Item Number 1 on the Agenda for new GM: The Redskins need an Identity

BPA all the way.

My curiosity is whether or not he'll strip the cupboard clean and restock. (Trade players like Griffin, Morris, Garcon, et...for more picks)
Or if he'll, God forbid, keep what good we got, and add to it, while trying to win now, at the same time. (Yes, it damn well can be done)

The key word is 'good' - and I think the key reason we are hiring this guy is because he has a far better eye for who really is part of the long term solution and who isn't. If it were up to fans, all but a handful of players would be untouchable because we over estimate talent level and production and are sentimentally bonded to many players. Realistically, to field a winning team we probably need 3/4ths of this roster replaced. The interesting thing to watch will be how quickly and aggressively he moves that process along?

I wouldn't expect wholesale changes, but who knows. He's been a very firm believer in building through the draft, so it very well could take a while. I just hope we can stay the course, have a plan in place, stick to that plan, and execute it.

You have to assume he's going to go BPA, especially considering that almost every spot on the team needs upgrading and/or depth. What I hope we'll see going forward is that the Redskins are actually correct with the 'best' part. That seems to have been a sticking point with this team in the past.

Couldn't agree more. Best player available strategy falls completely apart if you cannot identify the best players. And admitedly they do all blend together the lower you go in the draft. I still feel we need to target our players. We know what the positions of need are. But can we find the right guys that would best fill that need and still be close to BPA?

For where I sit, the new GM won't really have a handle on the quality of our roster. Considering how bad we were, that may be a moot point. A general house cleaning is in order, so cherry picking who stays and who goes may be a waste of time. It matters not how good our players are compared to other players on our team. Our team needs wholesale changes so I suspect a complete rebuild is on the horizon. At least I think it should be in order for Gruden to have a chance to be successful.

I really don't see us needing wholesale changes. I mean we all know a solid or better player in each tier would elevate those around him. For the offense anyways

I sure hope his first focus is the O-line and outstanding blocking TE's & backs. An offense that can easily take it 80 yards right over the other teams asses. A unit that Jay could run wtf he wants whether it's ground game or siring it out.

Struggling to understand how we view a 7 wins in 2 years roster as not needing wholesale changes guys?

I think we need wholesale changes in certain areas but I think our skill players by and large are VERY good. That said we have no depth and we need both lines and our secondary rebuilt. It's going to be a long process no matter how it's spun.

wellllll.....though I agree that major talent upgrades are needed...I'll play devils advocate

- other losing teams have turned it around pretty quickly

- we have a decent offense...it doesn't need to be burnt to the ground...it needs new tires...not an engine replacement

- 2-3 players on defense can raise it to somewhere around a 15 ranking....just pulling it out of my arse...I know. but it could happen.

- many of the problems are coaching related...IMO. those can be repaired more quickly.

I don't think we need "wholesale" change. I think we need a few key positions upgraded and better coaching.

For example, if we had an OL coach in the class of Bugle or Hanifan or Alex Gibbs working with our current guys I think it is possible that with just the addition of an honest to god NFL caliber RT we might have a pretty good group.

Also for example, if we had a good DC like maybe a Wade Phillips and a true space eating NT to anchor the middle of the line our defense might be a solid middle of the road unit.

There is talent on this roster. Sure, there isn't isn't as much as there is in Seattle or SF or GB or even Dallas but the roster isn't empty of it. The problem is that we are missing it in some key areas and the coaches we have seem incapable of getting the best out of the lower round guys we have been drafting. Consider that Rambo got cut here, picked up by Buffalo and within a few weeks made a solid contribution. Rinehart is starting in SD, one of the better offenses in the league this year. Montgomery ended up starting for Denver the last 8 games of the season. These were guys deemed as "not talented" enough here and yet are doing okay somewhere else. My guess is that has to do with the talent around them and the coaching they are getting.

You all play devil's advocate and I'll just skip that step and go right to being the devil. We have neither a good offense or a good defense. On offense, we have 2 good WRs and we have a good starting RB (possibly a good situational RB but that's arguable). We have one decent TE and only one lineman who is a definite long term starter. That's not a good offense, it's the start to a good offense. On defense, let's not even go there. If we aren't a team in need of a major overhaul, I don't know what is...?

I think most of us (and I include myself) have consistently overestimated this team's talent.

Very possible, Boone. Very possible.

Right now, I think you might underestimating just how bad the positional coaching has been though.

while it's not good I think they are decent and played better the last 3 games but that could have been because we were playing division rivals
Dallas wanted that win way more than we did but is don't think we say they are good enough and get complacent we need to continually upgrade even once we get better it's important to keep continually getting better on both offense and defense

7 wins. In 2 years. Pessimism has nothing to do with it :)

Rambo is where he should have been on the redskins a third stringer but we are so void of depth and quality starters he was a starter

My response was directed toward the 'quick and aggressive' statement. I don't think he comes in and attacks free agency with reckless abandon. I think it'll start with smaller, calculated moves with long term mentality. I do think we need wholesale changes.. I DON'T think we need to expect them to take place prior to April 1.

I'm overstating my case just to make a point - but the primary reason we are bringing in McLovin is because we are talent poor and we have to turn that around. I agree with Bob that coaching is also a factor, but all the coaching in the world can't turn some of our talent into productive players. And 'quick' was probably a bad descriptor. You have to have 53 guys and we can't realistically turn over 3/4's of the roster in one offseason (unless we're just looking to make a statement) and expect to be significantly in a better place. I do expect a house cleaning to happen though. Part of that housecleaning is based on attitude and work ethic. But I think half to 3/4ths of this roster won't be here in 3 years. if I'm wrong, that's even better. But that's what I think we'll see.

No doubt our team has made shit smell like roses lately. Releasing Hazmat alone should give us 2 more wins a year, even before hiring Wade who knows how to coach up a D.

I'm in no way expecting Scot to pick us 7 starters every draft but he's gotta do better than what we have been. Couple dozers in place of Chester & Typo would have to cut our 3rd down misses 1/3 at least.

Shoulda clarified...4 or 5 fresh/contributing starters next yr with solid depth...combined with coaching upgrades would give us 4 more wins at minimum. All my opinion of course

Shhhh...Boone. We just won the off-season SB.

You're so pessimistic.
Sorry to see you're struggling with PE (premature evaluation)

The offseason isn't over yet.

But don't let that stop your crusade.

Try thinking about baseball. It might help. And the Nats are a quality team - so there's that :)

The orioles are better ;)
