If you have a young child or use a smartphone...

Yup. Pictures store GPS location data in it if whatever is taking the picture has that capability. It also stores other data.

There are tools that will remove the metadata from the picture if you want to run them through the tool before posting them.

This is one of those times when I can't help but feel that this information being publicly broadcast and spread via social media, is actually a bigger threat than not mentioning it. Think about how many evildoers had no idea this existed before it was made public, and knowing this just gave them an extra weapon in their arsenal. Stupid to broadcast in my opinion.

Cell phone photos the next big threat to your personal security.....

Edit: I should know better, and looked before I posted the same subject. Thanks for the merge.

Pretty scary stuff none the less, and I will be talking to my daughter when she gets home.

While I understand your point, I'd have to say more good folks will be alerted to the danger then the other way around.

You'd be surprised how well those people adapt to technology and other things.

They say you're not supposed to put those family stickers on your car, it tells them if you have little kids, how many, what gender, etc.

When I was in school they told our parents not to let us have back packs with names embroidered on the back, it gave attackers the ability to seem friendly and non-threatening by already knowing the name.

Sick ****ing people in this world.

Well, the video is gone, and searching over and over again, everything goes back to the broken link. I'll fix it if I find it.

This seems like common sense to me. I never have the GPS activated on my phone unless I'm driving. (I would also never display the makeup of my family on the back of my car.) Maybe I'm just paranoid but the world doesnt need to know these things.

The thing a lot of people don't realize is that the internet has enabled these people to get together and spread this kind of info, to share this sort of stuff. There is a whole 'underworld' on the internet and many things go on there, some of it is child pornography and molestation.

So while it may take a person with some sophisticated computer knowledge to know about this and be able to use the information, it only takes one to make a quick and dirty tool that does it. It takes the average person with access to the right sites to spread it, download it, and use it.

Pictures are bad, but facebook and twitter aren't any better. Every tweet you send, for example, contains your geographic location (if the device sending it has that information.) And you can freely obtain access to the twitter data.

I've done data collection and analysis on tweets. I was able to figure out what the average time most twitter users went to bed and woke up across all the different time zones based on geolocation information in the tweets, time stamps, and statistics on activity on twitter. While that may sound fancy, trust me it's not. That's introductory stuff, which is why I know it (those fields weren't the ones i heavily studied.) Anyone can figure out how to do it in an hour or two if they wanted to.
