Joint Statement From Redskins/Cowboys

Maybe. But don't dismiss the possibility of it being dumb luck either. Besides, this saga has a ways to go yet, it would appear. Final report card may or may not tell the tale.

Naw, I am giving Allen the benefit of the doubt here and ruling out dumb luck. I think as Redskins fans we are so shellshocked from a decade of piss-poor management by Snyderatto, that when someone does something GOOD in our front office, we tend to meet it with disbelief. I think they knew exactly the different ways this would play out, and made the move knowing the worst case scenario. They might have even planned for a WORSE scenario than this one, and still have been okay with it. Maybe they were high-fiving when the penalties were announced because they missed a few players. Tom said they cleared $60M in salary...could have been a lot worse.

There's no question the organization has made more good moves the past couple years.

However, there have also been plenty of Snyderatto type moves made by Shanallen. That it indisputable. Don't get me wrong, I'm not longing for a Return of The Bugeye, but I'm not gonna overlook ignorant decisions just because a different sheriff is in town. The final chapter of the salary cap isn't written yet. And, we fans will NEVER know, who shot John.

Which moves are you referring to?

Possibly the trade for McNabb, but I supported the move then and I still say it was a gamble the team had to make. We needed a QB; Shanahan thought he could win now (and if McNabb had been worth half a crap we might have). Jammal Brown has been injured; but reports are he's looking really good this offseason. We'll see the true value of that move this season IMO.

I don't think there's anything that this FO has done that can be classified as a "Snyderatto move." The man looked at a team with an empty cupboard across the OL and DL and drafted THREE PASS CATCHERS in the 2nd round. Three! Our DL could consist of Jason Jones & Calais Campbell with Matt Forte to replace Clinton Portis. But....Snyderatto happened. And that's just ONE draft!!

Aside from McNabb (which I think was absolutely, positively and in all other ways a Snyder/Cerrato type move) I'd say bringing in the best RB corps of 2006 to try out for the starting spot. Old WRs too. Giving Joey Galloway playing time ...

Much, not all, but much of 2009 was very Snyder/Ceratto-smelling.

Since then I would agree with you.

Well, since 2009 was under head coach Jim Zorn, the hiring of which was the most Snyderattoiest move of them all, I would agree with you. :)

Look - Shanahan came in with 4 draft picks to work with in 2010. I don't think any of those RBs were ever in the long-term plans of the organization, but the Redskins hadn't taken a RB in the 4th round or earlier (EDIT: earlier than the 4th round) since Betts, and the cupboard was bare (I forget the actual round, but they hadn't drafted an early-round RB in quite awhile).

McNabb - eh, that's going to be a polarizing move. I still think it could have worked out better if McNabb wasn't so headstrong.

I would kindly thank you to stop trying to cloud the issue with facts. :)

But I think you know what I meant.

Shanahan came in with more than four. He entered the draft with four.

I'm done talking about it. :)

No Lanky, Shanahan came in with 6 draft picks and traded 2 of them away, I believe.

Right, 6 picks, I stand corrected. However only one in the first 3 rounds; the 3rd round pick was used on Jeremy Jarmon, but before Shanahan got there. Still not a lot of ammo for all the holes.

I can't fault them for the McNabb trade - although a 2nd & 3/4th seems pretty high in retrospect. And Brown was also a need-based move but I believe he was traded for a 2011 pick after the 2010 draft.

And to honor my friend Ryman, it was a Snyderratto move to switch to the 3-4 without the proper personnel in place. ;)

I have to agree with Lanky on the moves made by Allen here. As more of this story unfolds, it just appears more and more likely they were preparing for the worst while swinging for the fences.

We now have half of the Cap hit accounted for and we are better prepared to handle the other half next year. I can only imagine if we didn't have that space last year. Would we have Cofield? Bowen? Wilson? Those players are a part of our core on a defense that was 100% better than the previous year.

Call it dumb luck if you want, and prior poor management souring us aside, moves were made by Allen that put us in a position to handle a $36 million hit when the Cowboys are having a difficult time handling their $10 million hit. Makes me feel comfortable with Allen's work here.

We have entered the 3rd year of the Shanallen regime. I was not happy with the trade to acquire RG3 and several other moves along the way, but it looks like we are on the cusp of competing...of something truly exciting. I have to think they are on to something here, Shanahan and Allen seem to make a good partnership in regards to the whole picture of football operations. I have to agree with Lanky. I think Allen has known what the options were all along. They may not have worked to our advantage along the way, but they seemed prepared for the "surprise" hit from Goodell.

If we are granted some sort of compensation from the NFLPA suit, I will call it a bonus, especially if we will not be penalized another 18 million next year. At this point I just want Mara and Goodell with egg on their face. No matter what we are still in a position to move forward.

Im pretty sure we had a first and a second.

Well if you're looking at the price tag in retrospect, then why wouldn't you look at the trade itself in retrospect as well, hence how can you NOT look back and see the trade itself as a mistake, considering the outcome ?

I mentioned that - they traded it for McNugget. I can't fault them for that...could have been a great move, it just didn't work out.

Yes, I understand the irony of looking back at a move and not faulting them for it, but thinking the cost was a little high. Hindsight is 20/20, and at the time, I loved the move for McNabb. Looking back they overpaid a bit, but it was a gamble. And gambling for a franchise QB is a move I will support 7 days a week & twice on Sundays.

Yep, well said. If this cap hit had happened all at once in the 2011 preseason, we would not have all of those guys. We may not have any of them! And great point about the Cowboys - their piddly $10M penalty has them in a bind, while we took the $18M hit in stride.

My posts have nothing to do with looking back or hindsight. It looked like a Ceratto-type move at the time it was made. Just as much as it does now.

Cerrato would have given 3 firsts and a second!

Disagree Henry. I didn't want Mcnabb, but only because I always viewed him as a prima donna quick to lay blame anywhere but on himself and who showed weakness whenever on the big stage. But given his pedigree and accomplishments prior to coming to DC we paid what would have been a reasonable price to obtain a franchise QB. That it turned out he was washed up or perhaps ultimately was the product of Reid's system vs. his own talent was unfortunate. But I think it was more a matter of poor talent/character assessment than the kind of lame-brained idiotic over-spending desperate reach we became accustomed to seeing with Snyderatto. I know you won't be convinced but that's my assessment.

I'm really going to let this go now. :)

Think happy thoughts ... think happy thoughts ...

McNabb, one of the most overrated QB's of this era, was most definitely a Snyderatto type move. I remember many wondering if it wasn't Snyder's insistence that made it happen.

Did Snyderatto ever bring in a more inept QB than John Beck?

Eh, also a QB that got to 4 straight NFC Championship Games, and put up solid numbers. Also a good fit for the Shanahan offense, if he could have been bothered to learn it. No, this was not a Snyderatto move. A Snyderatto move would have been to sign Jeff George. Oh wait...

Did Snyderatto ever bring in a more inept QB than John Beck?

Shane Matthews? Danny Awful? Patrick Ramsey? Have you blacked out the Spurrier era?

With all due respect, Beck was the worst QB we've had here since Tim Hasselbeck.
