In a tie for the 6th Pick with the Jaguars, the tie-breaker goes to.......

Meh.

There are three kinds of teams in the NFL...those with established, elite QB's on their roster...those in the process of determining whether the young potential Franchise QB's they have acquired are the real deal...and those trying their damndest to land either.

The Redskins have wandered in the elite-QB-less desert for 25 years. Some day, some way, they'll fall into another.

Meanwhile, we'll continue year after year to argue over the complementary parts and how they are acquired. Which is good. Because we run a message board and like to argue over that kind of thing every year as if we've never had the conversation before. It keeps the place humming.

So there. :)

 Good to see you back around Om!

Now, where's the Matt Flynn thread? :moon:

I'll be spending some time over the coming weeks getting a read on Flynn....as well as any other potential vets out there who might provide an option for us in 2012. Just haven't really had the chance to watch him play yet---highlight reels are grossly misleading.

If the man can really and truly play, I'd have no problem supporting targeting Flynn in FA...but not stopping there. I'd want to see us draft his eventual replacement as well. This team can't afford to tiptoe around the QB issue any more; they need to attack it.

Want. QB.

Om, I am on board with that. I was thinking of a Tannehill type but many mock drafts have him going at or around the 15th pick. If we brought in Flynn, I'm not sure I would want to sign a 1st rounder unless we traded down and got another 1st round pick out of it.

Here's an article a friend posted for me about Flynn:

While the numbers are just that, it gives an idea of his potential.

Watched a couple of Tanneyhill youtubes yesterday...mostly because I'd never seen him at all. At least Luck and RG3 I've seen a bit of...and am assuming the worst about our ability to land without having to pay a true king's ransom.

We didn't suck bad enough to "earn" a shot at Luck...and RG3 may prove to be tantalyzing just out of reach assuming his workouts between now and April pan out. Meaning...we're probably looking at The Field...and I'm hearing Tanneyhill is in consideration for a good ranking in that category.

As to what his "draft grade" and value might be, I'm thinking the Redskins have gone so long w/o a legit NFL QB that they could justify reaching a bit (but somewhere short of king's ransom territory) and risking the wrath of Mel Kiper and fans and taking a guy higher than they think he should go. If they grab a Flynn...and have graded a Tanneyhill high enough to target as well...DO IT.

Until this franshise finds a legitimate starting NFL quarterback, they will continue to flounder in the wasteland between 5-11 and the occasional 9-7 or even 10-6 flukey success seasons that teams without The Man turn in year after year.

Tired of it. :(

They were talking about that on 980 today at lunch. The consensus amongst the talking heads was we should sign Flynn and then draft a QB in the 2nd or 3rd round as a backup/fallback plan. And then sign an UDFA or 'scrap heap' QB as the third guy.

And everyone agreed neither Beck nor Grossman need return. I honestly don't know enough about Flynn (or the college kids) to have my own opinion on this, but it was an interesting discussion.

See, I would keep Grossman. I think he is a serviceable backup. He knows the system, requires almost no warmup time and is just flat fearless. Let's face it, in this league, your number 2 is really number 1B because he is likely to have to play at some point and if you think it isn't important to have someone you know is a gamer there...well...just ask Bill Polian about it this morning.

I have no issue with going after Flynn and drafting a QB this spring and keeping Grossman. In fact, that would currently be my plan, I think. That would give the team a 22 year old, a 26 year old and 32 year old guy at the QB position. Start either Flynn or your draft pick, whichever is best at the time, and keep Rex on the bench as your in game injury relief guy.

Until and unless they come up with a #3 option proven to be better than Rex, I agree with Neo. He's not a starter, we know that. He is a guy you can keep around to fight for #2.

That said, my morning coffee would taste better knowing we'd found a guy clearly a better option than Sexy Rexy. I wouldn't mind throwing a couple cold ones back with the guy, but I'm getting too old to have my insides clutch up every time he drops back and ... shudder ... his first option isn't there.

I don't think Flynn will sign anywhere he isn't given the starting job, which may eliminate some teams. He is going to want to know that he will be the day one starter, barring injury, or some bizarre dropoff in performance in preseason and TC.

Neo, I think I like your suggestion. Draft the QB with the most upside potential in the 2nd or 3rd, keep Rex around as a backup for a year, and sign Flynn, if his contract demands aren't outrageous.

I could see that. I wouldn't have a huge problem keeping Rex around as a backup. On the other hand, I wouldn't be too shattered if he wasn't re-signed. :)

no...no....no! Rex...must.....go.

his whole game is flawed.....physically and mentally.

This is my philosophy as well, even though it's not a popular one - a team like the Redskins should be far more concerned with getting the "right player", than getting the "right value" for the pick.

Who cares if the player wasn't rated as high as we pick him ? If we desperately need him, and there's a reasonable risk of not getting him (or a reasonable fascimile of the player) in a later pick, then GO FOR IT.

I mean, we don't have a big problem with over-paying contracts on good players once in a while, or trading an extra pick for a really good player once in a while, then why not slightly "over-pay" on pick's value, if it can potentially save our franchise ?

When we end up hoisting that Super Bowl trophy within the next couple years, no-body is going to complain that we picked a player too high in the draft.

I am certain that we could find even a better #2 QB than the Turnover Machine we have at #1 now.

You guys better pace yourself. It's ****ing January.

If you really believe this, you have more faith than I do. Remember, we couldn't even find anyone better for the #1 spot the last two seasons. Forget the #2 spot.

Pace? What is this "pace" you speak of?

Depends what kind of faith we're talking about. Faith that there's better options out there - yes.
Faith that our FO is smart enough to find them - no.

It's not that we couldn't find anyone, or one could not be found - it's that our FO was incapable of identifying those options.
Do you really believe that Grossman & Beck were the best available options last offseason ? Heck, a guy we cut off our own roster, Kellen Clemens, would have out-performed the 2 clowns that we ordained as our QB answer in 2011.
And believe it or not, and like it or not, Donovan McNabb, who we also cut loose in favor of those 2 guys, ALSO out-performed them in Minnesota in 2011, on a worse team. Shoot, he even played better for us in 2010, than Wrecks/Beck did in 2011. Wouldn't you trade anything for McNabb's balls into the dirt, than Rex's balls to the opposition team ?
At least McNabb could "throw it away" - intended or not.
And of course, Shan-Allen also cut loose Campbell, in favor of McNabb - Campbell, who out-performed all 3 of those guys mentioned above (before AND after we traded him) .
That's THREE QB Fail Choices by this FO, in just TWO years.

Matt Cassel and Kevin Kolb were highly thought of backup quarterbacks who played well on championship caliber teams and then were dealt for high picks.

How have they done to date? :)

Kolb seems to be taking a back seat to Skelton and Cassel may not be back in KC if the team signs Orton going forward.

Before the Redskins leap for a guy that has had TWO good games in the 3 plus years he has been in the NFL, some due diligence needs to be conducted.
