in a long time, and if a decent contract can be worked out we should keep him. McLovin has been pretty good about putting together smart contracts so Im hopeful there. We'll see.

I think you're selling Cousins just a *little* short, not a lot, but a little. There are a lot of ways you can compare QBs - but I don't think it matters how you compare them, Cousins is absolutely above-average. If you look at QBR (perhaps not a perfect measure, but one that looks at numerous data points), Cousins finished 6th in the league in 2015. He is currently 11th in the league, and he's been much higher than that over the most recent month.

I'll never argue Cousins is the next Tom Brady (until he shows he is), but he's inarguably above average, and more than likely a consistent top 10 QB.
 
Since the YLT game, Cousins has led the Redskins to a 12-6-1 record with a 69.5% completion rate, a 37:10 TD-to-INT ratio, a 106.2 passer rating and averaged 287.5 pass yards per game.

But, on the more sobering side of stats : The Redskins have a 10-3 record when Cousins doesn't throw an interception, but they are 6-5-1 when he tosses just one pick and 0-9 when he throws multiple interceptions.
 
I think Kirk would be just fine if we had a stud at running back. We would be a contender for sure. With a stud back, Kirk doesn't need to do more than execute the playbook, and I think he does that well. He's good enough but no one is good enough without a RB. OK except Tom.
 
You can win with Kirk Cousins.

Kirk Cousins is not going to go out and do what Aaron Rodgers did for much of the past 5 years, taking a mediocre Packers team to the playoffs at 11-5 or 12-4.

But as others have indicated, that's OK.

Scot and Co. have to put a team around Cousins.

We are starting to do that with some very good young offensive linemen (Scherff, Moses, Long, even Trent is only 28), a promising young WR in Crowder, a superb tight end in Reed, and a capable back in Robert Kelley.

What we still have to do is add enough defensive players so that the DEFENSE can win some of these games and not put all the pressure on Kirk and the passing game to provide a fourth quarter comeback.

We need a much better investment in the defensive line to land an impact player that can do there what Trent does for the offensive line.

We need to get more athletic at linebacker and at safety.

Overall team speed on defense is only average.

You look at the speed of the Broncos or the Seahawks on defense and they are in another league.

At the end of the day, to win a Super Bowl the Redskins are going to have to be able to win games where Kirk Cousins or any other quarterback you choose can have a 17 for 35 game with 200 yards passing, 0 touchdowns and say 1 interception.

But we all know at present that's not going to happen.

Kirk has to throw for 250-350 yards and 2-3 touchdowns for us to win.

Except for the Raven's game, the Redskins have given up 20 or more points in each game this season.

That's not acceptable.
 
He's this generation's Joe Theismann....and there's certainly nothing wrong with that.

Pay the man.
 
Kirk has responded.

One of the benefits of prime time games is extra sound from the field.
Kirk was impressive with his vocal presence and command.

Think the national audience is now aware of some of the things we already know the guy and our team.
The Redskins are a tough out when we don't shoot ourselves in the foot.

21/30 for 375 and 3tds in 30mph winds dominant enough for ya? Cousins is a top 10 QB in the nfl. I can't believe so many folks still don't see it.

I have been saying he's a top 10 Qb in this league for a few weeks now. And he keeps getting better.
 
Now the Redskins need to be smart and quit thinking anyone can do what Cousins has done. In his past 21 games, Cousins has thrown 41 touchdowns and 12 interceptions.
Here's what coach Jay Gruden said about that last week: "We can go through the anybodies around the league the last 10 years, and not a lot can do what he's done for the last 20 games."

I read that article this morning, hard to argue those numbers.

We have to pay the man, simple as.

I hadn't realized he was the 8th QB taken int he draft! Is that why he wears the number 8?

Anyhow... I've watched him this season and he impresses me more every game. The thing I like the most about him the last two years is that he doesn't appear to take anything for granted and he learns.

Every game he seems to take a little step forwards, rarely back. He connect all over the field, he's calm under pressure, he's got over his turnover prone days, he's getting better and better at reading the field. He outplayed Aaron Rodgers yesterday, and Rodgers didn't have a bad game.

What's more this team believes in him. His teammates believe in him and how far he can carry them.

And welcome back Deep ball, and into the wind no less. I've said for weeks that DJax looked slow, that it just seemed to me that Cousins was throwing to where he expected DJax to be. I don't know if the fact he was on the money every time yesterday confirms that theory or not, but he dropped those balls perfectly for Crowder and Garcon.

I think it's safe to say we are seeing DJax's last season in the Burgundy and Gold.

I've thought he was underrated in the league for a while now, I think he's top 10. I also think he's only going to get better and as the old guard (a la Brady etc) retire he could climb that order.

Seems that we DID find our franchise QB in that 2012 draft after all... :D
 
As an addendum to the previous post...

Kirk was also just ON IT today. He simply rose to the occasion.

These are the things he's capable of. He will, like any QB, have bad games too. But as long as they are the excpetion rather than the rule, and as long as we don't overreact to them I think we're all good.

Time to do it again on Thursday with very little turn around and prep time. Gonna be difficult, and we'll be the underdogs, but if this offence can continue in this groove we've got a great chance.

Also... said it before and I'll reiterate it now... I wonder how those first couple of games would have gone if he'd have had more pre-season reps to hit the ground running for the season. If he is a QB that needs to find a groove then so be it, lets get him into that groove earlier in the seasons

We're 2.5 games behind Dallas in the division... but, and it might just be me, I don't feel that the difference between us and the 'Boys is 2.5 games worth. We could easily be matching their record or a game behind them right now. I think Dallas should be concerned about us.

But I hope they take us lightly and we burn them!
 
On lunch at work and a couple of other Keim tidbits about Cousins...

"Cousins has faced the NFL’s top-four defenses when it comes to opposing QBR: Minnesota, Philadelphia, the Giants and Baltimore. They have an average QBR against them of 54.2. In those games, all wins, Cousins has thrown seven touchdowns to two interceptions and owns a total QBR of 72.4."

Prior to the Green Bay game...

"Cousins also is making it work. In his last 20 games, he owns the NFL’s sixth-best total QBR ranking as well as the fifth highest passer rating (he's thrown 38 touchdown passes to 12 interceptions in this stretch). During that same time frame, Green Bay quarterback Aaron Rodgers is 17th in QBR and 25th in passer rating. Nobody at Redskins Park is saying Cousins is better than Rodgers. But they'll also dispute the notion that many quarterbacks could do what Cousins has done in Washington with the talent he has around him."

Ya, I'd say a fair and manageable four year contract is in order. I have no issue pinning my hopes to Kirk, he's shown me enough.
