your argument makes sense...no denying that. here's a different perspective: what if Gruden et al feel his second season is a legit run for the SB year? what if they feel all the pieces are in place...including Rak? Lot of negotiating as to be done....but if you honestly think the SB fruit is ready to be plucked from the championship tree...you just might go for it...and worry about the money after you have won it all. not saying this is likely...just saying I find it plausible.

I'm leaning more and more towards this point of view - perhaps Gruden views the offense with a healthy Griffin good enough to win it all. This seems feasible, as Jay is an offensive guy, and the Skins are one year removed from a top five offense. All they have done is get bigger on the OL and added speed and talent to the WR corps (not to mention a healthy RGIII).
If they don't feel like they'll be competitive this year, and Rak isn't in their long term plans, I just can't find the sense in franchising him. Unless it's truly an audition for next season. That doesn't make sense either, however, as Haslett is head over heels for the guy. Perhaps this is a one season audition for Haz also, and they gave him Rak because he lobbied? I dunno... Still doesn't pass the smell test to me.

kinda how I look at it also. they wouldn't have franchised him unless he figured longer term. the philosophy is clearly to hold players longer term to create a stable nucleus. it can come undone if Rak's agent demands too much...but...right now...I think they're planning for a SB run next season (2015) or fol...and that will be harder if Rak goes....IMO.
let's assume Rak does well this season and totals 10+ sacks given the improved talent and Hazlett unleashed. we let him go...he's gonna be in high demand. IMO...Dallas or Philly make a play for him. he ant that bad that we could just shrug this off!
I'm completely comfortable with letting Orakpo play out the 2014 season and become a FA next year.
If he's the same guy we've seen throughout his career--brilliant in flashes but never quite living up to his perceived ceiling--he either gets some other team to pay him what he thinks he's worth, or he tests the market, finds out the Skins haven't been jerking him around, and he ends up coming back here at a fair market price.
If he turns in a monster year in 2014, and some other team makes him an offer he can't refuse, we have the option of trying to match it, appealing to his competitive side if the team progresses in 2014 like we all hope it does, or letting him walk and getting on with life without him. That's where Mr. Murphy might come in.
The Rak we've seen so far is not indispensable to building a contender. If he becomes that, we'll have the home field advantage trying to sign him to a fair-market contract that he'll have earned.
Of course, there could be other factors that become involved that we only learn about down the road. But for now, sitting here in May, I'm not feeling like there's any pressure to fish or cut bait before this season plays out.

We may not have the option to match. That's entirely up to Rak, whether he let's them match or not. Chances are Bruce will give him their best offer and say good luck.

That's why I said we could try to match it by appealling to his competitive side. Yes he would have the option to choose to take a stupid money offer elsewhere. But if we really think he's worth that kind of money, we can try to keep him anyway.
If he bailed anyway, despite the Skins matching an offer from another team, we'd have some insight into how he feels about being a Redskin at a time when there is clearly something building here.
