Joe Barry Report Card

The defense did play well yesterday. They were helped by suspect playing calling by the Ravens. They pulled one of our tricks and abandoned the run.

I still wonder what it would be like to see someone like Phillips could do with the players we have.

...why abandon the run? That's two weeks in a row for opponents that mysteriously stopped using it. West averaged 8.6 yards a carry on 11 carries. Browns helped out a week ago by going away from Cromwell (7.8 yards a carry) on 15 carries. Ravens were down by six and didn't score a point in the second half - they had time. As long as teams don't think 7 or 8 yards a carry isn't good enough the Redskins will continue to be a 'success' against the run. And Baltimore really had nothing going thru the air (210 yards passing).

The Defense did play better - finally, Barry has started to grasp putting players in positions where they can succeed works better than trying to force them somewhere they won't. Playing guys who are playing better more than they guys they want to play better. Jenkins > Hood all year from the middle of the line. So finally getting Ziggy to the outside where he can play and leaving Cullen in more often because he can push the line. Much better pressure on the QB but how much better against the run, it doesn't look like that much. D came through when they had to and held Baltimore off for the win.

They held on third down, I think that was really the key - Ravens 3 of 15 on third - that's outstanding. And not killing themselves with penalties.
