According to Parcells, he had a 3rd-round draft grade, and we took him at 42nd, with Kenrick Ellis and Paea still on the board. Oh well...guess I'll take a wait and see approach with this kid, but not too excited about the pick.

Heard a discussion on 980 to the effect the Skins were looking to take him at 49, but that 2 other teams were "definitely" planning to take him between the Skins 41 and 49, so they grabbed him up. They talked about the best part of Jenkins' skill set being his versatility within the 3-4 system...that he can play inside (maybe even some NT?) as well as outside techniques as a DE.

Has me smiling frankly. As much because of the player himself as because the Redskins are actually drafting specific KINDS of solid, character players to fit specific niches.

Players that actually fit into a grand scheme. What a concept. :)

That makes me feel better about the selection, for sure. I am rooting for the kid!

Pick react from some doofus goes by "Om":

The Redskins continue to give every indication that the Shanahan/Allen Era signifies a sea change in how the team does personnel business. Again eschewing sexy in Round 2, they opt for size (when is the last time a high-round lineman pick was not a shock in Washington?), consistency, production and character over flash and attempts at instant gratification. The steady Jenkins almost surely becomes a regular rotation from opening day, and barring injury or developmental hiccups adjusting from a 4-3 DT at Clemson to a projected 3-4 DE, takes ownership of a starting DE slot by midseason and never looks back. The Redskins will hope that access to an NFL training table and regimen will quiet any concerns over stamina, and that he will develop enough as a pass rushing threat to obviate the need to spell him on passing downs.

After looking over his profile more carefully I think I've figured out what might have motivated them to take him where they did. Jenkins had an insanely low number of reps at the combine, i.e. only 17 compared to about mid to high 20's for most DT's. In fact, it looks like he was dead last. So I think their thought process was that if he had the kind of production he did in college without much strength, that he could perhaps be a monster after an NFL weight program packs some muscle on him.

Personally, I'd rather we'd just taken Paea who's already strong as a bull. However he is overcoming the knee injury and perhaps isn't quite the size we were probably looking for.

In that light, Jenkins seems like a bit of a risk to fall short of being a star player but probably also is a low risk of being a bust.
