Kirk Cousins Development Tracker

Cousins contract is up at the end of this year and he has not been extended or offered a new one as of now.

Griffin had his extension picked up but he is NOT going to be coming back after this season.

Nice post, Knightingale... I agreed with much of it. I think some folks are viewing my posts as "negative" against Cousins. I'm really not negative here. I'm just saying that I'm not impressed yet.

Cousins & Gruden will define how I feel about them the next 6 weeks. The ultimate verdict will come Tuesday morning after the Dallas Monday Night game...

To expand on your post TR1 and steal your format :p

- I think Gruden is safe for 2017 to be honest. I think the amount of injuries we have gives him some leeway as long as the team 'fights' as the season goes on and doesn't just quit. That last Shannahan year everyone just quit down the stretch. As long as this team is fighting, even if losing, then I think he's pretty safe. Also... who the heck would we get to replace him? Who want's to come here? I suspect McCLoughan knows as much and wants to make this place a more attractive coaching destination before he replaces Gruden.

- Griffin is GONE! Unless... Another team makes a stupid offer for Cousins and McCoy. If they walk I could see RGIII still being here. But in that case we'll most certainly be drafting a new QB. In some cases the worst case scenario becomes if Cousins finishes the season strong and makes a good case to go into Free Agency sought after by some of the other clubs desperately in need of a QB. In which case someone will overpay and we SHOULDN'T match it. But that's all hypothetical worst case. I think RGIII is out of here.

- Kirk.... as above. LOL I'd hope we could keep him around on a short contract, maybe a year or two on a price that doesn't break the bank. Maybe 3 to 4 million dollars a year. Give him the money that RGIII had the last few years. I certainly don't think he's a $16M a year QB and I don't think with McCLoughan in charge we're stupid enough to pay that money for him anymore. I do believe we've turned that corner at least.

- The O-Line needs time to be healthy and grow together. Wouldn't be a bad thing either to draft some more in that area this year and shore it up. I'm hopeful this might be a hallmark for our team for years to come if we play our cards right.

- Agree about the Defense. More draft picks needed here to shore up the line (Hatcher ain't getting any younger!) and fix the secondary. Some of the improvement is smoke and mirrors, We're not bad now, but we have some old guys out there who won't be around when this team (Hopefully) gets good in the future. So not only do we need depth, but I think we need to be thinking about where we'll be two or three years from now and that means replacements for Hatcher and Hall etc. Lots of work to do here I think.

- Special Teams are much much better. It's amazing what a difference a good kicker makes. LOL In many respects I think that this area will be helped with the people we draft to fill the deficiencies on Offense and Defense. As long as we draft players with an eye on whether they can help on Special Teams too. I think we did that successfully this year with Crowder.

- Offense is much like Defense. It's not bad, but we really need to address two fronts. Fragility and Age. I was down on Reed until this week. Knew he was great but thought he was a liability as he was never on the field. But after Sunday I just don't think you can afford to get rid of him. He's a worry though. Again here it's not just a case of where our holes currently are, but where they're gonna be. I think DJax is gone after this year (I think we'll trade him for hopefully something useful!) and I suspect Garcon is gone too. As will be Roberts. Not sure on Grant. It also wouldn't surprise me if Morris is gone too, leaving us with Matt Jones and a gap at Running Back too.

There are two things to consider when talking about Kirk Cousins contract...

1) The Redskins were going to offer $16M for Robert to be the starting QB in 2016...
2) The Franchise tag for Cousins will probably be about ~$24M in 2016...

For the Redskins to make it work, they'll have to guarantee Cousins gets ~$24M in bonus/guarantees in 2016. The Redskins will try to counter with the $16M number that they would've had to pay Robert. Maybe they come up with something in between if they add years to the contract. Regardless, it's likely Cousins gets in guaranteed dollars the amount of the Franchise tag if he stays in Washington. Only way we get less than that is if he hits the open market and gives us the opportunity to match.

Anyway, the 5th year option on Griffin does help them a bit in the negotiations if Kirk Cousins wants to stay here more than just a year.

Paying QBs in the NFL is pretty expensive...

TR1 quote:
"Sorry to go beyond the Kirk aspect of it, but I think there's a valid point in who we've beaten and who we haven't beaten."

Beg to differ TR1. Its not really a valid point at all. You can only play the games the schedule gives you to play. Sorry you can't jump to the weak teams first or last or whatever....you get the point don't you?

Add to that the fact that regardless of who we play when, that for this year you can win the division playing nothing but teams with losing records. Ignore that if you want TR1, but its staring you in the face. I don't give a rat's ars who we play, as long as we can stay in the hunt for as long as possible, build upon the successes (regardless of who we play), and hope that at the end of the season, we are playing for the division in the last game. Incredibly, it may only take 8 wins. Who doesn't see that as a feasible outcome? It can happen. Not saying it will, you have never seen me post a prediction for a Redskins game, never.

Remember the champions are the teams that beat the losers when they are supposed to. They count just as much in the standings.

Why do we have to keep either one of them or pay them to a long term deal? Kraperneck just got a VERY nicely structured deal and could be released this season with minimal hit. It happens.

I think I explained it in the other post in this thread... Kaep got $26M guaranteed... They've already paid him like $20M and if they cut him this offseason they have $7M in dead money. RGIII seems like a bargain at $16M. It was nicely structured from Ron Jaworski's point of view... I'm not sure the 49ers are getting their money's worth either.

