Week Four update.

This one was all about the final, game-winning drive. 15 plays, 90 yards, six minutes ... clutch. The two things Redskins fans want and need to see from Kirk Cousins are 1) avoiding interceptions, and 2) coming up big in the clutch. He came through on both counts. Add to that bouncing back from a rough outing a week ago against the Giants, and it's fair to say this was a good week for the young QB.

This one wasn't about the numbers, it was about answering the bell after taking a standing 8-count last week, and then coming up big in crunch time. He earned himself some cred yesterday--certainly with fans and media, but far more importantly, in the locker room.

Perhaps I should point out that the last time our GM had the first pick in the draft he used it on Alex Smith. Had the Niners been a .500 team he would've been stuck with the "shittier" Aaron Rodgers. For every Andrew Luck there's a Sam Bradford, David Carr,Jamarcus Russell, Tim Couch. Of all the elite QBs, only Peyton was a #1 overall (unless you consider Eli elite).
I'm not unsympathetic to the notion of hoping to lose to improve draft position, but our GM's greatest strength seems to lie in finding gems throughout the draft rounds.

Draft position, 99% of the time, is completely irrelevant.

Good/great, All-pro, HOFer's come from every round, at every slot, every year.

Many, aren't even drafted.

Back on point; If Kirk is to flip the script on his reputation, yesterday was a brilliant contribution to doing so.

I find it useful to divide the season into four 4 game sections and evaluate those in isolation. I've heard teams tend to do that themselves...

Cousins is 2-2 with a really tough part of the schedule coming up... He and the Redskins have exceeded my expectations, so I give him a solid "B" for the first 4 games (quarter of the school year). 2-2 without DJax and getting a win against a division opponent is a solid start to the season.

The negatives are few... He had some bad passes yesterday, and even his clutch drive had a few scary moments of throwing behind receivers (which could've been picked if Biggers had tighter coverage) and into double coverage on the final TD. However, I couldn't really stand when people nitpicked Robert and I won't do the same here... Cousins has been excellent on 3rd down, which shows great progress by him and the offense. He has taken advantage of some really solid OL play, but he has to take a huge part of the credit for keeping the Offense on the field for a league leading ToP... Cousins had a fine game overall, bouncing back from last week's disaster. Last drive of the game he was further shorthanded when JReed was breathed on and had to exit the contest. Overall, this was encouraging.

Pierre Garcon was a big man among little men today... Hmm, I may have to hit Spinfire for lunch today.

Clearly too early for any pattern to emerge. As his last 2 games were, his worst, and his best.

2nd quarter of the season will be tougher. Much tougher.

We've got 3 games the "experts" will give us zero chance of winning. @Atl, @Jets, @Cheatriots
And 1 we better ****ing NOT lose. Tampa at home.

The 2 most important are Atlanta, and Tampa. NFC

I'm not trying to be easy on the kid but the F- performance came against a division rival in their house after a short week.

He needs to improve, no doubt, but I think he's showing some signs. Doesn't let a horrible performance like the Giants game ruin his confidence. That is critically important.

The current team is quite capable of delivering a premium draft position whether you cheer for it or not so don't worry, enjoy the moment.

If they actually do come along over the current and next few years then it's up to our decent GM to find that talent at whatever draft position we have.

If we currently do not have a real QB on board, the search begins this off season, no reason to expect otherwise regardless of record.

If we really flounder badly enough for three years, as you want it to, what makes you think that our precious GM will still be around, let alone any of the current coaching staff?

glad we won...but LMAO just the same. memory can be selective:

- iggles without starting offensive tackles

- iggles without starting CBs

- inability to score TDs on multiple drives (e.g., first and goal from the six)

- recurring theme of being out coached or under-incentivized in the second half

- last minute drive was time (well over 6 mins when it started) and penalty aided (big time). it's not like the team was looking at 1:30 on the clock and had to depend on Kirk to "matriculate"

- offensive/defensive kaka the entire second half until that last drive

happy with the win? you betcha. did it look like a master in control? no. not really. but it was good enough which is an improvement over the last couple years. do I still believe we are done for if the opposing team builds an early lead? yup. do I think we have faced a number of teams plagued by average to poor Quarterbacking - other than the gints? yup. do I think the defense is still the key to success thus far? yup.

so.....it's a good thing we won. some of us depart protocol when it comes to perspective.

I say that because I don't see anyone suggesting we are the best team in the league, but pleased with obvious progress. I know you love Chip Kelly, but to say they were depleted while ignoring our injury list sure does appear to be distorted perspective.

like I said - perspectives differ. not sure where the best team thought came from since that wasn't alluded to in my post. progress where? that is an empty statement without qualifiers. 2-2 clearly suggests improvement in some areas and problems in others. I have been optimistic about the defense since preseason. the offense has been spotty, disappears in the second half. that's reality. the running game, take away Thompson's one run yesterday, averaged 2.7 yards. not undercutting the giddiness and positive vibes....just sharing a dose of reality. up to everyone to individually manage their emotions.

I'm not sure about this, but I think the Redskins might actually have had more starters out than the Eagles. Both teams had plenty of injuries.
