Right now, he's a 1 hit wonder. If another team wants to pay him 80-100 mil, let them. Unless the team has an out in the 1st 2 years that doesn't kill the cap. He will fail, initially, anywhere but here. He has to be smart enough to know that. Hell, it's gonna be hard enough to succeed here. Once you're "The Man", making the big bucks, he will be expected to repeat, at least, his current half season hot streak, next year. And do better every year after that. If not, the criticism he will face won't be the cream puff stuff he's heard in the past.

Cousins progressed nicely. I thought he was a complete no-go during pre-season...but he fixed most of his weaknesses. You don't spend the top dollars unless all the tests h=have been passed. Cousins has not played a quality defense coached by a quality HC/DC. I know I'd want 2-3 games like that before I commit to 100 million! problem now is that with a QB poor draft, limited FA options, and no replacement on the roster...the team's hand is kinda forced. let us hope there are all sorts of "get out of jail" clauses in his next contract.
 
With improved play across the board, I don't see why we couldn't do as well with McCoy, Griffin, or Veteran to be named, next season.

Obviously, Kirk would have a leg up on all those options, next season.

I would franchise him if he wants too big of a long term deal. If he repeats, or improves his play next year, you break the bank if needs be.

But not yet.

That's some straight up crazy talk right there. Cousins just had the best season a Redskins QB has had since Rypien '91, and Rypien had a much better team around him. Let Cousins walk? No chance.
 
They'll pay Kirk market rate for a hot young QB, either straight up or via the franchise tag (which will be far too much for many fans either way), and then it will be up to Kirk, along with the coaches and GM, to justify it over the next few years. Cost of doing business in today's NFL.
 
The market will dictate his value and the team will pay it. Individuals can love that, like that, or hate that and it makes no difference, at all.

And considering that he plays (and plays well) the most important position in all of team sports, he should.
 
The Redskins will want him back. They'll work it out. I don't think there will be much debate about that. What the debate will be about, will be whether or not the deal was a good one.
 
And, Kirk needs us as much, if not more, than we need him.

It's in both sides best interest to for him to stay here.

It's up to us armchair GM's to debate the final result. Our conclusions, plus $1.70 will buy us a cup of coffee at 7-11.
 
the amount of teams that will be looking for a QB after this season is pretty high.

If we don't lock him up some team will make a ridiculous offer for him and we will be back in the same position we were just in 2012 when we signed TWO quarterbacks because we were so hurting for it.

I think you may be a bit confused as to the cause of the success on this team. The team is playing better because of Kirks improved play, not the other way around. There's never a sure think with NFL QB's, but this is a close as we've been in, well, ever. He's steadily improved over the course of the year, despite some glaring issues surrounding him. He has not arrived as a flash in the pan. He's put in the work, it's paying off, and there's no reason to think he's going to melt down. Kirk has all of the leverage. You have to pay him what he can get elsewhere to retain his services. Whether or not the team thinks he would be as successful elsewhere is irrelevant. The size of the contract doesn't matter. It won't be all guaranteed and, like most other QB contracts, they'll be able to get out in 3 years without much pain. Only time will tell if paying him is the right decision, but if it's a mistake, it's one many NFL teams would jump at the chance to make. Fortunately, they wont' be given the opportunity.
 
The counter argument to ascribing a large amount of his success to the talent level of his opponents is this: Our beloved Redskins have played many a season the last two decades against the losers of the league by virtue of our own crappy performance. There's been plenty of opportunity for other QB's to light it up against lesser opponents. Yet only one has walked away with numerous team passing records. I'm all in on Kirk. If he falters it will suck, but I don't think he will.

I prefer Lombardi's.

Kirk is still unproven against varsity defenses. That the fact.

I'd rather overpay on a 1 year franchise tag to better gauge his worth.

So how does the play of the rest of the offense factor in to that analysis? Does he have to maintain this same level of play despite an O-line that can't sustain blocks against a superior defensive line, or despite ineffective Receiver play? Sorry, but I don't buy that argument. Succeeding against better defenses is nothing more than the offense matching up well as a whole. He's been doing what he's been doing largely without a running game. I don't believe for a second that is sustainable long term against better opponents. We still have to fix a lot of pieces before I expect this offense, and Kirk, to be effective against a top flight defense.
 
You know as well as I do that QB's get all the credit/blame. Why should Kirk be treated any different?
