Health & Physical Fitness/Training Thread

Took the week off from training, because, well sometimes a person just needs it! Itching to get back into the gym tomorrow though :D

Well, I'm sure the shovelling was wonderful excercise but my back is sore as hell today. Lifting with the knees and engaging the core apparently didn't help.

So I'm taking the day off. Bleh.

Lost three lbs this week, feeling good. No trip to Y yesterday or today, so I will make the effort to go tomorrow and Sunday instead. I told a friend of mine I felt like I plateaued, and she suggested we run our company 5k together for the Summer meeting in July. So I will start training for that shortly. Should be awfu... er, fun.

Surprisingly, the day after...mine is not.

Good job!

Don't be scared about the 5k. 5k's are full of kids, families, etc. who aren't there to beat an Olympic time, but moreso to do something active outside with friends and family. The serious runners are few and far between in those short distance races. My last 5k experience was an "Ugly Christmas Sweater" Run where I was tasked with keeping an eye on my 6 y/o niece to make sure her and her little friends stayed on the course while her parents helped officiate the race. My experience vacillated between sprinting to keep up with 4 first graders on some parts of the course and standing still watching them make snow angels on other parts of the course: real serious stuff.

:) My friend is a real fitness buff, she kinda reminds me of you in some ways, except that she works in HR and likes to crush people's dreams.

:)

She says she won't do it unless we can get it under half an hour, so we are going to need to move along. I've been on the elliptical and have that up to 45 minutes now, but I tried a jog on the treadmill last week and it doesn't translate. I was wheezing after 5 minutes. I've got to get things in gear or she may have me fired...

Yeah, she's crazy. In a good way. Sort of. Once the weather gets to not be sucking all the time, I plan on running outdoors quite a bit. My middle daughter is on the Cross Country team and wants to train some this Spring, so I will join her I think.

There was a time when I could run a 10k in 32 minutes. No lie. Man, that was a long, long time ago :)

You had/have some real talent Boone- 6 miles at 5 minutes per is no joke. You must have one hell of a cv system.

I ran my first 5K in 28:45, and was pumped. My goal was under thirty, lol.

Your friend sounds like a hardass. LOL! I'm sure you'll be fine for getting under 30 if you train :) There was a time, way back in HS track, where I could run extremely fast mile and 2-mile races...but not these days. I'd be happy with a sub-25 min. 5K. I don't even know what my last 5k time was, but between the kids' snow angels and YMCA playground detour, I doubt my time in that Christmas race was under 30 min.

I started training for a new event in this years Tournaments. Straight sword sparring. Holy crap was it fun last night!!! Although I am pretty banged up today, I did win both bouts I fought.

Great thread.

Boone- 32 minutes for a 10k is impressive. Ran a 17:56 pb 5k last summer, after a 3:08 marathon (London) in 2012. Tended to stick to half marathons in my training, but really felt like some 10's would have benefitted my leg speed hugely and got me closer to 3 hours. Best 10 is around 40 minutes, but not done one for a long time, would like to think I could have hit around 38 a couple of years back!

Was hoping to do a spring marathon (Edinburgh, ideally), but with moving house and having a 16 m/o who's not the biggest lover of sleeping through the night, the level of training involved would have been too much. Autumn has been pencilled in.

Back in the gym at the moment, bit of strength and conditioning with some spin and 'burnout' classes mixed in. Know I've lost some speed but nothing a few 400-1000m sprint drills in the spring won't cure :disgust:

I'm two weeks into T25 and so far it's doable. I'm managing to do the 25 minute workout in the morning and then a second workout (either a run or TKD class) later in the day and none of my limbs have fallen off yet. Also, sparring class on Saturdays have gotten easier.

Unfortunately, in addition to shoveling out my own driveway a few weeks ago, I also had to shovel out my parents' this past week and my back is now completely shot. Took yesterday off and today I'm going to risk a slow three mile run. Hopefully tomorrow I'll be back up to my two workouts a day. Getting old really does suck sometimes.

I've decided my fitness goal for 2014 is to do ten pull ups. I can't do any right now, sadly. Lofty goal, we'll see what happens!!

The major fitness test for crossfit is "Fran," which involves sets of thrusters and pull ups... right now I'm a DNF, lol.

Really liking crossfit, so far! After two weeks, I feel like I'm making good progress as well. Still not lifting as much as prescribed, but that will come. Getting the movements down first. You can really tell you've gotten a full body workout after every session, which is awesome.

A few of my girlfriends and I just registered for the 2014 "SCW Mania" Fitness Professional Convention in San Francisco at the end of March. SCW Fitness Education : MANIA® Fitness Conventions I've never been to one of these before, but I've heard they're awesome. One of the days I plan on getting certified as a spin instructor, because, well, why the heck not?

Also just got the "ok" from the doc to resume playing tennis. HELL YES! I've hardly played since moving back to California last year, so I can't wait to get back into it and hopefully play in a couple USTA leagues this summer and fall. Can't wait!

Glad to hear you stuck it out through the first 2 weeks (e.g. the most difficult sessions when starting CrossFit - or any new workout program for that matter). Also glad to hear you like it! I suspect you're going to like it more each time you go; it really is a fun and supportive community :) And like you said, be patient with the heavy weights; your strength will come with reps and time. The main thing is making sure you have a very strong foundation of correct form.

It's nice to finally be able to wake up the next day and not be in pain, lol.

Well, I may have broken through the plateau I was worried about. I adjusted my eating (cut way down on any snacking after dinner - the wife and I like to enjoy wine and cheese a few times a week while we watch TV, so I only did that once this week) and increased my elliptical workouts to 45 minutes. And I lost 5 lbs in Feb, so am feeling better. I had negligible weight loss in Dec, nothing in Jan, so this feels good again. 10-15 to go!

Well I'm just recovering from a nasty nasty stomach bug from last week. The good news is I lost 5 pounds in 24 hours. The bad news is, well, it was not a fun way to lose weight, and I've only had obe workout since Wednesday (the kids having two MORE snow days this week isn't helping).

Today I'm hoping for a three mile run and then a T25. Even if I just sneak one of those in I'll be happy.

Mike, when you start to panic, try using your gait to help regulate your breathing. Step step breathe, step step breathe. If that doesn't do it, decrease your stride for a little while, so that you slow down without slowing down your breathing. That usually helps me get under control when I get that feeling Im getting overwhelmed.
