Jason Wright to leave Commanders

What I thought would happen all along although I’m surprised it has taken this long. I’d be curious if they view it more as a response to poor performance or because he’s so unpopular among the fanbase?

I think it’s both. I’m sure they have heard from the fan base and also probably saw he gave nothing of value from their side. I want all traces of the previous regime gone. Nothing to remind us of that horrible time.

I got to thinking about this yesterday, as far as how long it took.

You wonder if Harris and co wanted to get the football side addressed and rolling before they focused on the business side. Did they make the calculated decision to address the on field product, THEN address the behind the scenes stuff.

1. The job is more desireable now than it was a year ago. No i'm not saying that people will be turning down the Team President role, but this team has now become a desired destination.
2. Would it be too much to overhaul BOTH sides of the business?
3. Does it make more sense to have established Adam Peters as 'the guy' on the football side, so the Team President is walking into a sitatuion where they are ONLY focused on the business side?
4. Where do we stand on the Stadium deal, and how much of that includes wright? We have NO idea where the stadium deal stands at this point. Wright may be a major part of that.

Don't get me wrong, i would have been fine with Wright being jettisoned on day 5 of this transition, though (as i've stated multiple times on the Blind Pig Podcast) I do wonder how much of his blunders were him, and how much was the effect of Snyder / Rivera.

It is possible that Wright like Rivera deserves some credit for keeping the ship nominally above water. It's also true that neither can claim many important victories under their stewardship. Rivera snuck into the playoffs with a losing record in his first year. Wright? Didn't replace the lost sponsorship, presided over a stadium that became a national punchline for its maintenance failures, failed to pull off the pop and circumstance events, and like Bruce Allen before him, couldn't get the new stadium deal done.

So, it's hard for Wright to name anything to hang his hat on. It's possible it could have been worse without him. I'll give him that, but that doesn't make me or the fanbase embrace him or feel grateful. We saw the failures. We don't see him sticking his thumb in the dam and how he prevented the valley from getting flooded.

Hell, that's not even true. The valley was flooded. We lost tens of thousands of Redskins' fans over his tenure. The carnage was massive.

Well, that was my attempt at offering Wright a bon voyage. Not really successful, but watching the last of Snyder's fleet sink to the bottom of the ocean evokes more of a "good riddance" than a "thanks for the memories" That's probably true for the captains of those sinking ships, too. This could not have been a fulfilling or fun job for any of them. In the end, they couldn't overcome their circumstances. It's very likely no one could have, but let's raise a glass anyway. Bad memories are memories, too.

So long Wright. I think you tried your best.

I think Jason Wright is a good guy. But the league really set him up for failure, supporting putting someone with very scant experience into one the most challenging front office and ownership situations on the league. I don’t think the results are all that shocking. I hope he learned from his time here and that he gets a much better situation at his next stop.

I think he was severely hamstrung.

First off, I think it's known ( i may be wrong) that he was a plant by the NFL. This happened as Dan Snyder was about 1/3 of the way down the hill on his discent out of ownership (i personally belive the NFL orchetrated A LOT of failures over the last 5 years with the intention of getting Snyder out). Does anyone believe at all that Snyder actually gave Wright any real ability to be effective? It would not surprise me if we see a 30 for 30 on Dan Snyder in a few years and its reported that he was actively sabotaging Wright and Rivera in all of these major decisions. Again, not defending the guy, but I also doubt we're hearing the whole story.

I don’t know Derek. My sense the last couple years with Snyder was that he was totally checked out. He had a lot of things to worry about from a business, PR, and legal side and probably knew the time was coming for him to move on. The totally lame effort on the name change front speaks to just how detached and ambivalent he was. I never got the sense he was micromanaging Jason Wright. I think Wright was completely in over his head and I’m not convinced Snyder had much to do with it. Didn’t help obviously but…

Just my sense, could be totally wrong…

Fair, but I think one of the biggest issues we have over the Jason Wright tenure is the name of "Commanders."

I am absolutely convinced that Snyder had that name picked out before they even announced that they were changing away from Redskins. The 2 years in between with 'fan engagement' was a dog and pony show. That the name had already been determined. IF that's the case, I can't hold that against Wright. I CAN say it was a joke to have all the fan votes, and polls to get the fans input, but I can't blame Jason if Snyder pre-determined Commanders, and he was handed a rotting piece of fruit.

Hell I thought he was let go awhile ago, maybe it was a dream.

I think it was just the normal course of business. Wright was in an immensely tough situation under Snyder and I'm sure hamstrung along the way. And a lot of what he had to do, was just to re-set and set-up a new baseline for the business side - set up an actual HR dpt, overhaul the internal structure, remove any bad apples left, refine business side processes, etc.

I don't think he was as bad as some speculate. Harris knows business, if Wright was truly junk - it would have been really easy to dump him sooner off the bat like the medical team, Joey Blagovich, Julie Donaldson, etc. So, I think he was kept around because he provided some value. And now, he felt it was the right time to bring in his people. And even then - it's not just a cut all ties and go NOW. They are keeping him around for whatever their transition looks like.

That’s a big reason why Wright insists the broader story of his hire — and that of Donaldson and head coach Ron Rivera — is about a shift in the franchise’s direction.

“That signals a new change and something different that also, frankly, is good for business,” Wright said. “Because we know when you have more diverse leadership teams, you make better decisions.”

Wright was aware of Washington’s reputation when he began interviewing for the job at the outset of a courtship with Dan and Tanya Snyder that he described as “swift, but in-depth.”

“I don’t know how many hours I’ve spent with Dan and Tanya — lots,” Wright said with a laugh. “Lots of hours, lots of hours talking, lots of hours talking over Zoom, in person once we all tested [for the coronavirus].”

Those conversations weren’t about the fan experience or finances. They were about core values, and Wright soon learned he shared the same vision as the Snyders on topics like inclusion, transparency, trust, openness and accountability. They also talked about what those mean in practice, and how Rivera was instilling those very things on the football side.

“We found that we had a ton of alignment — a ton of alignment,” Wright said.
“And we also asked each other hard questions, we asked each other provocative questions. We talked about our past mistakes, we talked about things that we wish we would have done differently. We talked about areas of weakness. And that sort of transparent conversation, rooted in values, gave me a ton of confidence, as much as you can have walking into any role like this.”

Dans always been about the inclusion and transparency, and trust, and openness, and accountability.
