Health & Physical Fitness/Training Thread

No word yet. I passed the time today doing Cardio X and then Ab Ripper X back-to-back. I got through it, but I have to say **** the mother****ing Fifer ****ing Scissors. I can NOT get through 25 of those. The entire rest of the session I can do, but not that one damn set. Whoever invented that needs to die a slow painful death.

Im down 31.2 lbs in 16 days now and feel REALLY good.

Dude! Did you just say you lost 31.2 lbs in 16 days??!!!. Is that safe?

I need to loose at least 30 but I see no way I could pull it off that quick.

BMI charts are total garbage. There has to be a more accurate measure. According to BMI, I should weigh 145 lbs. I was 156 when I got out of basic, and it was the best shape I was ever in. I looked phenomenal physically. If I was 11 lbs less than that, I'd look like I was sick. So never go by a BMI chart (which Clinton Portis said told him he was morbidly obese), because it doesn't factor a lot of stuff, and it's grossly inaccurate. Build matters. I'm only 5'7", but I'm built large. I have a wide neck, chest and shoulders, and even where my body fat was at its lowest, I was nowhere close to "skinny." But my brother is 5'11", and with his build, if he was my current weight (189), he'd look fat and out of shape, because he's built scrawny.

I think build and age should be more of a determining factor than height and body fat percentage. I've seen women who look way larger than me, who weighed 40lbs less than I do, so muscle mass makes a difference too.

Oh well, didn't get the invite. I knew the standard prep time was six months but I was hoping by sheer force of awesomeness I would convince them to let me test early. Apparently I wasn't quite as awesome as I thought. :)

So now it's June. At least I have time to get in better shape. I have to admit I'm not sure I could have gotten into game shape by March.

Sorry Henry, I was pulling for you.

(though I do feel that listening to Pearl Jam and/or Nirvana could have perhaps increased your awesome quotient enough to get the invite.)

(too soon?)

If I had to listen to Nirvana or Pearl Jam to get it, I don't want it. :p

I'm sorry you did don't get the invite Henry. I know you are disappointed but I also know that its just a little longer in the journey and that likely your instructors have yours and the Art's best interests at heart. You will knock it out of the park when your turn comes around next time!

Did an hour and a half on my bike yesterday (too damn cold out to ride outside, but have a bike stand set up in my sunroom). I have a fridge full of good beer taunting me but am going to continue to lay off for awhile as I just don't need the calories. Goal weight is 175 (that's fighting weight). It blows my mind that in HS, when in full cross country/track mode I thought 150 was too heavy.

And congrats Mike - that is impressive. Better find something physical to do long-term that you can keep up - because you won't be able to sustain the weight by eating the way you have. I'm going to have to do the same thing once I get where I want to be. I wish science would come up with a way to safely keep your metabolism what it was when you were younger - that's the killer is your energy-burning capabilities just drop off dramatically as you get older...

If you get your activity level up now, when the weight comes back it won't come back as fat. (Well at least not all of it)

40 pounds. Thats awesome.

Since I have an extra three months to train for my test I went ahead and ordered T25. I'm planning on adding it to my existing excercise schedule ... basically doing two-a-days five days a week plus an hour of sparring on Saturdays.

If this doesn't get me ready (and doesn't kill me) nothing will.

And then in June I'M having an 800 calorie beer, and it will be glorious.

Just want to throw it out there that one of the biggest things we can do to help maintain weight loss/body composition is to engage in regular resistance training.

Obviously as we age our metabolism slows and the slow metabolism is compounded by the fact that we lose a small percentage of our muscle mass each decade (this is particularly true for females...hooray). By engaging in regular resistance training we maintain or even build our muscle mass which then increases our basal metabolic rate (the amount of calories we burn at rest). More muscle = faster metabolism.

Of course eating a relatively healthy diet is important too, but it gets more difficult to maintain a certain weight as the years go on and metabolism slows.

By the way, Mike, congrats on your awesome weight loss! That is an incredible accomplishment! :)

Started crossfit last night... Pretty sure I already have rhabdo.

Started the T25 program yesterday. So far it's pretty easy for me, though I'm doing another workout later in the day and the combo is making me pretty sore. Did Speed 1.0 this morning and in about 10 minutes I'm off to run a 3 miler. Hopefully I won't collapse. :)

I am curious about T25, Henry. Let me know what you think of it. I have Insanity, which I did religiously until my shoulder gave out one day. I need to get back to it but I like the idea of the 25 minute work out. I'm looking at P90X3 for the same reason.

I did some serious research before picking T25 over Insanity and ultimately picked T25 because it would enable me to continue my other workouts while I did it, and if I felt it was too light I could double it up. The T25 vs. Insanity comparisons I read said they were basically the same stuff, just T25 was shorter and if you wanted to stretch it was not included in the '25 minutes' (though there is a 3-4 minute stretch-session following each workout if you have time.) Pretty much everyone who did Insanity first said T25 was cake because it was just shorter.

Personally (I'm three days in) I find the cardio fairly light, the lower body/core-work a bit of a challenge (but doable) and the upper body stuff just brutal. Honestly though, that's just me. I'd been ramping up cardio a lot lately and other than push-ups here and there don't work my upper body much at all. Not sure that helps you though. :)

Totally helps, Henry. Thanks!

Two hours on the bike trainer today...felt good. Rewarding myself with the first beer I've had in 3 or 4 weeks.

Thought the amount of snow shoveling I did today would be too much. I'm glad I underestimated my conditioning. I did far better than I thought I would...was out there for 5 hours but took break in between so I would say I did a good 3 of actual shoveling.

Saturday, I am looking forward to the hike up river through the 18 or so inches of snow that will be untouched. Gonna get some images too. I love snow!
