Item Number 1 on the Agenda for new GM: The Redskins need an Identity

Just watching the presser, he made one comment that I really liked and goes along with what people have been saying here. I'm paraphrasing, but when asked about the draft he says he wants to get the best football player and he doesn't necessarily look at need for a team. The reason? Because those good football players are going to help you win more games in the future.

but he IS the F.O. For all intents and purposes, it's his building now. Snyder just pays the rent. He is going to be the one building that F.O. It's kind of hard to build a better F.O. to bring in a new GM. That makes no sense. He's got control over Ashburn... HE is the change to get rid of the toxic F.O.

Maybe. I am with Tr1 here in the Wait and See Camp. We've been promised similar things before and Danny just can't help himself. I hope it works this time, I really do. This cat seems like the real deal to me.

By comparison to the smug, oily appearance and evasive non-answers of Bruce Allen, and the rambling, under-prepared and generally uninteresting questions asked by the majority of the reporters in the room, Scot McLovin stands out by a considerable margin as an actual grown-up human being.

McCloughan is on the w/ Kevin Sheehan right now. They asked him about Robert and he started off saying he hasn't developed a complete opinion, but did say...you don't give up on a young QB until it's absolutely necessary.

I don't think Griffin will ever be an elite qb in the NFL, but with only McCoy and Cousins behind him it's not like the team has a lot of other options going into the offseason.

We will have to see if the Redskins take a quarterback in one of the middle rounds, a bigger guy with a strong arm Gruden can develop in 2015 and get ready to start in 2016 if Griffin flames out again.

I think the alcohol stuff is between him and those who decided to hire him. It'll come up today because the press won't be able to resist it, but he shouldn't have to answer questions about his private life any more than you or I would be expected to when we are hired for a new job. Off/when it becomes a problem his employer will address it. I don't see it as something fans need to know. But that's just me. Ironically I trust a drunk McLovin more than a sober anyone else at Redskins Park

Problem is that Griffin/Snyder stewed this. It's not ALL on Griffin, but his entrance into the league and the things he did early on really focused the public eye on him. Team that with Snyder's 'friendship' added with what we gave up to get him, it's a perfect storm of media bliss.

I am 100% with you. I'm over hearing about how it's going to impact Griffin and I want to start hearing about how we're going to get more wins. I WANT to see Griffin get it done, but for the first time in a while I think we have a guy in place who we can actually trust the moves he makes. We can obviously debate them but I think the long term process is his primary focus and the name on the back of the jersey is irrelevant.

a guy like griffin doesnt just turn into a chump, unless you are a terrible coach and try to force him to be something he is not. a good coach puts him in good position to minimise his flaws, a great coach puts him in spots to maximise his talent.

This GM is exactly what we need, he isnt gonna draft a guy ahead of his spot, but he will draft the guy who will help this team the most LONG TERM.

I am cautiously optimistic, I will be following his moves before making any comments

It will be pretty easy to see if Dan really wants to win games or not.

The NE Patriots have 19 scouts. We have 7. The second fewest in the entire league. Only Cincy, arguably the cheapest organization in football, reportedly has fewer.

Most report that we have pathetic facilities, an absurd locker room and cafeteria for the players. We also have a bad field for our guys to play on 8 games a season.

We also only have 2 trainers on staff. Most clubs I've reviewed have 6-8.

If he wants to win football games, you'll know soon enough.

This is very interesting information. For years we've heard that Snyder is very passionate about wanting to win and will spare no expense to do so. Obviously what you're saying here doesn't back that up at all. It does support however the idea that Snyder is willing to spend the big bucks when it makes him look good or helps him sell jerseys. I would be very interested to see more info on how the Redskins compare to other teams when it comes to spending resources on the behind the scenes less glamorous stuff. If it's as bad as it sounds it sure says a lot.

One of the reasons for the small scouting staff was the organizations mistaken belief that the head coach and assistants could be utilized in the offseason to run down college talent and make draft recommendations.

You can't properly scout a thousand prospects using guys that are doing it part-time and only begin evals in January.

He took Smith no. 1 overall.


I would assume we see a new face at QB in camp this season. A vet guy to come in and compete with Griff and co. It wouldn't shock me to see Griffin traded for a pick/picks though. I WANT Griffin to be the answer here, but either option is on the table.

Mike Nolan was actually the GM at that time. so its hard to tell who actually decided im sure both players were rated highly by mcloven who was hired by Mike Nolan
I think thats one of the reason he wanted full control so he could control that situtions from now on

I'm not sure 7 is an outlandishly small number given what McCloughan said about the ideal size of the of the scouting staff in the presser.

On the ideal size of a scouting staff:

But then in Seattle we had seven and a director, so I don’t think it’s about the amount of numbers. You’ve got to make sure you don’t spread them too thin. It’s just about getting good people. It’s about getting guys that are intelligent and they live for it. Their passion is the NFL, their passion is the Washington Redskins. I like disagreements with them. I like their opinions, especially young guys. I want them to feel like they’re doing their job right.”

Video on redskins.com has Scot talking to Larry Michael ... to paraphrase the beginning part, Scot's agenda for the next couple of weeks are going to the East-West Shrine and Senior Bowl games. Note his comment that he's already identified a few positions on our roster that he'll be looking to upgrade.

Roll up your sleeves, brother Scot. This ain't no party, disco or foolin' around.

the fact he is going to games like east/west is something I like to hear. Getting in the trenches, seeing the guys who aren't in the headlines, picking out some good prospects.

I think this is going to be OK. Don't ask me to give concrete evidence...but I think this guy needs redemption and the way to do that is thru succeeding.