Would you stay? After they buried you on the bench and the lack of love you feel from the organization, would you stay?

It will depend on the market for the player... and who the new coach is (whether the coach likes that player or not). I'm assuming Gruden won't be here next year, but if they win it's possible Gruden & Cousins are here next year.

If Cousins plays well and is worth the $16M that RGIII would earn, we won't get a hometown discount. We'll have to franchise and/or negotiate based on franchise tag dollars. We could also franchise tag him with a non-exclusive designation or maybe even transition tag him. I think the transition tag next year will be close to $20M though. QBs aren't cheap, even mediocre ones.

I don't assume he won't be any more. I am not a fan (not really relevant) but I just don't think they let him walk out the door at the end of the year.

My question was really about Robert. The 9ers didn't get their moneys worth fully but Robert won't be back. There is no way he comes back.

Only way Robert comes back is if one or all of the following happen:

1) New coach wants Robert to start
2) Kirk & Colt crap the bed in 2015
3) Kirk & Colt go to other teams and Robert is on a one year deal while new coach grooms the rookie.
4) Robert gets injured and is unable to pass the physical in March.

I think what happens is all QBs are gone and a new coach gets a veteran to play QB (like a Grossman)... Prepare for that. :)

ehh...back to the same well. everything good and bad abt Cousins was on display last Sunday. Everyone has a pov and has invested emotional energy in it....so this is a feckless adventure in some respects.

from where I sat..watching that game...I saw all the same things that have been problems for Kirk all along. he's where I thought he was preseason - a decent QB who is 8-8 material. someone good defenses will always exploit when the crucial mistake is made...when the inevitable inaccurate passes occur. there's a reason the Gints take him to the cleaners every game - they know the patterns and they are coached to take advantage.

there is the hope that Kirk overcomes his deficiencies. that's up to him and capable coaching.

in other depts.: Griffin is done here Smooty. no way EITHER side can live with his coming back next season. what's going on now...aside from the money driver...is frankly rather bizarre.

I agree with everything you said... My only caveat is that there is a reason McCloughan signed the 5th year option. I wanted it to happen because I thought they were actually going to give Robert a shot at being the starting QB. Of course, the concussion impacted things quite a bit, but it's been obvious for a while the coach just doesn't like him.

However, the very slim chance they get a new HC who has the ability to rebuild might want McCloughan to draft a QB & then use the 1 year investment in Griffin to make up his own mind about RGIII... All this is completely unlikely, but I would never say impossible. I take that back... Beating Patriots in New England in 2 weeks is impossible.

I think we have a great chance to beat the Patriots. That is, unless they lose this week to Miami. Then we'd be in trouble.

I do believe they will lose one of the next two games.

Getting healthy would help us a ton right now. Culliver, Licht and Desean. We need all three.

As all three QB's are UFA's this year my money is on them bringing Colt back at a slightly bumped rate. If Cousins impresses enough over the latter half of the year then some other team is gonna offer him stupid money which he'd be wise to accept and we'd be fools to match.

RGIII is gone. I think another team will pick him up to be a backup with the hopes they can rehabilitate him.

Which leaves us with the draft and the need for a veteran QB who knows Gruden's system (because I think he's here at least another year. I think McCloughan is patient and understands the need for stability) which leaves us getting McCoy back for a year while we groom a rookie.

If Gruden goes and all three QB's go, then we're essentially back to where we were a year ago. I really believe that Scott has a longer term endgame.

None of those QBs will be on our roster next season. Maybe McCoy if he agrees to be a #3.

I don't see how you state this so emphatically. I think it's highly possible that not only Cousins, but McCoy is back as well, particularly if they aren't dazzled by any of the next crop of college QBs (which will be one of the weakest classes in years). You guys listen to each other too much. I think the coaches have a lot more belief in those two than fans might imagine.

Boone I think we can make an interesting fun contest out of it. You know, each member can choose from 0 to 3 how many and which qb's they keep. There is such a wide array of predictions on it (not just opinions). For me I think at least one of Kirk or Colt will be here. Hard to believe they would keep Kirk though if we end up with 3 wins. I find at least there is something to be somewhat excited about this season, at least its not the total debacle chaos it was last year.

My opinion is my own, I promise.

I think we can all agree Griffin is gone, right?

I guess when I'm talking about the other two I'm just expressing my own hopes. If we continue to plod along year after year mucking around with QBs who should be backups somewhere it's going to be one long season after another.

Do you listen to Cooley on 980 Henry? I'm not saying he's the voice of God by any means, but if you listen to Cooley, a lot of what the fans see when it comes to what's happening on the field, particularly relative to the QB, is wrong. For example - fans beat on Cousins frequently for throwing behind Pierre Garcon. But according to Cooley, the throws are where they are supposed to be - the error is with Garcon who is not running deep enough routes repeatedly on out plays. That's just a small example.

I'm not saying fans are stupid or can't see. He makes mistakes - as all QBs (especially those with limited starting experience) make. But Cooley's assessment of the level of Cousins play is nothing like most fans. He's just one assessor, but he's an assessor who knows a lot more about what is supposed to be happening on these plays than we do. And whether he's 100% correct or not, I think his overwhelmingly positive reviews of Cousins demonstrate that what fans think and what players/coaches think are not necessarily in sync whatsoever.
