Kirk Cousins Development Tracker

Maybe Brees had a few more games under his belt by the time he was Kirk's age.

Not saying Kirk is Brees by any stretch but experience, age differential and opportunity to compete has to be considered in any comparison.

I'd be quite happy to have an older 'young Brees' type guy going forward, Kirk may never reach that plateau but no sense in saying he can't because he's some old fart with finite age limitations.

Friends, wake up.

We have it so much better than people are acting right now. What's the best a fan can ever hope for?

A great GM who can find talent all over the place.

And a HC who is competent, can draw up plays where WRs are open all over the place, and one without an ego. Shanahans and Rex Ryans have egos that can't even fit in the door. Good luck winning with that.

If the HC sucks, he'll be fired. But in the meantime? WRs are getting open. The QB is making reads. Players are put into a positon to develop.

Is there something that we are really missing right now?

Talent.

We need more of it to get a clearer picture of everything.

I think a vast majority of fans severely underestimate the damage that previous GMs/head coaches have done to this team in terms of roster management but also don't give enough credit to what the league did to us in terms of the Cap Penalty.

Bruce Allen was correct when he said that the Cap Penalty would hurt us for years down the road in terms of depth and talent.

Scotty has just gotten started, trying to dig us out of the hole.....he's probably going to need 2-3 more drafts with a great hit rate, in order to get this roster up to snuff.

I'm still not sold on Spencer Long at LG and we desperately need a Center.

Need a young stud/difference maker on the Dline and the ILB position and we all know and understand what we need in the secondary.

Alot of gaping holes to plug.....just not enough fingers and toes to stick in em yet.

I have come around on Kirk. I think the Skins can win with him. They just need to fix the rest of the offense. We still need that big bodied WR and figure out how to open holes up for the backs. Hopefully a new LG and C can be acquired in the offseason.

A run game. The team still doesn't seem to have any plan other than randomly trying out various running backs once in awhile. Last week showed a little progress in that area, which was good because we kinda needed the running game to work to close out that game. Hopefully the coaching staff has finally figured something out. We'll see.

But we'll get one. Scot and Callahan will guarantee that.

Now the current coaches and the current RBs might not be here when that happens, but it will happen.

I really believe we are in the dream scenario right now. When you have a GM that can find a Quinton Dunbar, and a guy like Fewell who can coach him up, you are so far ahead of the game that it's ridiculous. We would have been destroyed by this slew of injuries in recent years. Now we just plug and play.

I believe a GM like McLovin can make a bad coach look average, and an average coach look great.

As long as we have a HC without a destructive ego, a locker room without major drama, and a team that stays motivated we should have some serious success in the future.

I see nothing but up.

meh....if we got 6 good years outta Cousins we've done well. I don't think age is an issue at this point.

I think in direct response to an article referring to him as a 'young' QB on the same developmental path as Drew Brees, Cousins' age is a relevant detail.

well...I debated whether to make this post or not given the emotions floating on this board. yes, there is time to develop.....and there were other issues...though we must all be careful not to set a double standard. the cowboys last night executed a strategy on defense I expected: pressure Cousins. I still see him as an 8-8 type QB (i.e., there were two Matt Cassels on the field last night).

- his level of play drops under pressure

. accuracy issues reappear
. he simply does not throw well off his back foot...the arm strength isn't there
. he leans into making passes in tight coverage he ought not to make

- the comeback drives are nice but we shouldn't forget that defenses are usually in prevent schemes which makes the under passes toward the sidelines easier

- I don't know the stats but I have seen a small pattern of not audibling out of plays where the defense is obviously stacked against the play/side of the formation from the OC....especially run plays

- I'm not in the hiuddle...so who knows....but I don't see the body language on the field when things are tight that communicates "I'm in control...follow me." this may just be due to not enough time under center.

- the offense continues to struggle...IMO....with scoring (not all on Kirk...but he is the QB)

- what's the conversion ratio (to TDs) off defensive turn-overs? doesn't strike me as all that good. too many field goals or no scores. at some point...you want a QB with a killer instinct to make the game changing/momentum killing scores.

Kirk Cousins strikes me as a serviceable QB who manages a game well when provided good protection.

The Cowturds schemed a strategy last night that consistently run and pass blitzed designed to move Kirk out of his rhythm. IMO...he needs to learn how to adjust when this happens - he's not always going to have the luxury of setting and executing a full throwing motion against the better defenses.

On the plus side

- he has now set a pattern of brining his team back at the end of games...that somewhat balances the observation on leadership

- he doesn't win games (i.e., carry a team) but he seems to have passed through the pick machine stage where he can lose games

- very nice TD pass to DJAX at the end of the game

I never thought during the game that he was playing poorly. He was under pressure and getting hit constantly. He never got happy feet or panicky. He's not an elite QB that is going to be great without a decent running game and some decent pass protection. But neither are most QB's. He's far better than an 8-8 QB IMO, if he doesn't regress mentally. It's really hard to judge though, when not at the game. We can't see enough on the field to know if he's checking down too much or too early, and if the receivers are getting open but he's not seeing them. I tend to think not as I've not heard a commentator make the point that he's leaving guys open often.

you could be right Stevenaa. I'm laboring to keep an open mind. all I know is that against good defenses I haven't seen much from him all season. he's not horrible. not even bad. just not good enough to be the difference maker IMO.

if this gets down to having to build a superlative team around a functional QB....I can see that working for a while.....but not against the best teams.

I think that against good defenses the struggles are more team/coaching based than individual. In fact, I'd say his individual play has improved some against good D's, but he's not going to be transcendent. I really think the talent on the O is far worse than believed. The line get's shoved around, and either the receivers don't get good separation, the play calling really blows or Kirk is just not seeing it. I actually think Kirk's quick release makes the pass protection appear better than it is. But if they can't sustain a pocket long enough for plays to develop, we're stuck with dink and dunk. Not sure how it breaks down between the line, Kirk and the scheme. Given how poor they run block, I weight it more on the line. There's not a QB in the league who's accuracy doesn't suffer when under a lot of pressure. Now, Kirk has to learn how to make them pay. I also think Gruden doesn't scheme well against the pressure. Throw some freaking quick inside slants.

He has proven he can lob the ball in the air, and have Desean Jackson adjust to the ball and run under it... He is still a middling quarterback who struggles with accuracy and relies heavily on a short/quick passing game. Most of his passes are underneath crossing routes in the middle of the field... He threw fewer screens last night, but it might have helped slow down the pass rush had the play calling favored this. Cousins is what he is... Not everything is his fault... Gruden is the biggest roadblock to the development of any of our quarterbacks.

Interesting article from Mark Bullock today. He's not throwing Cousins under the bus, but WRs were open deep. Maybe the pass rush was too much.

Pretty damning evidence against Kirk here. Recognition and decisiveness were supposed to be his strong suits. Kinda confirms the feeling I got at several points against Carolina and then again Monday night. Kirk still isn't pulling the trigger. If he's going to make it as a starter he's going to have to develop more swagger and trust himself and his receivers on the downfield stuff.

Throw the damn ball, Kirk.

I try not to bury any quarterback based on snapshots of game film, and I hated it when people did it with RGIII.

I think Kirk Cousins last year makes these throws... He throws more picks, but he doesn't waste these opportunities. I've had the impression that the coaching staff has basically neutered him in order to cut down on his interceptions. Instead of improving on parts of his game that were weaknesses and building on what he did well, they basically told him to change his game. That's a mistake, IMO.
