Great game by Kirk Cousins... Of course, it's pretty easy when Desean Jackson takes away two defenders. Philly was obviously not going to let DJax beat them deep.

Regardless, it was a solid game by Kirk.

I don't think it's been mentioned, but to put into perspective how great Kirk has been, he has put up all these great passing numbers in the last 10 or so games, with VIRTUALLY NO running game, to support him or play off of.
Not sure how many QB's could do what he's done, with our lack of rushing, and knowing a pass is coming, most every play.
It's like having one of those rushing attacks, where it's so powerful, like a Riggo & Hogs, that the defense still can't stop you, even when they know exactly what specific play is coming.....except instead of rushing and the Hogs, it's the Mighty Kirk and the air ball.

only 2 that I know of 1 was Payton manning but he can't do it anymore
the other is Brady who does it consistently
Marino did but never got close to a title

I wish we would have locked him down a month ago when it was clear he was becoming a great one.

Now it's going to cost us much more. But that's okay. If he keeps playing as he is right now, or if he even improves, then he'll be worth every penny.

Just think of back when Santana was drawing double coverage all the time, and we couldn't make them pay for it. I'm fine with them doubling Jackson to put somebody like Reed in a 1 on 1 with a linebacker.

Yes, Kirk was solid despite of not having Djax uncovered for most of the game against a 'weak' defense.

Think that's how it's supposed to work, good on Kirk for making it look easy.

Also would be nice to find another stud on the DL to pair with Smith going forward.

I like how Cousins has played the last two games. forget the brain fart against the iggles.

I want to see him beat a quality defense in a tight game. I want to see him carry a team when a Jordon Reed or Djax is not playing....that...in my mind...is where you invest the really big bucks. I want to see him carry a team when he is under constant pressure.

his progress this season has been impressive.

We'll have to trust McL on the contract aspect. Locking him up with whatever the market demands vs. franchising him. They'll have a better feel on the stuff we don't see. I would like to see him make more of busted plays. He had a first on a scramble if he just took off. Still a few lost opportunities out there. He's definitely come a long way. If the game continues to slow down for him, I expect that will happen.

I hate to bring this up, but what if Kirk doesn't want to come back? Is that even a possible scenario?

Some friends of mine said that he looked really annoyed in an interview where the run up to the season was discussed. Makes me concerned that he might hold a grudge.

Bird, it's not even up to him at this point.

We can franchise him if we so choose. That locks him up for at least one year.

For the record, that franchise costs us a ton--definitely not the route we'd prefer to go. Roughly $20.3 million next season.

I hear you, but I have two thoughts on using the franchise tag:

1) Would much prefer we are able to sign him to a long term deal. Finally, it looks as though we have a shot at a real franchise QB. A one year rental at $20M+ isn't really what we need
2) If Cousins doesn't want to be here and we keep him via the tag, aren't we setting the team up for drama and locker room bickering?

Again, I realize it may be a non-issue, but thought I'd throw it out there for discussion. I guess I'm too jaded a fan and I'm having a hard time accepting the team is actually on the mend.

If the Redskins want Cousins back he'll be back. That's not the worry.

The worry is how much we'll end up paying him. Honestly, I don't know what that amount should be. I'll leave that to the guy who's paid to figure that out.

1. Kirk, here's $20 million for one year. Roll the dice.

2. Kirk, here's $17 million for three years. Your call.

I'm thinking he gets a five or six year deal to lower the cap hit a bit each season and a signing bonus that is prorated for the life of the contract. In simplified language - a deal that is just a bit better than Kaepernick's or in the neighborhood of Tannehill's contract.

I'm guessing that's what he'll get. If Cousins is The Guy, McLovin won't mess around with a three year deal.

He just better not end up playing like Kaepernick ...

We all end up that way my friend, these guys just get paid a lot more to get there a little quicker.

Yes he has. But no, I'm thinking the thread has legs as long as Kirk is still in "Development" mode. At some point down the road we'll know when he's maxed out ... but I think that's a good 2-3 years down the road still.

The thread is done as far as I'm concerned. This year proved that Kirk is legit. Far exceeded the expectations of the fans, media and league. No disputing that. He is the starter without question.

The thread, I thought, was about his progress this year. Not his career progress. Plus, I don't know what you mean by "max out". Each year should be judged on its own merits as a team, and future play of Kirk is irrelevant to what he has achieved this year. He passed all the tests.

No one will catch me saying Kirk has a great year but......he can't win the big one. I hope no one is foolish enough to think we have to now rely on Kirk to put this team on his shoulders and have a "wait and see" attitude. The team proved otherwise as well. The future is now, ready or not.

As an aside.....same with Gruden. Far exceeded fans' expectations, winning the division in second year. He coached backups to the division title and brought this team together. He joins only a handful of coaches to do so, including Joe Gibbs.
